The most amazing thing when looking again at this footage that I had originally seen a couple years ago, is that the actual video quality of this 4 year old camera is better than new GFX 100 video you recently posted.. better gradations and MUCH better highlights roll-off.. basically no highlight clipping anywhere! Quite astonishing.
Also, I am amazed at the sharpness of all the footage using the DSLR Magic Anamorphic Adapter, specially the lack of chromatic aberrations and excellent corner sharpness. Ive used the same adapter with several cameras and lenses, and (even if stopped down) I could never get proper image quality. Would love to know your exact shooting set-up, settings, and with which pick-up lenses used.

I have a question please, those wide angle shots I'm assuming you used the Sony 16-35mmf4, I noticed that star effect on the lamps, did you shoot above f11 to get that effect ? And if yes how did you manage to get such good low light performance without showing noise ? Thank you and again congratulations for the outstanding footage !

なんと7年前の映像。4年前にこの映像を初めて観て、当時貧乏学生だった僕は中古のa7RIIを持ってハリウッドに飛び込んだのを鮮明に覚えてます。
今ではFX3などが主力機になってますが、「良い映像を作る」という観点からは、制作者の技術やアイディアがカメラの機能を上回るということを証明していると感じられる、何年経っても色褪せない素敵な映像だと思います。

What ISO did you shoot?
Great footage. I would recommend popping some of the color that is in the shots. Even just selected colors in part. It is very washed out and neutral, and pulling some of the color highlights would pull the individual shots together. Great selection of music to match the rhythm!

nice video, i have the same camera and also make videos with it. I have a question, what PLog settings do you use while shooting? Also do you shoot with neutral color and then after use different color gradings?
did you find vignetting with the 16-35 or any focus issues? or mostly use the 50? looks super rad

wit the Anamorphic lens? If so, it might be hard to focus on subjects moving towards you.

I use VisionColor(www.vision-color.com/) LUTs and Lumetri color in Adobe Premiere Pro.
0.preparing... start Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015. put clip in time line.
1.create adjustment layer and put above the clip.
2.add Lumetri color in adjustment layer.
3.select LUT in Lumetri color.
Recently, I have been using VisionColor ImpulZ(vision-color.com/impulz/) Kodak Vis3 50D 5203 (DP)_FPE.
4.add Lumetri color in the clip.
5.change parameters as follows(example for night footage).
contrast:-25,high light:-50,shadow:+50,white:+35,black:-25
reduce red in RGB curve
6.adjust brightness with exposure parameter in each clip.

Don't know how much color grading you did. It's a light hand if anything. I like that it's still flat enough to see the dynamic range. This just might be the tipping point for me. Surely, I can't upgrade to the Canon 5D mkIV, what with the lack of a compression scheme that results in a video file size 9x other comparable cameras

I love the video mate, how do you get the anamorphic look? slr anamorphic is any good? most of the videos I saw really sucked, too much distortion but this one is spot on
+Joao Fezas Vital Some barrel distortion occurs.
Shooting of Yokohama Chinatown (dark street where there is a red and yellow signs) are not using Anamorphot.

4K 24p,Picture Profile:PP7(S-log2),White Balance:Auto,Shutter Speed:1/50,F number and ISO adjust according to the surrounding brightness with over exposured from +1.0 to +2.0.
Of course use a variable ND filter during the day.
Export H.264 mp4,target bitrate 96Mbps.

I think 50mm is basic focal length for video.

I am purchasing a A7RII tomorrow and wondered if you could recommend a lens? I was told to go for a 55mm Prime for better light. However your F4 zoom seems to be holding up very well in low light. What do you suggest?
+SalimAdamcom 16-35mm was used in daylight footage. I do not recommend wide angle zoom for video.

ISO6400 more than noise is noticeable.
Hi, were you able to mount the anamorphic adapter to the fe 16-35? Im curious as the specs have the adapter at 62mm and the lens (16-35) has a 72mm thread.
+Kaizen2013v I do not use Anamorphot with 16-35mm.
1.Anamorphot can not use with wide angle lens.
Suggested taking lens based on sensor size:
35-85mm focal length can be used for S35 and APS-C sensor.
40-85mm focal length can be used for Full Frame sensor.
2.need 72mm-62mm step down ring.

A quick ask...I'm recently seeking the best way to film something at night, low light condition in the city. And the choice of equipment is just driving me crazy...wondering about your set up, looks so awesome!! I have my Sony A7r ii with Sony lens but filming at night just brings a lot of granules, wondering if I change to the lens you use, Zeiss Loxia, will that solve the problem? To have a clean night view film, or at least clean as yours! Or is there something extra equipments that need to be added?
your f /iso is the factor here for ex. if you use the kit with the variable aperture its normal to have more noise, his Loxia has f/2 , another factor is the super 35/apsc mode that has better low light performance with noise than full frame

beautiful! is this camera way better than one of those Canon t5ii? I majored in broadcast communications, but I'm currently working in a nonmedia related job and I don't want to lose my skills(it has been awhile since I've touched a camera). I am used to being more in a studio setting, so I sincerely don't know which dslr to get. I don't want to buy anything crazy expensive, but I want something good & compact enough to keep my skills in tact. I'm interested in landscape/portrait photography and documentaries. Any help is appreciated.

I can't decide between A7R2 and A7S2. I would do mainly photography (astrophotography mainly) so the R would be the best one but I want to do also videos, like travel videos etc... The S is superior for videos but the 12mp sensor is limited for the photography I want to do. Videos would be a smaller part for me but I would still love to make 4k quality videos. What would you advice? Is the R version better suited for Photography and some video or the S?

Very impressive! I'm an owner of A7rii as well. How did you get noise-free image from high ISO(like 6400)? Mine gets very noisy already when set to 2000.
Most scenes are ISO 1600 or less.
When shooting in the s-log2 is to +1 or more overexposures.

Looks slightly soft in 4k on my LG 34uc87 Ultra Wide 4k display.
What has a curve got to do with anything? Forget the curve - lets talk about the centre. I watched a 4k video filmed with an Arri camera on RUclips and your video; and this camera is certainly deceiving. Sure, the image looks great on lower resolutions - but when viewed at it's full resolution then it looks soft and underwhelming. Just my honest opinion.
+Charlie Williams If you watch a high definition video on a standard definition monitor then its going to look sharp too. It's all relative. All i'm saying is that I compared the 2160P footage from this camera with e.g. Sony F65 footage / Red Epic Dragon Footage / Arri Alexa / Cannon C500 4K footage on youtube and it's definitely extremely soft and lacking the more intricate details that I saw in those other cameras. You can even see grain in the peoples faces. Of course, there will be a difference in 50k cameras with 5k + lenses vs a 2.5k camera. Nevertheless, it still surprised me since on normal monitors the footage from this camera looks indistinguishable from high end cameras - it's only when you view it on 4k resolution IPS monitors that you appreciate the difference between higher end cameras and this one.
+Daniel K The first time I saw this video, it was on a 1920x180 21" screen - looked fine to me. Now watching it on a 5K iMac at 2580x1440 and can see the softness that you speak of. It isn't subtle, either, as if shot slightly out of focus in the people shots. Back to looking at the A7Sii for the thousandth time (doh).
+Daniel K Greetings from a generic 1080p display, I too can also see this. I think it's probably hard to focus on a small display, as the 4K preview sharpens it up.
+Daniel K the reason is probably that the RII performs line skipping in 4k recording which makes it look a bit unsharp compared to footage the SII records. If you set your RII to APS-C mode for videos it does not skip lines and you will get a sharper image.

Would you get the a7sii over the a7rii for video? I really doubt I'll use the camera in such low light as to choose the a7s over the a7r... The megapixels is such a big plus for the a7r in my opinion - for printing large photos... in your experience with the a7rii, is it good enough for low light?
