DIY LIGHTSABERS with NEOXPIXEL blade and PARTY MODE || Arduino controlled || How to Make

- Kylo Ren walked into my workshop and demanded that I make him a lightsaber, and wasn't taking no for an answer! So, I made him two lightsabers -- a Kylo Ren style saber and a Rey / Anakin Skywalker style saber. You definitely want to WATCH until the END to see KYLO’S REACTION when he tries out his newly constructed saber, and finds out it also has a PARTY MODE….
These lightsabers are not intended to be replicas by any means (after all, every jedi’s rite of passage is making their own light saber). I wanted to do two things with these saber builds: (1) make a quality metal hilt that looks good out of inexpensive plumbing parts, and (2) create some awesome blade effects using Arduino-controlled LED strips (aka neopixels). Each saber cost less than $75 to make.

EDIT: I accidentally said “screws”, but clearly, I’m using ¼” bolts to hold the hilt together.

This is a re-upload -- had to rework the intro a bit! I would greatly appreciate the subscribers who watched/liked the previous upload hitting the thumbs up button again to let RUclips know to recommend this to other people -- Thanks!
I loved the quality of the build (double shrink wrapping) and the tutorial pacing. Excellent
Thank you!
Going to start calling you, Doc Hollywood. You are a man of many talents. The old lady is up there wondering what I am laughing for (I don't laugh) but I just did. Hmmm. Congratulations, you are a day or two away from 50k subs. Very nice build
+PacoWang thanks! Glad you got a laugh out of it :) it was fun to do something like this for a change.
probably a couple weeks still before 50k, but that is a good thing since I need to get everything in line for the giveaway I'm planning.
This looks beautiful! Personal little peeve is that the tubing is still open at the ending A cap of some sort would've finished it all for me. Having that said, I might give this a try someday
Thanks! Yea, there are shops where you can buy tubes with tube caps, that aren't too much. But with shipping it would have put the total cost for the saber at $100 (and delayed the video while I waited for shipping from Europe :) ). But, that would be really cool. Hoping you make one and improve upon mine! If you do and share pics, tag me on Instagram (@modustrialmaker)
How do I remove party mode?
As a huge star wars fan I appreciate this on every level 👌
+Paulina thanks!!
Can't believe I missed this one when I looked back at some of your videos before. Might be fun to have some lightsaber duels once the Covid risks have passed. Be safe, love the content.
I love the removable batteries and quick disconnects in your build, though I would still prefer to fix the circuit to work with standard batteries for ease of replacement.
Ha, for sure! Same to you!
Great video man! I wired mine based on your wiring diagram that shows only 4 connections made to the Nano board: GND (by VIN), VIN, D5, & D8. In the video, however, you have two more: one going to the second GND pin (by D2) & one to pin 5V. I'm relatively new to wiring, so if you explained it in the video, I'm not grasping the concepts. Can you explain the differences in your wiring diagram vs. in the video? I'd really appreciate it!
Watching this former video 6 years later it's really funny 🤭🤭🤭
That was fun! The end part with Kylo Ren dancing was greaet. I like how you were able to use so many just regular plumbing parts to make this look so cool!
+Bruce A. Ulrich thanks! I had fun with it...a little out there, but we all gotta do something just because we want to every once in a while :)
Do you only need Arduino nano, push Button and Battery holders and Led for Electronics?
cool builds, but the party mode seems a bit overboard! thanks for the great tutorial
It is a bit overboard 😁 thanks!
Awesome how you walked through everything. Nicely done!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Your code is great, using it for my own build, just turns out i have too few amps on my battery, but your type wouldnt fit
Had the same problem. Can drop the brightness a little on the leds[i] = CHSV( gHue, 250, 220); down to leds[i] = CHSV( gHue, 250, 150) or so... power consumed is almost exponential to the brightness.
Much better camera work this time around! Loved the editing and simple explanation of the build.
Thanks! I really just changed the intro...but as they say, first impressions are everything :) I was so caught up in trying a new sketch idea, I forgot the basics, like needing to SHOW what the build is before I start talking about it!
Modustrial Maker honestly the intro is awesome now, and the video although you may have not done anything different (could also be my fault in the previous video) this video doesn't look blurry to me. I'll keep on watching and always provide my insight constructively!
Always appreciate the feedback, especially this time, since it is an outlier in style and substance. I'd like to do one or two "just for fun" projects a year like this, but certainly not more.
RE: blurry video -- I have noticed there is a period of 5 minutes or so immediately after RUclips says a video has "finished" processing a new upload, where the video is only available in 360p resolution (no HD). It seems like RUclips puts it up before the HD processing is done -- kinda odd, they really should just wait until it is done processing at the full resolution. I have a hunch you might have watched during this time. The video definitely looks like crap in 360p :)
Modustrial Maker yeah I've noticed too, when I used to produce 4k videos for an old channel of mines it'd do the same. Wasn't my camera or my adobe preimere it was just youtube. Tbh some of my videos weren't even made with a camera, just images drawn from the web and licensed. Feel free to check out that channel sometime and give me your opinion on my editing (stuff from 2 years back is me) ! -> dataradar
Cool, I subbed and will check it out. Hoping for 100k this year, but taking it one step at a time. Right now I'm focusing on 50k, and planning a really cool giveaway when I get there. (hint: one of the prizes was alluded to in this video, and it isn't a light saber) I'm still debating about biting the bullet and getting premiere. I use Davinci Resolve 14 and honestly find it amazing for free software. I'd rather spend my money on camera gear -- a gopro 6 and second DSLR are high on the list. (I shoot a 7D Mk II and have been eyeing the 6D Mk II .)
Can you make a version of this with sound effects
What speaker did you use? I didn't see anything about a speaker but you have sound so I assume there's a speaker in there
Exelente proyecto Podrías fabricar me uno? Y cuanto me saldría?
Amazing work. I have a doubt. In the web the schematics shows a resistor and a capacitor. You use it o it only for led protection?
If I have only a 2 pin button, how should I do the wiring?
On/off or momentary?
@@modustrial Momentary
Does this have the motion sound effects or were those added after? Idk if the AM has an accelerometer.
Heck yes. Another modustrial maker video.
Now make a voice chsnger
Thanks! This one isn't finding the audience my others did, but I like it :) A voice changer would be cool!
Hi-
This is the first time I am using a Nano and appreciate the helpful video! Is there a way I could slow down the light up from bottom to top of the blade for use with a Darksaber which has a slow acceleration? Thanks!
Great video. You're upping your game! : )
I'm trying....thanks!
would you be able to link your instructable? I cant find your project on there by searching your name
Hello, i want made this item but need a little bit help. Can I use a simple button? Do I need to make changes to the source code if I can use it? (I have 2 pin push button)
Nice video man! My son and I would really like to make one of these but are compete newb’s when it comes to programming and arduino’s. Would you be willing to share how to get your program onto a nano? Thanks in advance!
Thanks! I would suggest checking out some of the old Arduino videos from nerdforge and i like to make stuff. They are what I learned from and cover the basics in more detail than I could in comments :)
Wouldn't passing the 5V+ve and gnd to the leds through the arduino nano limit the current the leds actually recieve? Considering the neopixel documentation, each of the red, green and blue diodes take up 20mA at full brightness. So that would be 2.4Amps for say 120 LEDS. Would passing this many amps from the nano be possible?
I've been trying to follow your guide and make the Kylo Ren saber as an engineering project but I don't know if it's an issue with the code or the wiring that is making mine not work. Any suggestions?
It would of been great if you would of connect a speaker to your light-saber for sound!! That is the only thing that disappointing me. You where almost there.
Hi! I've done the exact same things you have done, but the strips aren't powering all the way, what can I do?
there's a spot in the setup for the number of LEDs. you have to set that to the number at the end of your strip. Looks like his code had 129 LED when the full strip has 144 LEDs. Just change the line #define NUM_LEDS 129 to 144 and you should be all set.
Awesome build man! I loved it. And I was thinking that for the sounds you could use a cheap electronic lightsaber toy, didn't you think about it?
Thanks! And yea, I definitely thought about it. I actually bought a cheap one, took it apart, and everything. I didn't end up using it mainly because it was already super crammed to get everything in the hilt, and I would have had to re-solder and re-arrange to figure out how to fit it. Since the sound wasn't that great (power on/off, but no real motion effects), I decided it wasn't worth the hassle. I have it in mind to figure out a dark saber at some point, with all the bells and whistles....no promises when I'll get to it, but it is definitely on the list :)
Modustrial Maker oh nice! If you finally make that one, I will be there!! Until that moment I'll continue loving the one that you already made :D
Muchos gracias.... there will be plenty of other cool projects too. Lots of LED integration in 2018....
Modustrial Maker okaaay, i'll there too ;D
Love how detailed this video. I’m making my own with some success, but across the Vin pin on the arduino the voltage is around 3.2 as opposed to 5 across the batteries. Any idea why?
Some Arduinos run at 3.2, others at 5v
Nice dude!
Thanks!
Nice work and nice video
Can you tell me how you connect the two cross sabers to the arduino? And what have i to do with the code? I need help
Thanks! If you search on Instructables.com, I have a write-up there on this project with a sketch circuit diagram, and some more details on the code. (I'm modustrial maker there as well.) You'll probably also want to watch some basic tutorials on controlling LEDs with Arduino (with the FastLED library), as a primer for this project.
I am trying to create my own as well, and I would like to make the whole thing rechargable. I have one question? Is it possible to power whole saber with powerbank?
yes
I have been trying to make my own version but I would like to know if you can change the color of the saber and how it would be done
You'll just need to go to the line of code where I make it red (for kylo file) or blue ( in Rey file). And change the color there.
Hey, we got the code to work but we were wondering if we could change the base color? We spent a couple hours looking and couldn't figure it out. Do you know the exact line where to change the color?
Did you ever find this dude?
Sooooo cool!! cheers ^_^
Thanks! May the Fourth be with you! (One day belated :) )
Cool build. Add sound to the next one!
Thanks! Yea, I definitely want to. It is on my build bucket list to make a dark saber, but sorta the opposite end of the budget -- all metal (steel hilt), 3D printed interior holders, task-designed PCB, sound, and something special for the dark saber blade...but can't give away that part yet :)
Sub'd. Can't wait!
You should make a lot of these and sell them you can make a mint
The led strip diagram you have has only 3 wires what should I do if my Led strip has 4 wires what shoul i do with the other wire??00
What kind of LEDs do you have? Neopixel or individually addressable strips? (These would either be apa102 or ws2813 with 4 wires)? Or regular RGB strips? I have a feeling that you have regular RGB strips, and those won't work for this project.

Is there a way to make a black core lightsaber?
I like to make stuff channel did a dark saber
Time to make a Proffieboard
Just ordered one 😀
@@modustrial today I was build a new saber, that awesome, proffie number One
where is the link of the code?
hi hoping u get this request am just playing with arduino's and sabers, have u got any code that doesn't have the party modes on as been trying to change ya code but to no avail, just need lights no sounds at min but no party modes lol,
In the main loop, just delete the case that switches to the party mode, and reduce the count on the button switch loop by 1
ok will have a look thnx so much as am a noob still with coding but everydays a school day
Yea it takes a bit of trial and error, and a bit of frustration usually too. I'm not that experienced either. Just keep at it and you'll get it.
I have uploaded the code and soldered everything as it is shown, yet I cannot stop the board cycling through every mode without pressing the button. As soon as i hold the momentary switch in the cycle stops. as soon as i let go it continues cycling through doing a second of each mode. Can anyone please help? Cheers!
You have a high and low signal switched.... Wherever you see the if statement for going to the next mode, if it is 1 then make it 0, or if it is set to 0 now, switch it to 1
@@modustrial perfect! Thank you! Got it all sorted now
Hey modustrial maker! I was trying to build a saber myself and I was curious if you need the chip to use the led’s or if you can just wire it to the switch and the batteries and give up the power up/ power down effects and the “party mode”
You can do that if you use regular RGB LEDs instead of the individually controllable ones. It would definitely simplify this :)
What arduino board did you use?
arduino nano clone from Aliexpress
Kylo Ren doesn't have force choke
ruclips.net/video/FtrRJrgzWQk/видео.html
damn i cant get the code to work :( all it does is fill in with blue in and out over and over again and the button seems to be unresponsive... anyone having the same problem or am i a dumbass XD
Probably just need to flip 1 to 0 (or vice versa) for mode switch signal from you momentary button
Does the code add the sounds
No sounds right now -- I decided to simplify the build by only doing the lights. Sounds require motion sensors to activate them, so it gets very complex, and requires more processing horsepower than an Arduino has (you have to use something like a Teensy). Most environments I will use the saber in are loud (e.g. a Halloween party), so you can't hear the sounds anyway. Instead, I chose to focus on the visual effects for the LED blades. (The cross-guard took some work :) )
The I like to make stuff saber includes sounds, but for it, you have to use a Teensy, which is 10x more expensive than an Arduino.
Modustrial Maker thanks
I can't see the link to the code.
The code for both sabers is on my github: github.com/modustrialmaker
Individual links are

Let me know if you are still having issues with it.
Modustrial Maker Thats awesome thank you. Great Video.
No problem!
Star Wars is dead and Disney killed it.
To each their own. Personally, I LOVED the last jedi. I think time will show it to be a classic; maybe even the best.
I really liked it as well.
Yeah, this comments didn't age well at all...

I dont understand... Where the sound come from?
Where can we look for the schematic of this?
