This might be one of your best reactions ever for TNG. So many one liners "forcefield suck it". "Look at his evil face". "Oh sh sh shoot" 🤣 I need to join your patreon. I feel sort of guilty about getting this level of entertainment for free.
Marina Sirtis said she was also excited that she got to play the bad guy for once and never did her own stunts. She wanted to do her own stunts in this episode. That was her falling on her back when they were taken over by the aliens. She hurt her back and never again did her own stunts. I saw her at Star Trek convention in Miami when she said this.
She also mentions this in Journeys End The Saga of TNG that aired with the final episode. "it could have been worf in troi's costume and you wouldn't have noticed the difference." "I learned my lesson"
Oh wow! The nameless female security officer that was stunned in 10-Forward was played by Patricia Tallman! She was an actress and stuntwoman on Trek for 8 years, beginning with this episode. She had a significant speaking role as a villain in a future TNG episode. She is also well known as the telepath Lyta Alexander in "Babylon 5". In 1989 she was a stunt double in the Wes Craven movie "Shocker" with Mitch Pileggi (known for "The X-Files", "Stargate: SG-1", and "Stargate: Atlantis") and Brent Spiner.
Oh yeah, SF Debris mentioned her when she was playing a bridge crew member on DS9 in "The Way Of The Warrior". Saying: "She mainly works as a stunt person for Star Trek, so I guess the console she is working at will soon explode..."
Always surprised when I see her even though I know she’s gonna show up both as background actor and stunt double (at about 5:13 for those who wanna look for her - the red headed security officer)
The ending is always interesting based on the idea that the O'Brien and troi was seeing everything happen would that be the same for data or was he just shut down
For me personally this was a very good and exciting episode. I just love it when different crew members who usually don't get much screen time together are in the focus. I think Marina Sirtis' performance here was great and I bet Brent Spiner had fun playing evil and showing emotions again. 😁Thanks Jen, I enjoyed this one alot❤
Troi: "It was as if my own consciousness were pushed to the side. I was watching everything happen, hearing my own voice, but not being able to control any of it." Picard: "I wouldn't know anything about that."
Well he doesn't always get beaten but he does take his lumps as chief security officer at times. Even though Worf isn't the only security officer to have bad days across the Star Trek franchise I do believe he's had the most compared to other security officers.
So many episodes of this show involve crew members being tortured or being manipulated in some way by outside entities. Imagine how traumatic that would be afterwards. "I did terrible things... and even though I know it wasn't my fault and I wasn't really doing those things myself, I will carry these memories the rest of my life."
Unfortunately, it was episodic television. At the time, they had to fight for an episode like Family that showed the repercussions of Picard's abduction by the Borg. The crew go through things that would have them in therapy for the rest of their lives or unable to continue their careers in Starfleet under normal circumstances.
[of his arm, casually] "Pretty sure that's broken" - Riker being as iconic as an...iconic...icon :). Fun to see Marina Sirtis and Colm Meaney get to flex a few different acting muscles in this one (Brent Spiner gets to do it pretty regularly of course and _always_ smashes it).
Sirtis, Spiner, and Meaney came up with nicknames for their alternate identities: Slugger, Buzz, and Slash. This is not one of my favorite episodes, but it was fun watching you watch it.
They were really fond of nicknames. At my first Star Trek convention, Sirtis and Frakes were there, and she said they'd nicknamed Denise Crosby, who played Tasha Yar, Pookie (no idea why), so they were always calling her Pookie Yar. To this day, that is what I call her character in my head instead of Tasha. X)
You mentioned this as a comfort show. Back in the day, I had a schedule that allowed me to catch a late reply of TNG after work. I knew exactly how much delay I had to allow in pausing recording on my VCR to cut commercials on the fly. By doing that, I managed to make several tapes . Now here's the kicker. I used high quality tapes, and recorded the episodes at maximum compression. Now, these tapes were capable of containing 8 hours of video at max compression, but by being able to actively omit the commercials, I would manage to get 12 episodes on a tape. There was always a little room left, which worked out well if I was running late. Occasionally that would happen and the commercials would be recorded, but most of the time I wasn't that late. Anyway, it was great to be able to put on 12 hrs of Next Gen and just have it run all day....95% commercial free. Can't even do that with DVD's today.
"Can't even do that with DVD's today." But why would I? I can watch a 1080p, 100% commercial free mkv file of an entire season off my hard drive, safely backed up to Blu-Ray.
Well, technically you could play your DVD on your TV and record it onto a VHS tape today via a VCR also hooked up to your TV, and so get 12 hours of commercial free episodes onto one VHS tape (assuming you still own a DVD player and a VCR these days). X)
@xzonia1 Yeah, but this was over 30 years ago. Besides, occasionally getting some of the Taco Bell commercials back then was cool. They weren't stupid like now.
The Security lady is Pat Tallman, stunt woman and recurring actor on Star Trek. Acting credits include Barbara in the 90s Night of the Living Dead opposite the late great Tony Todd (RIP) and also as Lyta Alexander in the other 90s SciFi series Babylon 5.
One of the best old time action sequences for the TNG crew including that old time hit on the back of the neck to Picard by Troi. I only wish TNG had more of episodes like this.
3:24 I agree, it always bothers me that Data as a non-organic, synthetic with a positronic brain could be affected exactly the same way that Troi and O’Brien were. While Data has free will and self determination, his behaviour and choices operate based on complex and advanced programming. It shouldn’t be possible to possess and control Data in the exact same manner as the others. However, at least it allows Brent Spiner a way of stretching his acting muscles by playing “Data” with more emotional range than he normally gets to portray (even more so than Lore’s characterization)
Baby O'Brien is named Molly, you see her a little bit older in some episodes of DS9. I wonder it the entities did not possess Riker because he had a broken arm and at that stage they did not know that they could heal broken bones so easily and quickly.
yes. Marina Sirtis (Troi) said this was the most fun episode she filmed. She had an absolute blast bossing and pushing Picard around. (she also complained about the stunt in the beginning)
It always amazes me when the bad guys in TNG manage to take over Data like it was nothing. Amazing these prisoners had positronic matrix experience, and were able to effect it without bodily form.
Fun fact: Marina Sirtis broke her tailbone in this episode. Apparently when throwing herself to the ground on the alien planet, she gave it a little too much gusto...
Ouch. A friend of mine broke her tailbone and the doc wouldn’t do an X ray as she might want to have kids later. So for 20 years that I knew her, she had problems with it
This episode was a lot of fun for me. Probably top half of the series episodes for me. Good little twists and performances and a good resolution to it.
Hi, Just to let you know that there won't be any Star Trek TNG on the 22nd as it's Jen's family Christmas get together, it will resume on the 29th as usual.
I haven't rewatched this episode in years. Forgot about the shootout in 10 Forward entirely. Lol. It was a lot of fun seeing it again with you, not entirely knowing myself what was going to happen. X)

I can remember being SO confused, and struggling to piece together what I'd missed. (And then the next episode I caught, 5x18, confused me even more!)
Given your understanding and appreciation of Star Trek, especially when it has aged badly sometimes-social issues, special effects, etc-make me really want to see you react to Babylon 5, Jen. You wouldn't give it flack for its effects, but appreciate what they were trying to do. ♥
Well this was a Wild Episode!😅Next to Data's "Possessed-Performance"🤔it was Troi tapping into Her own Dark Side that really Impressed Me the most!👍If Marina Sirtis can't get enough Respect for Her Character, I Hope (at least) that this Episode earned Her some More Respect as an Actress...🙏
Worf is such a great warrior that the writers always show him being attacked and thrown around like a ragdoll to prove how dangerous the enemies are. O'Brien threw him over the console and captain's chair this episode, he's been beaten up by old men, even Troi broke his wrist and threw him into a wall once. Nobody does that to Data...
However, as reward for being so good at being messed with so much, I'm pretty sure Michael Dorn holds the record for appearing in the most Star Trek episodes in the franchise history. It may not always be proud, but at least he got the paychecks for it :)
I was really hoping Ensign Ro was going to steal a shuttlecraft and plot an encircling trajectory of the Enterprise so she could "Nuke 10 Forward from orbit, just to be sure."
Marina Sirtis broke her tail bone in when the four of them were knocked down. Then she saw the episode and was annoyed because a stunt person could have done that one.
I think something that is often overlooked is the acting skills of the cast. I always thought this was a good episode, and I appreciate your reaction to it immensely number one 🖖😊🇨🇦

There is an excellent episode of Deep Space Nine with a very similar theme to this episode called "The Assignment" (Season 5, episode 5). It heavily involves Miles and Keiko. I don't want to give you any spoilers, but I think you'll enjoy that one if you loved this one!
What I love most about this episode is they're all 'Your rationality blinds you to the mysteries Beyond the Veil...' and they're like 'No, we know ghosts are real, *but your story doesn't add up*' I think the prisoners weren't sent down without bodies, they died and became ghosts. This won't be the first plasma storm ghost.
Here's what I found unique about this episode: Picard trusted his instincts believing that the entities controlling Data, Troi, & O'Brien were NOT long-lost Starfleet Officers, but alien hostiles with hidden agendas.
O'Brien (possessed) now joins then list of those involved in The Worf Effect 🤣 Oh TNG writers, why do you guys hate Worf?😆 Another episode where Ms Sirtis uses her "Demona voice" lol
I always got the sense that the writers and producers like Marina Sirtis more than writing for Troi that's why they have her possessed more often than everyone else, so she can play another character to show her range.
Actress Patricia Tallman was one of the security officers on this episode. She has played several extra roles on Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager. She has acted as a stunt double for Gates McFadden and Michelle Forbes
I actually really like this episode. I don't love it but I like it a lot. The "possessed" regular characters were really menacing and the performances were convincing.
if you like Colm Meaney, try to check out The Committments, from 1991, if you haven't already seen it. Set in Dublin, it's a fun movie, about a young band, with some great songs, and Meaney, and the rest of the cast, being their Irish best.
As the great Mr. Plinkett pointed out, Them just walking down the hall from 10 forward to the Cargo bay in this episode is more intense and has you more engaged then all the over the top CGI space battles and fights you see in all the new Trek shows combined.
Great reaction it’s a great episode. Yeah, the Klingons and the Romulins can’t stand android robots or even AI they don’t trust them because they’re 10 times stronger than most humanoids thanks for the fun till next time

One of my faves from this season particularly because Marina Sirtis is deliciously good as a villainous Troi coin flip.

Great reaction! One of many i love this season.
I actually really like this episode. I don't love it but I like it a lot. The "possessed" regular characters were really menacing and the performances were convincing.
O’Brien being possessed and forced to harass his family; that poor man has suffered enough… time for a transfer to a nice quiet backwater outpost.
if you like Colm Meaney, try to check out The Committments, from 1991, if you haven't already seen it. Set in Dublin, it's a fun movie, about a young band, with some great songs, and Meaney, and the rest of the cast, being their Irish best.
I now want a T-shirt that says "Force Field! Suck It!"
When Patricia Tallman shows up in Star Trek, she has a 99% chance of dying.
Mr. Worf bring out the Ghostbuster Proton Packs and Ghost Traps.
As the great Mr. Plinkett pointed out, Them just walking down the hall from 10 forward to the Cargo bay in this episode is more intense and has you more engaged then all the over the top CGI space battles and fights you see in all the new Trek shows combined.
Great reaction it’s a great episode. Yeah, the Klingons and the Romulins can’t stand android robots or even AI they don’t trust them because they’re 10 times stronger than most humanoids thanks for the fun till next time
I can’t wait to see you in Ops Gold someday…
Marina Sirtis rarely got a chance to do some proper acting, this is one of the few and she _really_ nailed it.
