Very helpful. I'm just starting cold plunge and picked up a portable version. Withe the bottom drain spigot, I'm hoping to route the pipe from it and just return the water over the lip. Cheers and Chills! 🙂
Great video. Thank you for pulling this together. I have been wanting to create a similar set up in my 100 gallon tank out here in Minneapolis, MN, but the cold has really made that challenging. I have been using a deicer in my tank all winter and this has allowed us to plunge everyday. Love your filter and UV set up, but will likely need to insulate this pump to keep it viable from December to April. FWIW, I plan on going with a cold shower option for the hot months out here from June to August. Thanks again for your time and video!

Great video thanks. Just so you know the lower port on the filter pump goes to the high side and the higher port goes to the lower hole in the tub. Great video worked great.
Why not use chlorine to kill the bacteria like a pool?
I have a Nurecover portable ice bath which has 1 drainage tap/point at the bottom. As I can't drill holes and I'm not too keen on punching holes through it for a second outlet, would the pump set up you have be able to pump the water into the ice bath via a hose that hangs over the edge into the top of the ice bath?
This is perfect for us beginners. I was using my pool in the winter where the water was around 50-60 degrees. unfortunately it gets over 80 degrees in the summer. Question, how long does the water last with this setup before you need to change the water all together? I live in socal where its hot more often than not, so I will have to use ice to get it to the temp I need. Great video thank you for the info!
With this set up, I can usually get 2 to 3 weeks of the water staying clear. If you were disciplined enough to shower before plunging, I think you could possibly extended even further.

Great video thank you. Was wondering how long you have been doing the cold plunge and what kind of benefits you notice from it health wise. I started taking cold showers a couple weeks ago first thing in the morning and seem to be having a whole host of benefits.
I’m about 2 month in at the point. I definitely feel energized and accomplished when I’m done. I’ve also noticed I’m less shocked when I get in. As for other health benefits, I can’t say I’ve seen anything that I can directly link to the plunge yet. All the best on the showers… that seems worse to me :)

I got the same horse trough. Was hoping some chlorine would be enough to keep it clear but after just 2 weeks of use it is disgusting. Gotta figure something like this out i guess

Pay thousands of dollars for a chiller... Which is why I only plunge in the winter :)
What's missing is a sand filter or a cartridge filter. Hook it up inline to the pump where the inlet goes to sand filter and filtered water comes back into the tub. You can then either pull out and clean the cartridge or backwash the sand filter. Just running through the pump is only going to cause large debris to collect in the pump. UV doesn't do any good when it's outside exposed to sunlight. You can use small bromine or chlorine tablets to kill the microorganisms. You can find a decent sand filter or cartridge filter for less than $100. The bathtub drain is a clever idea. I have a refrigerator pump for my cold soak tub, but I also have a pool so I was considering doing something like this because the refrigerator filter is small and needs to be cleaned every few days to keep it running. I'm likely going to get a cartridge filter and a small pump and do something similar. This is a cool build!
I realize one hole has to be higher than the other but Do you know if it makes a difference on how low or high and how close together you make your holes for the filter?
at the end you ask does it get easier - it will get easier when you start dunking your face! I'm amazed you don't get headaches leaving your head out like that

With this setup, water stays clear for 2-3 weeks. I think it could increase if I added an oil sponge. Currently not using this setup because it is summer and I don't have a chiller.
Would you happen to have a solution for filtering water in cold plunge tubs that are of the thermo-insulated plastic kind? (Ie nurecover, etc.) I only have one opening to draw water out
I don’t have experience with those. My guess is that you’d need a pump with more power to get the water up and over the edge.
I’ve got a small above ground pool laying around would that be suitable? IT’s chemically treated regularly waters just don’t feel like throwing money when I got something that can probably be used

Great video. I'm using the same tank and have recently started seeing cancer/reproductive health warnings on galvanized steel products in Cali and Oregon. Do you know anything about that/have any suggestions for non toxic/affordable liners or sealants?

You can buy 100 gallon and larger plastic stock tanks. I got mine from princess auto here in canada for $190 CDN. It's general use is for livestock, but works great for a plunge.

Any feedback on placement of holes for the inlet and outlet. I assume the lower one is the inlet for the pump.
Because it is a weak pump, I found best results flipping them and having inlet as top one.
Thanks for the video. I'm curious if your tank leaked when you first got it? I just bought one from Home Depot and it leaks, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to seal the seams.
No leaks on mine. All good.

I think you could get rid of the plumbers putty and just use the rubber washer on the inside to prevent leaks

Great video. However, I suggest getting a chiller and cold plunge barrel. That is what I use and will run you around $2,000 and save you headache after headache. Not to mention what do you do in the summer time? Adding bags of ice is not a real good solution and that can get very expensive. I love a good DIY but after a few headaches its so worth the money to buy a nice unit. Mine is 39 degrees every day and ready when I get home 365 days a year.
Agreed. But, money id too tight for that luxury purchase.

With the inlet to the pump at the higher port, is the filter able to get a lot of the stuff that settles to the bottom?
No, but it gets the stuff floating in the top.

Just bought some of the materials from this video. However, your hole saw is inch and a half, but your sink drain is inch and a quarter? Is this correct??
If you’re following, my set of exactly, yes. The way the sink drain is shaped it. Kind of tapers at the head. The slightly larger drillbit allows the sink drain to get close to flush. Make sense?

Hard to create. Probably need to drop $500-$800+ for a pro chiller once the temps warm up.
I bought a chest freezer, temp control, gfci cord, pump/filter. Treat it like a hot tub. Works great. Probably cost me about 1k to hook up. Go about 1-2 months before I have to drain/clean it.
Can you link me to the hoses that are needed that attach to the filter?
The hoses come with the filter if you buy the same one I have.
I wonder if instead of installing two holes...couldnt you raise the pool a foot or two and use the hole provided then just let it feed back into top?

I have an inflatable tube. The screw is not compatible with the pump. Why don't put both filter tubes inside the water?
This particular filter doesn't have a strong enough pump to pull the water up and over the edge. It needs to be gravity fed.

I dont understand why you need a pump. Would the UV Light be enough to sanitize the water or what am I missing about the necessity of using a water pump ?
Pump filters out miscellaneous debris, oils, etc.
Would the 330 be good for a 55/60gal tank?

Yup. I’ve considered giving it a try. Some people just like to avoid chemicals.

No. Was fine once it thawed.

Hi I am new to all this and I want to start this but I don’t want to be spending 100s on ice so how do I keep it cold I am 16 and need to convince my parents I know this is a late comment but if you could help I would appreciate it
The bad news is that's there's no cheap way to keep it cool. If you live far enough north (or south, if you're on the other side of the equator) then the ambient temp can keep the water cold. I was plunging in the winter, so I was good. But, if outside temps are warm, the only way to cool is ice or a chiller. Some people make their own ice, but that's a lot of work. Might just have to go for cold showers until the weather turns cold near you.
Get 4 or 5 bottles of 2 litters each, fill them up with water and put them in your house freezer. Once the bottles are frozen put them in the water tank 2 or 3 hours before you take the plunge.
@@monocabezon I tried something very similar with really nice cooler ice packs. The marketing material on Amazon said the packs were equivalent to 10 pounds of ice, or something like that. At best I was able to drop the temperature six or 7°.

@@owenjohnson4965 ah… it would certainly help some. Another thing that would help with some thing like lotion would be some sponge balls that you can find on Amazon. They are designed to soak oil out of the water of hot tubs. That could be helpful.

Does a 1.25" hole saw not work? I see you linked the 1.5" hole saw but the drain is 1.25"
I remember being confused as well... but, that's what I needed for my setup.
@The.Cold.Plunge just tested 1.25" hole on some wood and the threading of the drain is too large. Will test 1 3/8 before I drill into the tub. About to have your setup sometime today or tomorrow.

@The.Cold.Plunge just filled it up today. 1.375" hole saw is perfect for those drains. Plumbers putty didn't stay, too large of a gap since since bevel of drain cant go flush with tub. Just used a rubber washer and tightened fast, no leaks. Had to put some Teflon tape where I have the tube connecting to the pipe with the hose clamp.
Was able to utilize existing stock tank drain plug for water going out to filter. Have a hose shutoff valve going into the tank, then a 3/4" -> 1" adapter into a 1" brass pipe that the filter tube connects to.
no, it's never gonna get easy lol. but the great news is there's NOTHING that makes you feel high hours later in the day (i've never tried or have desire to do drugs fyi). great idea man!
Yeah, I think that people who talk about the lingering effect are more talking about increased positivity and mental clarity. I can't say that I experience that in a way that I could attribute to cold plunging.

You have the lines crossed on the filter/pump. Inlet is on top, outlet on bottom. Cool vid though

@@The.Cold.Plunge all of the pump filters I have used like that have the inlet on top. Works best if drain from tub is bottom fed bulkhead to inlet filter pump. Outlet filter pump to top bulkhead of tub.
Hey friend, i am using the same pump,i adapted to a freezer, but this is the second time it happens, after 3-4 weeks, my water is murky is so weird, i used about 1/4 food grade petoxide. I have only used it 4x after showering. Anybody had this issue? I suspect the cartridge filter maybe?
I’m not really an expert in this area, but consider getting some of the chemical pool strips to test the different pH balances and what not related to your water. That might give you an idea of the condition of the water, and how you might need to improve it to prevent what you’re experiencing.
Is that UV light safe for humans? Brand looks a little suspect but maybe I'm being too cautious.
I don't have it on when I'm using. It is under the cover, so not ever looking at it. For whatever that's worth.

I have a tub with a drain hole at the bottom (for the outgoing water); is it necessary to make a hole for the clean incoming water? Or is there a reason I could not hang it over the side of the tub?
The pump in the video isn’t strong enough to pump water up and into the tub. But, use a stronger pump/filter and it should work.
