Solid commentary! This is one of my favourite reviews/episodes you've ever done, and got me excited and passionate about an alternate King Kong film inspired by the VFX era of Jurassic Park and Mighty Joe Young in the spirit of The Mummy. Something about that combo of Kate Winslet, Robert DeNiro and Bruce Campbell feel like really compelling versions of Ann, Denham and Driscoll. Nevertheless, the film we got in 2005 has grown on me over the years.
According to Ian Nathan's book on Peter Jackson and the making of The Lord of the Rings, Harvey "Gothmog" Weinstein was furious when PJ pivoted towards King Kong before the rights to LotR were completely secured. A deal was brokered between Universal and Miramax where the latter studio would get international distribution rights to King Kong, with an intended Christmas 1998 release. They were going to be coming in third place, and Universal probably felt very vindicated when Zilla bombed with critics while Mighty Joe Young failed at the box office.

I still can't get over how Peter Jackson asked Universal to return his gift to them after they initially cancelled his Kong remake. Considering how awesome that statue of Kong battling three T. rexes was, I can't really blame him for doing that. Good thing he got the chance to make that fight a reality and it's my favorite scene from the 2005 film.
Great commentary Jack! This video alongside your King Kong video games review were actually the first ever videos I watched on your channel! And I definitely agree with your opinion on the 1996 King Kong film it sounded like it would’ve been a great way to reintroduce King Kong in the 90s cinema though then again if this movie was released we probably wouldn’t of had the lord of the rings trilogy so there’s at least one good thing to come out of this!

Considering Joe Young is the one who is more rightly full ape, Peter Jackson should have addressed his Kong more ape man from the beginning imo. Nor beast nor man that was the original idea, right?
