I first saw Gil in 1972 0n Long Island ,NY at a club called My Father's Place...great show, even brought Gil a drink and he said "thanks youngblood". Made my night.....fast foward to 2002.... Gil incarserated in Queensboro Correctional facility, where I worked as a corrections officer. Many nights of good, real conversation which I will not reveal. 2003, breakout concert at SOB's in Manhattan,NY. a good show. I remember thinking " Gil's back". Such a heavy, bueatiful, smart and kind brother!! Next news....Gil Scot-Heron passed away.....a very, very sad day.....R.I.P.....Gil's music and poems have been with me from a young man to present, a senior citizen.
Hey, Brotha, thank you, for telling your story of Gil Scott Heron. I would have given anything to have met him. This man was so phenomenally brilliant, intelligent, compassionate, and a great musical artist and songwriter. I loved him. Every time I listen to Winter in America I start to cry because I realize not much has changed within his gifted insight. songs. But, I'm always hopeful. God bless you. Shalom from Gidget
We need his wit and talent more than ever now. I often wonder what he would say about the clown show we have today. It's a lot worse than a grade B movie.
+ERIC EPPS I was there...he later also performed at the Marcus Garvey park in Harlem which was extra special because that's where his first album was made there.
Thank you! I first saw Gil in 1973 as a student at Texas Southern University in Houston. Not many people in Texas was aware of this amazing Griot and his amazingly ability to articulate the social issues we faced in the early 70’s. Gil had a profound impact on me and I was a devoted fan until he died! R.I.P. brother Gil!!!

He was smiling and said hiya sweetheart, how you're doin? and I'm like heya Gil, doing alright and I remember his smile and warm human heart, a beautiful heart
who cares about the quality of the video when the music is originally good, pure soul and timeless. Thank's for the post, the show was exactly 11 months before he died. R.I.P master.
Just finished reading Gil Scott-Heron's memoir "The Last Holiday." This is a must read if you really want to know the man Gil. This was one brilliant brother! But you be the judge for yourself. Buy the book and you will have trouble putting it down. I loved his music and his views, but learning how they came to be was most interesting. We lost a brilliant, black mind when he passed away. Peace go with you brother.
The original urban troubadour. Your message is still relevant, your impact still felt, your spirit is still alive, even though your voice is stilled. Rest in peace my brother. 🪘🪘🥁🥁
i was lucky enough to see you once in liverpool, you taught me so much with your poetry/music i loved you man , we will miss you gil, love and peace, max liverpoolxxx
His talents was and still are and will forever remain amazing, legendary, and unique. I love Gil Scott Heron because he had a style and charisma unique to everyone and beyond most, a true musical prodigy and genius. Real talk. Seriously. Thanks Extplay because I really appreciate it and I wish that they made some albums of him live in concert like this because seriously and truthfully it would be great.
THANK YOU for posting. I have loved this man's poetry, music and struggle--his essence since I wondered upon him via 'Brown-eyed Girl.' I've consumed everything he's done between then and now. I had the pleasure of seeing him at Bimbo's in San Francisco in 1985 and I sat front and center so close to him @ the piano that I could see the sweat on his brow. I miss his spirit.
That was beautiful, I was lucky I got to see him many times back in the 70's and he was all that. Thank you for your comment on your meeting a giant. May our brother RIP!!

It breaks my heart that he is gone in body. I know his spirit is always here. I always think about him and pray that he was happy and knew what a genius he was.
i can't believe what i have missed, on that day, i was living like 2 blocks away.. and i have passed by, without even knowing what and who was playing on that day.. i have missed watching performing an absolute voice and songwriting legent america has produced in the 1970, as of 2018 and as i recall it now, i will regret it for the rest of my life and in the deepest of my heart for not having attended the live performance that was played by Heron on that day in nyc central park. ;(
I was at this concert.... unforgettable. As he walked on stage he had to calm the crowd because the kids before was speaking negativity..so he told the crowd don't mind the boy he's still young and dosent understand
