My mum emigrated here in 1969 as a £10 POM and had me here, so I'm technically first generation Aussie. When she passed away in July this year I was asked whether I'd move back to England and my immediate was response was no way. I'm true blue Aussie and I don't think I would like the weather in the UK.

Try Adelaide! We have heat but generally little to no humidity. Also wine! Come in March and check out the Adelaide Fringe. You will be blown away!

Great interview Ross! Hannah and her partner sound like they will fit in just fine , she didn't complain about anything so she's way ahead of some of us Aussies who have been known to whine about something every now and then . My excuse is I'm a grumpy old bugger so it's my job , so it's nice to see a happy POM taking advantage of what we have to offer and we take for granted .

I really enjoyed that, Ross. I'm realising nowadays that I'm a voyeur lol. Maybe it's just that my life is so boring, sigh. Bloody rain I'm not a pom but I do like a whinge about the weather.

20:57 Ross , Lady Elliot Island *IS* just the other side of Brisbane once you start thinking about distance in Australian terms instead of British 😀. For young people who think they might like Australia and who qualify for a temporary work visa , just do it , I have met many over the years and even employed some in years gone by , they all loved it . Covid caused a worker shortage on the agriculture sector because of the reliance on backpacker labour , it should be very easy now for those who qualify to gain entry and earn money while seeing some of the country .
Australia is built on and by immigrants from all over the world , I was an immigrant from the UK and have now lived here for 62 of my 67 years , have met people from many countries who made this place home .

One of the interesting problematics about emigrating from UK is $AUD/GBP exchange rates. I am a dual citizen and lived and worked in both countries on and off for 35 years. Over that period the GBP has been worth anything from $1.70 to $2.10. You might think now is the worst time given the UK's current financial difficulties. But just over a decade ago the Australian Resources Boom meant the Aussie dollar was above parity with the US $ (now less than 2/3 rds) - so the GBP exchange rates were even worse than now. Big impact if you are bringing house sale proceeds over to buy a house in Australia or you have a UK Government pension that you cannot transfer as a lump sum and it has to be paid in pounds. Wonder how big an issue this is for anyone thinking about migrating now? or do they think as Australian wages tend to be higher we will make it up?

    • @ThatJohnstonLife

Always watching the exchange rates Robin

@@ThatJohnstonLife Been told Aussie$ is one of the heaviest traded currencies in the world because it is resource based. If we have a resources boom again like in the 2010s don't give the GBP much hope of maintaining its current value - but a world wide recession would lessen a resources boom likelihood. But I am just an amateur watcher so could be totally wrong. At least our fundamentals are ok - massive trade surplus because of primary exports and we import only a small proportion of our food - unlike UK/Europe. Though our pollies bang on about it - public debt comparatively smaller as well.

I did my Padi course to scuba dive in Melbourne when I was 12. Here's a tip when you dive and want to attract fish around you bring down bread crumbs and twisties 😜 If you get ungry down there you could also munch on a salty twistie your self 😂
