Jean Rondeau & Thomas Dunford record "Les Baricades Mïstérieuses" by François Couperin

- "We don’t know how to play alone. This is the paradox of the game of music: a cross between extremely precise rules for how to play - how to read this cryptic language we spend our life deciphering, like hieroglyphs - and the magic to which it leads us - its at once organic and dreamlike dimension." Discover Barricades: w.lnk.to/brcsLY
Among the composers present in the program is François Couperin, whose "Les Baricades Mïstérieuses" opens the album. Written for harpsichord in 1717, the piece is composed in rondeau form, emblematic of the selections that follow by composers Robert De Visée, Michel Lambert, Marin Marais, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Jean-Henry D’Anglebert, Antoine Forqueray, and Jean-Philippe Rameau.
Also featuring mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, baritone Marc Mauillon, and Myriam Rignol on viola da gamba.

When Rondeau plays a rondeau
Rondeau go rondeau! 🙃😬
XD
He keeps coming back for more..
Best comment 🤣
Sometimes I feel that my life is chaptered by specific pieces of music. Sometimes I come across pieces like this and feel 'new'. And when I have bad days, something that keeps me going is that there must be pieces like this out there for me to find. And I will feel new again.
Literally me
Love this ❤
❤❤ Similar to me.
The listening that is going on between the two is incredible. The push and pull of tempo and yet still placing the notes together. Bravo!
You found the words I was looking for in your description of the perfect synchrony between these two masters. They are truly tuned into each other! Thank you!
I couldn't agree with you more, it's almost magical how in sync with each other they are. I love music that speaks to the heart, and the way these two perform is truly amazing.
Agree. But where are the underlying voices? It's not only resonance and sonority.
Looks like their souls are fused together... wouldn't that be love? I am mesmerized... sublime!
I was lucky enough to hear them play this live in Paris last year. Absolute magic!
Lucky you. I don't get to concerts any more. Not that it matters when you live in a very small philistine society; the concerts are few and far between and very seldom in Rotorua, which must be our most philistine city.
@@LaraineAnne I totally agree lol. All we get is rugby.
And few things could be more boring, Ross. I grew up a stone's throw from Eden Park but never went there until a friend dragged me. I spent the time watching the seagulls. They were far more interesting.
I adore this performance, the unhurried quality and the taking time to hear the exquisite harmonies. It never ceases to amaze me how modern this piece sounds. It seems everyone is drawn to it, whether they are fans of classical music or not.
Yes another timeless baroque piece. The beauty in the simplicity is what draws people in, I feel, in the same vein as Bach’s Prelude in C.
Precisely. I rushed to figure out what I was listening to because of the quality you describe.
I absolutely Iove this piece! First heard it on guitar a few decades ago. I've heard many versions if it since. For me, this is hands fown the ultimate version. The harpsichord,l begins slowly, then slowly, quietly the theorbo comes in, both rise in volume. Jean decouples the long strings and the theorbo shines through. Finally they both relax to the end. Brilliant. Jean is a superb harpsichordist, but he's also a fabulous arranger.
@@stefan33uk This piece is not simple at all. What I miss are are the underlying voices? It's not only synchrony, resonance and sonority.
I can't tell you how much joy this performance gives me! It is absolutely uncomplicated and makes room for listening. It makes me very happy to watch these performers communicate with each other.
Exquis..!!! BRAVO !!!
I have heard so many versions of this evocative piece and never gets old but richer. In this case the pairing of the harpsichord and sensibility of both virtuoso is enthralling.
I can never understand how Beecham could have likened the harpsichord to the sound of "skeletons copulating". This performance is just uplifting.
@@paulkamill2119 Well, it's a good line. Wrong, outrageous, but funny. Very on brand.
@@paulkamill2119 I think, in Beecham's time there were not real good harpsichords. The modern built instrumens body was too thick and couldn't resonate well.
Wow they could “see” each other’s timing! So in sync
I think Dunford couldn't see much of Rondeau's fingers and Rondeau's body language gave little away of his exact timing. I think Dunford was intently listening. Quite adorable actually.
@@Robert-er5wq yes i put “see” in brackets because I didn’t mean literally see. More like sensing
It's not a mystery - playing music together is like making love; it's better if you've done it before and you get into it with feeling and intuition. You could literally do it in the dark :-)
@@barkebaat You make it sound easy. It's not. Indeed it's extremely rare to have 2 musicians this in sync with each other. This is the type of performance that every musician aims for, often gets close, but rarely achieves.
This piece is not simple at all. What I miss are are the underlying voices. It's not only harmony, synchrony, resonance and sonority.
This must be the supreme example of how two musicians can be in sync with each other. The tempo varies wildly, as it should when exploring all the harmonies, yet every single note is absolutely in time with each other. It's exquisite.
Music teachers should show this to their pupils when they are starting to learn how to play in duets or chamber music or even just in an orchestra. It's all about listening.
The thing is: it's not really about listening
@@argi0774 yes there is eye contact big listening is the most important.
@@AndrewWilsonStooshie You don't detect a change in tempo by listening. Because then you are too late. Do you understand that?
The most important thing is practicing together your own interpretation. And of course the eye contact instead of a conductor.
@@argi0774 At this level of chamber music, there isn’t that much rehearsing, practicing, or discussing an interpretation. Sure there is some, but it is mostly listening to one another. You are not too late if you listen. Performing music is mostly about listening. Eye contact helps for some visual cues, but you can see how they aren’t necessarily looking at one another at all times.
@@kaikobird Of course there is a lot practicing together. And that's the point, not some "listening"
can't.... stop.... listening....
Moi non plus …
Jean Philippe Rameau, and François Couperin, absolutely vital to music, the 2 most important French composers of the 18th century!!! An outstanding piece from Couperin, the chord structure alone is emotional, let alone the counterpoint!!!!! Absolutely charming!!!!! ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
One time when the video vastly enhances one's experience of the music.
We are lucky these two found each other.
Thank You for such a wonderful piece by such wonderful artists! Thank You Warner music for introducing us to such an amazing musical world during these tough times and making it absolutely delightful. Best wishes and may music live forever.
I was sceptical as to whether the harpsichord and theorbo could work together well but this proves me wrong: glad I bought the disc very interesting indeed.
This piece made me want to learn everything about the Harpischord. When I played it on Pianista I was surprised how modern it sounded, granted everything in that game is arranged for the piano. Still Couperin was ahead of his time in a sense.
I feel like they should be dating. Are they dating?
they COULD be in LOVE.. at LEAST with the MUSIC, presumably... or NOT!!!!!!!
Rondeau and Dunford have succeeded in their coup de Couperin! A magnificent performance by true artists!
Exactly so i assume it sounds in heaven. Perfect performance. Thanks so much for adding.
This is just incredible. For some reason i perceive and describe music in terms of taste. This is a sweet and tangy lychee martini on the beach in phuket.
Great sound of harpsichord and lute!!!BRAVO, Jean Rondeau and Thomas Dunford!!!
A truly beautiful rendition. Beauty for beauty’s creating a sense of peace. Well done Jean and Thomas.
Extraordinaire musique extraordinaires musiciens j’adore 😍
Quelle merveilleuse interprétation 👏👏👏. 💫💫💫💫✨✨✨ Splendide.
2 très très grands artistes. 🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️
That is a very fine-sounding harpsichord...beautifully recorded.
Something about the cinematography and their communication that makes this captivating
Best interpretation ever in my opinion
Very fluid and laid back, no rush
Seriously great guys
I cried with no tears while listening to this 💗
Yes, me, too!
Oh, this is so [insert all the superlatives one can think of] beautiful !!!
D'accord! Précisement...
Magnífico, Gracias BENDICIONES.
Tacy Młodzi , a tak doskonale grają muzykę dawną. Czują ją i tak grana brzmi barszo współcześnie. Piękne to wykonanie 🎇
I play this piece and when it flows through your fingers...it's magic, i can play it hundred times but is addictive...thanks Couperin!!! this piece alone shows how deep your soul was!!!
Wonderful as always with Mr.Rondeau!
Beautiful. Just beautiful
Wonderful how each stringed instrument brings out in dialogue more of the pathos than otherwise
Hats off to patient Thomas for staying in sync with lost in space Jean👍
Re: "lost in space"..it is too obvious you have never but "played" with a piano or any other instrument...
wonderful finger legato by Rondeau and a beautiful arrangement for the two instruments!
♡
What an exquisite "arrangement, brings joy to the soul."
Incrediby beautiful. Thanks!
Both of them are in another world...a world full of peace !
Gracias 👏👏👏👏👏💐
One of the most beautiful pieces I've heard in a long, long time. Helped me to go through some difficult times. Thank you.
Divine, and honoured as such, as they had the respect and intelligence to veil The Tabernacle
Showing Jean's hands as he plays really helps me while I practice this piece. Thank you to the cinematographer!
Do you own a harpsichord?
Wonderful! Just like listening to your favorite music box!
When music is interpreted artistcally but just right.
The only real "magic" in this world of ours is the music performed by true masters.
Jean Rondeau has brought so much joy into my life. Thank you for sharing your gift of music with the world 🌎❤❤❤❤And special thanks to Thomas😉
Jean Rondeau is undoubtedly one of the best harpsichord players out there. The energy, passion and delicacy he plays with are very hard to find amongst other interpreters.
These two young masters playing together, what s treat!! Each of them has gratfied me with some of my happiest musical moments. Please give us more...
Divin !
Yes. And that one used to be findable here on RUclips. But no more, it seems. :(
I'll have to get the CD...
Great interpretation by both of them. I think Jean Rondeau should starr for a movie about Fidel Castro by some angles they are identicals!
somebody should write for Castro on the harpsichord!
Brilliant! Many musicians charge through this like an express train passing through a station. Even though the score says "vivement" I don't believe it means fast, or lively, but perhaps...alive, which is just how this interpretation makes me feel. The Wikipédia entry goes so far as to say, "La pièce allie donc une certaine vivacité avec un caractère mélancolique et mystérieux", "vivacité" meaning acuity, rather than speed.
Beautiful collaboration!
Hermoso!!!!
Enjoying the exquisite performance on November 11th, 2022, the day F. Couperin was born. Can't think of a better tribute than your unique performance. Now I agree with the people who believe that with this piece, Couperin created a form of musical illusion, the equivalent of a musical fractal, three centuries before fractal mathematics was actually discovered.
interesting comment. I'll have to think more about this fractal music thing. If you have anything further to say on the matter, say on... I'm all ears :]
Whatever it is, something about this piece keeps me coming back to it for years now. Cheers
les barricades!! Mais bravo Jean et Thomas, j'adore!
1:47 ... the best couplet... it is so mezmerizingly appropriate that his lastname is Rondeau... he was destined to be a harpsichordist
Damn, it is so beautiful!
Merci Bien
this is one of the most breathtaking interpretation of my favorite music of Couperin, I think the most beautiful playing of any piece literally, gentle, heartfelt, unique in the perfect togetherness of two amazing musicians. It goes straight to the heart of the world.
When the spirit is more relevant than the structure...
Lindo, maravilhosa interpretação, bravo 👏👏👏
Well done for listening to each other and synchronising.
This entire album is exquisite. Having the added bonus of being able to watch these two communicate so much just through body language and harmony. Sublime synchronicity.
They look at each other like they're french kissing with their eyes.
Love it
Jean Rondeau for me is the most mature baroque musician about, at least for harpsichord/piano anyways
Agree. I have him to thank for setting the hook and reeling me into the boat of Baroque music... years ago. It's been a fun ride.
there's such a chemistry between these guys, that I start thinking about something else ... :)
Lovely!
Please more like this one.
BRAVO!
wow what a music, what a combination, thanks, I enjoyed so much. Please more.
Stunningly beautiful!
Incredibly passionate!
Fidel Castro playing the clave
😂
Very delicate rendering of a timeless favorite. Thank you 😄
great artist pity of this beard getting like blue beard
Rondeau's style is sexy as fuck. You wish you looked like him.
Quel bonheur! 🌞❤💛💚merci
Just came across this. I haven’t heard a piece that brought me so much joy in such a long time
ce disque est absolument fabuleux! Félicitations!
Divin!
why they stare at each other so intensely it beautiful make smile of me
I love both instruments. Well done.
