Well done, Verigan. This brings me back to the fantasy that WoW once was. I was an undergrad when Vanilla WoW came out in November of 2004. I was part of a great guild back then named Obsidian Spur on the Sargeras realm. We raided jointly with another Horde guild named Team eXecute and ran almost all of the 40-man content back in Vanilla with the exception of a few bosses in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj and most of the Naxxramas bosses. My good friend and college roommate at the time was fascinated in the Ashbringer questline, and we would talk about if often. He played a Tauren warrior named Jt, and I played an undead/forsaken priest named Wretchedmist. I remember the Durnholde Keep references to Ashbringer as well. I became guild master of Obsidian Spur during The Burning Crusade. Indeed, he had to wait until Legion to finally wield the weapon. By that time we had transferred Obsidian Spur over to the Thrall realm due to Horde player volume, which is where the guild still resides. The original guild shell still exists on Sargeras, though.
My friend died a few years ago at the age of 37 on 10/29/2020. I just recently stopped playing WoW in June of 2022 due to the ever-increasing tedious nature of running a mythic raiding guild as raid leader and guild master. The mythic end-game raiding content in WoW became so horribly overtuned over the years, becoming less accessible and more demanding in terms of time and energy. It just wasn't worth it. Raiding, as well as the game as a whole, lost the fantasy, exploration, storytelling, and community element. Players nowadays don't value guilds the way they did in the past, and a big part of that problem is changing game designs over many years. I currently have the guild on hiatus. I'm not sure I will return to retail WoW. I might go back to Classic and try that for the first time. I'm happy with my incredible memories of WoW. The best time I ever played was during Vanilla. For those who didn't get that opportunity, I wish you did. I've never experienced anything like it. It truly was a great adventure. The memories are seared in my mind forever, and I relive them through the soundtracks.

MMO's in general back then were experimental takes at "imagine what a virtual world would be like" much more than they were games. Honestly the actual game was secondary in a lot of ways to how much effort they put into just making an online social experience. I don't know when it happened, but we moved away from that to putting all our focus on grindy MMO gameplay, which was never the selling point anyway

Sorry for your loss. Way too young.
It's not only that mythic became overtuned, theres no magic. A raid should have one difficulty, it should have attunement quests that do worldbuilding and make you traverse the world, the first few weeks maybe months the handful of last few bosses should only be available to the top 5% and then get nerfed over the span of months, legendaries shoudl be legenday etc etc etc etc
It felt like a world everybody was in together and retail is just...... personalized instances of the newest boss encounters. I dont know theres just a different feeling from getting ported instantly to a raid, and then get personalized loot and the peace out compared to talking with your guild, walking there together, raging about loot descisions and dkp systems etc etc. Old WoW created stories

There was a quest in TBC that was pretty long from a blacksmith which eventually rewards you with a blue weapon reward, the rumor was that he was originally supposed to be the guy to get to the next step for the Ashbringer. It was such a long quest that made you do several end game dungeons that it wasn't worth the reward and ultimately was either a red herring or they scrapped the original purpose for that content.

I want to say it started with an item that drops off one of the mobs in the dungeons around Tempest Keep. I seriously spent a good hour going through quest rewards on wowhead on the TBC page and couldn't find the quest.

The vast majority did not raid beyond mc because the player base in general was less knowledgeable. It was how you established who was good and who was not. The only real difference between then and classic was that EVERYONE started world buffing and using full consumes, even for MC. World buffs and consumes can get even a lackluster guild to clear BWL, and most bosses become an absolute joke. I never once saw sons on Rag while playing classic or pserver, where my vanilla guild saw sons for the first few months until our dps got better gear (rag was nerfed several times after that, especially his health pool and raid damage). At the time, we only used world buffs when we were trying for a first kill on something like nef after a night of wiping to sort through mechanics and such. It's a shame, since seeing my buffed feral with 14k hp and capped armor was pretty awesome.

At the start of Classic I prayed to the loot gods for Corrupted Ashbringer specifically and nothing else. I formed and amazing guild and played the entire game as its GM, even getting the Scarab Mount. When we got to Naxx, my prayers were answered, not only did we get a Corrupted Ashbringer…we got FIVE of them. The PvP video of four warriors and one paladin all with Ashbringers is still amazing. Two were night elves and we did Arena and once beat a Rogue/Mage/Priest as 3 warriors. I have to imagine seeing one lone human warrior with Ashbringer riding a Scarab then getting jumped by his two night elf warrior guards in stealth was a surreal pvp experience. I felt like a hero unit at the end of the game lmao.

These videos about classic WoW have really resonated with me. I was maybe 5-6 years old when my dad first showed me this incredible world during The Burning Crusade, and I've been so deeply invested in it ever since. I never got to appreciate the original run in 2004 in full, so 2019's re-release of Classic allowed me to experience the next best thing. Your story of trekking to the Scarlet Monastery made me sad that I didn't have memories of "the golden years", as some may call them. Though, after watching a little longer, it occurred to me that I *did* have some tales of my own - like while playing my undead mage and deciding that, on a whim, me and 4 other random people should just go run Deadmines at level 16 (which was a hell of a journey in of itself). I may have pushed the highest level of progression raiding during the vanilla - tbc - wrath re-releases, but those smaller memories are just as important.
Please keep telling stories, no matter what games and worlds they originate from. They evoke emotions that are near impossible to describe.

    2. While it was inconvenient back in those days the trek to the Scarlet Monastery was very worth it to Alliance players. It really wasn't hard to find a group, you just had to be the right level for the wing you wanted to take down since they all varied significantly. Armory and Cathedral were the more popular wings because of the gear.
    3. While it does suck that the progression concerning the Corrupted Ashbringer ends abruptly after the cathedral scene, you do make a very valid point about Blizzard not focusing on it more. Naxxramas only saw about 6-7 months of relevancy before Karazhan became the new black. Raiding then was certainly a lot of trial and error.

After going through all the abandoned quest threads of classic I am surprised you didn’t actually discuss the Legion quest line for the uncorrupted Ashbringer skin that recreated a quest line using all those old theories and threads from Dire Maul, Nat Pagle, Timolains Phylactory, etc. it was an excellent homage to the old theories and would have been a great closer for this video after you had already laid out the origin of all those threads earlier in the video

I wondered if you were cover it. Back in the day there was indeed a blacksmith tucked away on on the edge of terokkar forest in a spot that required flying to reach, but he ultimately had no use if I recall. It was speculated at the time that he would be involved in the BC ashbringer questline that never happened.

Great video, lovely narration. The only thing I would've wished to had see was a short section about all the hoaxes regarding the sword. As someone who was a part of the hunt for the sword back in the day; there were a ton of convincing images, videos and the such from players who were playing 'single player' private servers at the time who could spawn the weapon and doctor footage.

The Ashbringer should have never been in players hands. Some legendary items were completely diminished when you logged in and saw 40+ copies of it running around Dalaran. That might be a little harsh, but it sure as hell shouldn't have been something just handed out as a participation trophy.
Ok, never is a bit harsh, but it should have been exceedingly rare to see.

    your videos are wonderful
there was another incomplete quest that was very promising. the one starting after looting the essence of eranikus in the sunken temple. at one point, Itharius sends you to find a person in a remote corner of winterspring who is supposedly able to help you, but right after this person says something that implies he has a task for you, there's no following quest or anything at all.
I'd love to see a video of this too = ) but I'm sure you already have many ideas

Huh... for some reason it never clicked in my head that the entirety of vanilla happened BEFORE the Ashbringer comic! I always thought the comic was the origin of this whole story, while in fact it was rooted in the game all along, that's awesome

What I've always found interesting about Ashbringer [weapon] in Classic, is the fact that boss which drop it might look quite generic on the first sight, due to nature of fight when you battle against 4 "mobs" at once, not a someONE special.
