      Well said. Need more actual ball talk and more flowers. One guy who has particularly ushered in the approach where players are being mostly trashed is Skip Bayless. I know it's supposed to be a show and you're left wondering how he truly feels, but what he says/what people get to hear is probably 15% praise and 85% trashing of the players. He has taken it to a point where even good performances need to be trashed by cherry picking some part that wasn't that good. Nothing real about that anymore and I just don't see the purpose and how that would be worthwhile; what good is in trashing people 24/7; toxic/negative even if not genuine.

      The formula of building up one player by tearing the other down is worst of all on Undefeated, but SAS has certainly leaned on that from time to time. The format on First Take of two loudmouths yelling at each other is unbearable regardless of what they say. Players as media? Depends. They're not all perfect. Kobe had this vision of analyzing basketball that might be best with ex-players bc it would be so rigorous, and I do like that sort of thing. "Details" was never entertaining though, so "new media" will probably be some combination of the two.

Far too long has the media controlled false narratives or helped push a franchises agenda. If a player can articulate the game, show passion & bring insight while actively playing at a high level I’m here for it. Reporters are mad at it because at the end of the day they’ll only be reporters. Whereas some of these athletes can still be great players as well as great reporters.

Players were always monetizing off them - just look at average NBA player salary dynamic. The problem with nowadays media is that reporters and analysts are trying to become a human clickbait (Skip Bayless, Stephen A, Colin Cowherd etc). And these talkshow heads bash players for views without making in-depth analysis (classic example - Mark Cuban destroying Skip Bayless). Stephen A. saying that new media isn't going to take over really exposes how intimidated he is by what new media is doing. People like JJ Redick, Draymond, Amare Stoudemire, and even Pat Bev to some degree are showing that people want more insight on the ACTUAL GAME rather than the narratives and outside aspects that don't matter as much. He knows that he has to get with the times before he's gone from ESPN and out of the limelight because new media is taking over and people are going to that more than anything.

      Not only that, but SAS spent years perfecting his craft. Players are transitioning from the court to the media with little experience in the field. But the experience they bring can't be ignored. The narrative of players have been spoken by non players. Now the narrative is being spoken by those who are actually playing the game, which brings a whole new world of information that the media wouldn't have access to. Draymond with Chuck, Kenny, and Shaq is going to be magic!

    Pro tip: In addition to repeating the mantra "New media is here to stay and you got some new media in you," how about defining what new and old media are for your audience, getting clear about the differences between the two, then explaining WHY new media appeals to people, is a necessary corrective for old media, or has what it takes to last. Once this is done, then you could use this context to frame your opinion about Pat Bev. It would have been a great strategy.
    Reading the phenomenon of Pat's massive success this week through the lens of new vs old media is insightful and says something not only about Pat, but about media itself and its shifting landscape. In fact, it really captures that shifting landscape exceptionally well. You sorted of hinted at some of this stuff, but it never really happened, at least not in the way it could have. But then again, you promised to revisit all of this on deeper level this summer. Looking forward to it.

    Stephen A. is playing a character and it worked out well for him financially. Go back to his interview with Allen Iverson to see the real him. He started changing around the time of Cold Pizza / First Take after he got fired and came back to the network as a contributor. His voice inflection changed and the theatrics came into play. But like I said it worked out for HIM.

      I would say more like great mid-media and template setters for their format. However they are all a decades into their retirements. Never have actual players, still playing, stepped deep into the media role. It's revolutionary what Draymond is doing.

    I love hearing from Draymond. But let's not act like his comments and knowledge of the game is not a rarity when you hear from athletes. Most athletes that speak don't articulate their thoughts as clear as Draymond, they don't know the history of the game, and don't watch as much of their sport outside of their own opponents as you'd think. Give Dray his flowers, but this "new media" label needs to be given out sparingly.

    SAS is just afraid they're coming for his job. But guys like NBA players don't have the patience to sit everyday to talk about LeBron or make up some crazy takes to pass the time. So he's actually kinda right when he says that there's also skills to what he does. If they do things the way they do it's because people watch it

      The Stephen A sports analysis playbook: 1) predict the betting favourite to win, 2) complain that struggling players need to step up, 3) become offended by a cohost, 4) mention how much you like Florida weather, 5) attack anything that threatens ESPN profits

    I love what you Draymond bring to the table with your podcast. I enjoy hearing players and former players perspectives. Personally, I prefer hearing from those who actually played the game and have deeper knowledge. I used to watch First Take, but now The only occasions, I watch First Take is when JJ Reddick is on, his podcast is also a favorite of mine. However, I noticed when Stephen A made that statement, If he’s reacting like that, he knows it’s true that viewers are tired of hearing from those who never played . Tired of Stephen A and his theatrics . Welcome to new media 😎.

    If I'm being honest I am all for the new media. I really like what the young guys bring to the media world. Black Lives Matter, talking about mental health, talking about world issues, incorporating it with hoops, they bring a young person's perspective instead of the old, grumpy analyst takes we are bombarded with. People love Charles Barkley, Shaq, Stephen A, but if I'm really being honest, their takes are so old school and don't fit in with this current generation. You need outspoken players like Draymond who bring in that youthful, open minded understanding view instead of the typical, old fashioned viewpoint we are so accustomed to. Hope Draymond keeps up this gig as I see this opening and creating a new pathway for him after his basketball career.

  • @Jugivadi
    @Jugivadi 2 года назад +17

    Well said Dray. Those old fools operate on a win lose mindset. Stephen A got a bit of that too. Plus until you play the game, you really are just a watcher and talker. That's why Dray is a valued commentator. You gain an understanding from playing the game that non-players just don't have. Plus the old players/analyst grew up on disrespect rather than respect.

    this is such a great explanation! these players do things on a nightly basis that only a few selected in the world can do, hating on one to lift another just makes no sense. plus the basic rule of comparison is that you compare things all else being equal. when one or more variables are different things are no longer comparable. so why do we do it? to create rivalries? to create the "other"? such a eurocentric way to look at things. I love the community approach of new media, giving credit where it is due and appreciating different ways of being great - it is not soft - it is right.

    Also, Lebron and Steph do totally different things on the basketball court, truly great in their own ways. You couldn't have the last 15 years of NBA basketball "with Lebron but, without Steph" or "with Steph but, without Lebron." They're totally great, totally unique players. Both have had a massive impact on basketball.

He doesn’t want to make it personal with Patrick Beverley, because he knows Pat Bev is going to annihilate him
