Unexpectedly, It took a full day for us to go up and around the Sigiriya. Yet, the time was not sufficient to see the entire place which is probably the most visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical sites in the island and this precious place is referred as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Because of the significant archaeological importance and attraction, thousands of tourists locally and internationally visit here every year.
The fortress of Sigiriya is contained of residual establishments of a ruined palace which has surrounded by a vaste network of fortifications, enormous gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains.
The surrounding territories of Sigiriya had been inhibited for several thousands of years. In the second half of the 4th Century, King Kashyapa has decided to construct his Royal Residence on the top of this Rock. After the Demise of King Kashyapa, Sigiriya has again become a Buddhist Monastery until the 14th century, until it was abandoned.
The western wall of Sigiriya has almost entirely been covered by frescoes, created during the reign of King Kashyapa. Eighteen Frescoes are survived to this day while other several hundreds of elegant frescoes were destroyed by the means of time.
One of the most significant other features of Sigiriya is its Mirror wall. In the good olden days it was polished so thoroughly that the King could see his reflection in it. The Mirror wall is painted with inscriptions and poems written by the visitors of Sigiriya from time to time.
In fact, Sigiriya is a historical monument where we feel the real depth of our historical pride as a nation. As we were hovering around here leisurely, It was getting dark slightly before we left the place.
