  • Exclusive DW interview: Former President George W. Bush reflects on his relationship with Chancellor Angela Merkel and her legacy.
"Merkel brought class and dignity to a very important position and made very hard decisions. She did what's best for Germany, and did so based upon principle," former U.S. President George W. Bush said in an interview with DW Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl ahead of Chancellor Angela Merkel's farewell visit to the White House on Thursday, July 15.
The interview at the Bush family's summer home in Maine was conducted as part of the DW documentary "Angela Merkel - Navigating a World in Crisis," which will be published on our DW Documentary RUclips channel in September, shortly before the federal elections which will determine Merkel's succession.

His war was much more personal to America, so got a lot more media attention than the military operations of previous administrations. Combine this with him losing the popular vote and the shady dealings in Florida in the 2000 election, and it becomes clear that instead of fixing the problems of the system, it’s just easier to call GWB a war criminal.

I don’t think that’s true. I think they believe their core policy decisions were sound but mistakes were made within those decisions. Look, Afghanistan and Iraq are two wars history will not look kindly on. That being said, Sadam Hussein was a legitimately evil dude & I think removing him from power was the right thing. Did they do it the right way? No. Is the Middle East safer now than it was in the early 2000s? No. And Afghanistan sheltered & protected terrorists. That’s were Bin Laden was after 9/11.
Bush is one of those politicians who…I don’t agree with him on pretty much anything. But I can’t help but like him. That’s rare.

I think Iraq is safer now. First of all, there is no saddam there to cause the US to bomb the country again...thats a big step in the right direction!
All the muppets in this forum that simply say "war criminal! Period." just dont see the bigger picture. Saddam was the causal source of the whole mess. The US made it worse of course, but the Iraqi people, if they had any shred of sense, would be thanking their lucky stars that they didnt end up under the totalitarian rule of a guy like Kim Jong.

That he is a good man at the core is evidenced by his legacy. Now, I don't mean that ironically.
Iraq was certainly a mistake - but the comparison with Russian aggression against Ukraine is grossly off.
However, while G. Bush is assessed only through the lens of Iraq, it is completely overlooked that it was he who pushed through the PEPFAR programme - to which he is credited with saving 25 million lives. It was (and is) so successful that it has had an impact on life expectancy in a number of African countries.
The joke is that almost no one knows about it. Liberals only see Bush through Iraq, conservatives are not a comparable group that would appreciate a humanitarian program. In other words: he got no positive political points for it, and he knew it. And yet he did it because he believed it was the right thing to do.
If we want politicians to make the right decisions, this must not be forgotten in evaluating Bush's legacy. If we can't even appreciate saving 25 million lives, then we don't deserve to have the future be kind to us.
