Pep killed the the tie in the first leg, City didn't really need to go forward. It was really about soaking up the pressure and hitting them on the counter, which worked for the Haaland goal. Beyond that Bayern failed to convert which we know is statistically more important and wins game.

Tuchel literally played into Pep's hands. Everyone knows that Pep symbolises possession football but Pep has evolved and changed. He has become more versatile and flexible over time. Pep knew that the tie was done and he did not want his players exerting too much energy given the run of games they have coming up in all competitions and still chasing Arsenal in the league.
Just a few years ago, Pep would never have allowed the opposition to have more possession than his team even if it meant pushing City's defensive line higher up the pitch to suffocate the opponent. But that had its dangers because as we saw more often, City's high defensive one would be countered by dangerous counter attacks by the opposition.
This season, particularly in the UCL, we are seeing a more versatile and adaptable version of Pep.
Also, Man City have beaten Real Madrid in the past. Back in 2020/2021, City eliminated Real madrid in the semi finals and City did that with Jesus and Sterling as their forwards. So, I do not understand the obsession people have of Real Madrid beating City.
Even last season, City was the better team against Real Madrid. In that 1st leg where City won 4-3, City could have easily scored more had they been more clinical.
City now have Haaland and Alvarez who are more clinical than Jesus and Sterling.
Lets see what happens this season when they face each other.

The problems in those two matches cannot be brought down to tactics. In general I’d say Bayern was better (over the course of both matches) but their problem is that they are unsettled. You can see it in the Upamecano mistake but also in attack: No one likes to take the final shot. They just pass the ball around. There was one scene where a cross comes in and three Bayern players don’t go to the ball and it basically just becomes a side shift and Coman has the ball on the other wing. Also some bad luck in millimeter things that don’t go bayerns way. Choupo was missing in the first leg and in the second City did a great job of marking him. It’s easy to defend Bayern because only two of them will take shots and that’s Sane and Choupo. If choupo is not in the game or marked the Bayern offense has no idea who to give the ball to to score a goal. The Lewandowski aftermath. It can be seen in a lot of goals recently coming from defenders like pavard

The downside of looking at only tactics is not taking into account the effect of venue on players...Bayern were always to going have more possession, more motivated because they are at home, and City were always going to be less reluctant to press with more risk and hence effectively. This match was more of geme management and seeing out phases of play than attacking Bayern.

Haaland allows City to play more defensively in UCL cup ties - agreed Bayern were better at creating chances - but both legs feels like City's quality of player made the difference - Rodri goal, Dias defending, Ake defending first leg - Haaland was poor last night but he took his final chance really well. Pep being more practical and trusting defenders and Ederson was a big success in this 2nd leg, bump Pep up to 6.5 or 7.0. Now need to do it at the Bernebeau.

Bayern Vs Man City match revealed Man City's weak point. It is between the defense line and the deep midfield line. Rodri sometimes had to cover a large area because Stone dropped deeper, and if Stone stepped forward to form a double pivot with Rodri then there was an unguarded area between Man City's center-backs. City continued to have CB pressure on most of those chances. Did that mean they could still take a shot? Yes ofc, but to deal with pressure from an incoming center back that didn’t make it easy. Many of those shots were hard to make shots. They had two to three good chances that they failed to convert. That’s it. They did not dominate that game and they were let down because of the pressure four center backs were able to create. To say Tuchel dominated this game just isn’t true.

If you saw the game you can clearly tell that City defenders fumbled a lot in this game compared to last game, where they played their hearts out and Bayern had it perfect. Except… Upamecano :S
Bayern lack offensive consistency in finishing, which is something Bayern had suffered this year. City was lucky not to lose and the draw fits well with what both teams delivered. City werent able to do much and Bayern were really bad in finishing anything.

Pep's strategy in that 2nd leg was never about winning the possession battle but more of pouncing on mistakes from Bayern. It looks like Pep has re-strategized his approach to Champions league football because he has learnt over time that the team with higher possession does not always win games but the team that capitalizes on opponent mistakes does.
Also remember that Pep likes to dominate opponents in their own half which means City have to push up and play with a higher defensive line. A higher defensive line means more risk because the opponent will be able to exploit the huge amounts of space behind the defensive line like we saw Real Madrid do last season when they faced City.
To be honest, I like Pep's approach now because it is not too high risk and looks to punish the opposition when they make a mistake.

if you claim that city purposely didnt push forward to save energy for their upcoming games, that's absolute nonsense and a completely surface level assumption. the only thing i will give is that pep was not pressured to play differently this game because of the first leg score, and thus they played the exact same way for the second leg and gave bayern the initiative to make changes to their gameplan to try and score 3 goals on city.
there are only two real differences between city and bayern because otherwise, they were relatively even.
the first was how clinical their forwards were (and upamecano being completely suffocated in both legs and making massive errors). even in bayern's psg game, you could see how they dominated psg's midfield but were unable to score against psg at all despite all that domination.
the second was how comfortable each team was conceding possession to defend. bernardo came out for an interview after the game and talked about their mentality shift this year in how they realized that they COULDN'T (not didn't want to) dominated possession all the time against top teams so they had to be comfortable defending.
but for bayern, you can see in their bundesliga matches how some teams approach them. one of the key differences between bundesliga games and champions league games is the amount of respect champions league teams give to bayern (and the players look a bit sharper in the ucl generally too). bundesliga teams have learnt to push high up against bayern to try and suffocate them, which usually leads to a complete beatdown by a counter-attacking bayern in full stride or an "unexpected" draw and loss. do this enough times, and you will start chipping points off bayern. even in the ucl, a young barca side undergoing a rebuild gave them a lot of problems in the first match they faced each other just because of the intensity and little respect they gave to bayern's midfield, but otherwise they simply cruised through every other game. against psg, psg's press was non-existent and the midfield was happy to let bayern have the ball, so the defense was never pressured the entire game. they ended up pressuring the psg defense like city did to them and almost forced them to make mistakes that costed them the tie.

Today it's true man, even tho we knew City already win on aggregate before the match. It's just rare seeing Pep's team being dominated especially like the first half. I think i like this year City and Pep, they not possession crazy team anymore. They play a lot like Liverpool who would give you the ball then counterpress or wait for the fast and deadly counter. I believe this City team can win against Madrid if Pep could keep Vini and Rodrigo on guard because City(and other high pressing team) problem is on the transition.

need a chelsea vs real 2. I feel lampard actually did well with a 541 diamond/ 5221 but without fell into acnelottis trap. After not scoring at half time and not making any changes keeping kante and gallagher as the 2 AMs while chabolah was unimpactful sealed a lost in a game they had to chase. Mount I feel would have been more effective than gallagher as he had the pace to attack spaces while could fulfil a similar role.
I also dont understand mudryk as lwb while keeping cabolah and the focus on crosses when you only have havertz who is not a target man and the sole striker. Kante playing almost as a second striker did not make sense either

For real. Both matches weren't "Pep football" and Bayern did very well. Bayern make too many mistakes and don't have a good stiker this year, wich can make the difference. ... At the end City absolutely deserved the win because they defended very well. ... I think Pep isn't entirely happy with the performance, but he doesn't have to prove anything anymore and deserves the CL this year.
