Only going to work on a limited number of plastic types, polystyrene (think styrofoam cup), ABS, maybe PVC (PVC pipes are solvent cemented) Acetone is what is used to bond acrylic together. ABS is one of the simplest plastics to bond with a wide variety of adhesives available to do the job. Epoxy, silicone cement, super glue: all work
I am thinking 'of super expensive vehicle parts' that are basically bio-degradable in a hot engine compartment. Dumb idea to make so much from plastic and not solid metal. But here we are.$90,000 dollar plastic road palaces that are literally crumbling from the time you buy them. 50 years from now there will be no restored modern vehicle. From the 30's to the 70's yes! Plastic is to save weight and adds on 1000% more in costly replacement of cheap crappy ABS broken parts. This and other tricks with half a brain will prevent you from ditching a running vehicle due to 'no parts' or 'costly parts' Just saying'
ABS plastic is used mostly in automotive since it is very high temperature. 3D printer users know that they can smooth their printed parts with acetone vapors in an enclosure. Make sure you are doing all of this in a well ventilated area as ABS gives off volatile organic compounds.
Or you will end up as a 'Street Zombie'with no vehicle, and a seriously debilitating drug habit. This modern world is just full of nasty outcomes if you don't have a brain!
This is a good way of repairing ABS which is one of the more difficult plastics to work with. But you don't really need to dissolve bits of plastic in a solvent such as the suggested acetone here. Just use a fine artist's paint brush to apply acetone onto the parts to be glued together. Do this a few times until the surfaces are visibly melted and then stick the 2 parts together.
Make sure the plastic container you use is polypropylene (#5) cause some other types of plastic can melt when exposed to acetone. Or better yet use glass and/or metal.
@@Repairman10169 As I was watching these, my dad accidentally dropped the plastic filter on the dryer door when cleaning it so I will try your technique as we have copper tube, Acetone and of course, plenty of the best invention - Cable ties! Who knew you could stick them in a glue gun? haha Did you just feel the need to experiment with what can you use in a glue gun one day? Run outta sticks or something?
