  • In this video, we prove, wordlessly, that the area of a right triangle is the product of the two lengths on the hypotenuse lying on either side of the tangent point to the incircle.

    This just makes me want to sit and remember how it was to experience things with the eyes of a child.

    The formula can also be derived by finishing the ravi-substitution and doing some algebra with other formulas. Let z be the side of the square.
    The standard formula's give
    2A=(x+z)(y+z), and
    A=rs=r(x+y+z), where r is the radius of the incircle, and s was the semiperimeter. In right triangles, r=z, so
    A=(x+z)(y+z)-z(x+y+z)=xy.
    I had to learn a lot of area formulas for triangles, mainly to solve geometric inequalities, but I never encountered A=xy. And the fact that the geometric derivation is more shorter that the most obvious algebraic derivation is also pretty cool.

      Interesting, I’ve only encountered the Ravi Sub in inequalities.

    Hi.can you prove that if a circle can be inscribed in a rectangular trapezoid, then the area of the trapezoid is equal to the product of the bases?
