  • "When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (ACTS 2:1-4)
    The hymns in the Orthodox Christian Church are written to express theologically in depth to understand and connect with God in prayer. Through the hymns one can see the richness of poetic and melodic composition written by pronounced hymnographers within the 6th century which one of them is Kosmas the Melodist. He has offered an enormous collection of hymns through the church liturgical calendar basically more identified with canons. The poetic art of work written by Kosmas the Melodist is theologically in depth based on the Holy Scriptures and the Fathers of the Church.

    Θείῳ καλυφθεὶς ὁ βραδύγλωσσος γνόφῳ.
    Ἐρρητόρευσε τὸν θεόγραφον νόμον·

    Ὁρᾷ τὸν ὄντα, καὶ μυεῖται Πνεύματος

    The slow of tongue, covered in divine darkness,
    Proclaimed the law written by God;
    For shaking the dust from his mind’s eye,

    Ode 3 Grave Mode
    O my Christ, You said to Your disciples, ʺHere in the city of Jerusalem tarry* until you are clothed with power from on high;* and I will send another Comforter like me.* This will be the Spirit of my Father and of me; in Him your faith will be confirmed.ʺ

    That which for the fear of You was conceived, O Lord,* in the belly of the prophets, and was brought forth on the earth,* the Spirit of salvation,* now in the Apostles is creating clean hearts,* and in the believers is renewed upright.* For, as it is written, Your commandments are light and peace.
    Λυτήριον κάθαρσιν ἀμπλακημάτων,
    Πυρίπνοον δέξασθε Πνεύματος δρόσον,
    Ὦ τέκνα φωτόμορφα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας·

    Ode 6 Grave Mode
    Nauseous from the tempest of life's worries, I have been cast out* by sins sailing with me, and I am sinking,* having been thrown to the beast that devours souls.* O my Christ, to You I cry like Jonah,* Raise me from the deadly deep, I pray, O Lord my God.
    Ἱλασμὸς ἡμῖν Χριστὲ καὶ σωτηρία,
    Ὁ Δεσπότης ἔλαμψας ἐκ τῆς Παρθένου,
    Ἵν, ὡς Προφήτην θηρὸς ἐκ θαλαττίου,
    Στέρνων Ἰωνᾶν, τῆς φθορᾶς διαρπάσῃς,

    Ode 7 Grave Mode
    When the devout young men in Babylon were put in the fiery furnace,* they changed the fire into refreshing dew* by sending up a prayer of praise and crying,* ʺBlessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers.ʺ

    Σέβειν τὸ χρυσότευκτον ἄψυχον βρέτας.

    Ἄφλεκτος πυρὶ ἐν Σινᾷ προσομιλοῦσα, βάτος Θεὸν ἐγνώρισε, τῷ βραδυγλώσσῳ καὶ δυσήχῳ Μωσεῖ καὶ Παῖδας ζῆλος Θεοῦ, τρεῖς ἀναλώτους τῷ πυρὶ ὑμνῳδοὺς ἔδειξε· Πάντα τὰ ἔργα τὸν Κύριον ὑμνεῖτε, καὶ ὑπερυψοῦτε εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας.
    Ode 8 Grave Mode
    Sinai's bush revealed God to Moses, the dysphonic stammerer who was hard to hear,* when it was burning yet remained unconsumed.*And zeal for God showed the three Lads in the furnace to be hymnodists unscathed by fire.* O all you works of the Lord, extol the Lord,*and supremely exalt Him unto all the ages.
    Λύει τὰ δεσμὰ καὶ δροσίζει τὴν φλόγα,
    Ὁ τρισσοφεγγὴς τῆς θεαρχίας τύπος
    Ὑμνοῦσι Παῖδες, εὐλογεῖ δὲ τὸν μόνον,
    Σωτῆρα καὶ παντουργόν, ὡς εὐεργέτην,
    Ἡ δημιουργηθεῖσα σύμπασα κτίσις
    The triple radiant type of Godhead’s source
    Looses the bonds and turns the flame to dew;
    Youths give praise; while all created nature
    Blesses the only Saviour and Creator
    Of all as Benefactor.

    Μή τής φθοράς διαπείρα κυοφορήσασα, καί παντεχνήμονι Λόγω σάρκα δανείσασα, Μήτερ απείρανδρε, Παρθένε Θεοτόκε, δοχείον τού αστέκτου, χωρίον τού απείρου πλαστουργού σου, σε μεγαλύνομεν.
    Ode 9 Grave Mode
    Without sustaining corruption you still conceived a child,* and lent your flesh to the Word and general Artificer.* Mother who knew no man, O Virgin Theotokos,* receptacle and space of your uncontained and infinite Creator, you do we magnify.

    As we can see through the study of canons of Pentecost it takes us through a journey from the Old Testament and the New Testament and basically the poetic art written by St Kosmas the melodist he continues the tradition of the New Testament in rhythmic prose. There is a depth of theological and doctrinal teachings of Christ identified within the hymns. St Kosmas refers in all the nine odes to its scriptural model of the Holy Spirit in Pentecost allegorically; he gives us a profound understanding of our Lord with prayer. Analysing the Hermoi one can see the interlink and interconnection of the Old Testament with the New Testament, how perfectly St Kosmas used scriptural sources to adapt his hymns according to the biblical canticles. He is very well inspired very much by the Holy Spirit presenting this prayer and also masterpiece of art in hymnology.

    Beautiful katavasia! Does anyone know why it switches between Grave Mode and Mode 4? I've never seen a canon do that

      They are the Heirmoi of two different canons, the first canon is in Grave Mode and the second is in Fourth Mode.
