  • The New York Times' "1619 Project" marks 400 years since the first African slaves were brought to the U.S. and explores the continuing impact on the nation today. City College of New York professor Linda Villarosa contributed to that report and explained how enslaved people were physically tortured in the name of science and medicine.

      Personally I have no problem talking about slavery when it comes to history. And 400 years ago, that would be history. However there is to this day a blame for that history put on contemporary people. It is a rather remarkable paradox that it is a race-based blame.

If he ever comes close to blaming the current generation of Japanese for the December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor I will make sure to write a very harsh criticism in the comment section.

      True. The actions of the enslavers constitute very shameful history today. And for a good reason. For instance, imagine the signing of the declaration of independence by brave men who somehow lacked the sense to decipher that a human, except for variation in skin color, was indeed human. Whether their actions were deliberate or by some impaired judgment is difficult to wrap one's head around, noting that these were supposed to be enlightened men. Now fast forward about 400 years. As their descendants, I would be ashamed of such vile history, which was pretty much the hallmark of that generation.
      Additionally, I would decline any occasion to talk about it. I think it is more an issue of shame than it is of pride or hatred, even though pride and hatred play significant roles, albeit in a small demographic.

Also, you falsely assumed that because I dislike and distrust the NYT that I therefore have religious faith in Fox and Breitbart. I don’t. I try to be skeptical about everything I read and watch. As for this 1619 Project - it is a brazen attempt to convince Americans that our country was fundamentally evil in it’s founding, and that we should abandon our values and system of government. The Left needs this to happen so they can replace it with their own values and system - a socialist system. That - is treasonous to it’s core. The NYT is no friend to anyone in America

I believe Trump is a good president, and no better or worse a person than any other politician these days - for the record. As for the internet: sure, people can check the veracity of what they read, but most don’t, and media outlets like the NYT know this and exploit it by spoon feeding people their opinions under the guise of “fact”. As for your teacher: I don’t know where you went to school, but in my schools I learned all about slavery, the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, etc etc - and it was great to learn. But never once was I made to feel guilty, like I was somehow responsible somehow because I was white, or that my country was fundamentally evil because of this. It was just a bad thing that happened, like many things in history, that we should learn to never repeat again in history. As for socialism here in the USA: No, we don’t. Socialism is where the government completely controls the economy and virtually every aspect of life. We have social institutions - which are very flawed - but not socialism.

    Somewhere in the last 40 or 50 years there began a push not for the melting pot concept but for individual cultures to live separately albeit in close proximity to one another. It is multiculturalism and it has come as a fear of the ideals that initiated the Civil Rights Revolution. So now we have a black culture that pursues special considerations and even payments, and a mainstream, mostly white culture that prefers to live in exclusive communities with locked gates. For all the many positives that came because of the Civil Rights Revolution, things like the 1619 Project are symptoms of its failings. The melting pot concept will eventually be the reality. However it will take 500 years, maybe 1000 rather than a generation or two.

    • @teddybruscie
      @teddybruscie 5 лет назад +1

      The melting pot idea is a white creation that does not reflect upon what the civil rights movement was about. It's how white people wanted the civil rights movement to be about.
      A prime example of this was school integration. The black people didn't want to integrate into white schools we wanted the resources to improve our own because we didn't trust white to teach black kids. Still don't. The Supreme court took that and spun it to mean we wanted to integrate and we hardcore focused on integration and 50+ years later black schools still suck and we're still fighting to integrate into white schools.
      The problem is white people don't want to listen.

    • @mikewalters3048
      @mikewalters3048 5 лет назад

      @teddybruscie I grant you that white people are pretty horrible. And yes, the idea that white people wanted to eliminate a cultural separation based on race was a dumb idea for white people to have. The notion that we could all dismiss race and see each other for who we were and not skin color, yes, that sounds pretty nit-witty now that I think about it. But I'm a white guy myself so as you said, we white folks don't listen.

      White people can't because the system of white supremacy is engrained in white culture. Race exists because white supremacy exists. Racism is purely a white creation. So white people have to start doing what you've described. And that's something y'all gotta figure out. I don't know how yall gonna do it. But luck to you.

It has ended in war and riots and protest, than people think oh the issue is finally over, let’s stop talking about it and move on. Only way to get passed the issue of slavery and address the problem it caused and why we still have race relation issues in society and race in our country is talk about it, not hide and flee but talk about it. Only way to heal from this past and current issues that still happen today. Come on people, we need to talk and listen. Not run away and hide or get triggered when the issue comes up. All it does is give people a reason why they can't succeed. There are no big stories about overt racism anymore. So the story becomes white privilege which no one can explain, it just is. If you want to write a book about historical slavery thats great, but quit trying to put it in todays narrative. Just think how bad the Jewish race has been treated over thousands of years. When are you going to publish how all the " Undesirables " were shipped to this country when all the slums in Europe to get rid of them & they were described as Europe's trash. Then there were the indigenous criminal white slaves sent to this country also as the jails in Europe were emptied to get ride of them too as they worked off their jail sentences. Tell ALL THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS COUNTRY 'S BEGINNING.

      There are more slaves today in the rest of the world than people want to believe. It may be time to stop spending 80% of the national dialogue on a discussion of something which happened centuries ago.

    I think the education is much more robust than she suggests. We learned about the horrors of slavery up to then Civil War. We also learned about the reconstruction era, the Jim Crow era, and the Civil Rights Movement. Also, what sort of oppression is there today which she references and says stem from slavery?

  • @mojokuku2745

    Instead of looking back at something you can't change, you should looking at modern slavery. There are currently 21,000,000 to as many as 46,000,000 slaves RIGHT NOW globally. Everyone involved back then are long dead. These people are alive now and need help.

    There's no way they can go forward and build a healthy relationship.
