  • El Dorado Films, in partnership with Veteran Documentary Corps, presents a Scholar Profile on Professor Refugio Rochin.
Refugio Ismael Richie, born in Colton, California, shares his journey as a Chicano growing up in segregated American communities during the 1940s and 50s. Embracing both his Mexican heritage and Californian identity, Refugio's narrative delves into his personal evolution from understanding his Chicano identity to becoming an economist focused on global issues. His academic path led him to UC Davis, where, spurred by a lack of Chicano representation in the curriculum, he pioneered a Chicano Studies program. Overcoming initial resistance, Refugio's efforts culminated in the establishment of a formal Chicano Studies major, one of the first in the nation, reflecting his commitment to education, economic empowerment and social awareness. Now in his 80s, Refugio continues to inspire by biking, touring the world, and helping others.
