My aunt died of Covid in April 2020 in New York City. Watching this I had to donate. I think she would have wanted me to. No one should have to die this way. No family should have to suffer the way families in India do now. I have no job, no money to speak of, but I have a roof over my head and I'm fully vaccinated. I only lost one family member, and it hurts every day. Yet I know that I'm lucky. I hope that the world's people have a strong enough sense of self-preservation to come together and save ourselves.

As a junior doctor in a Sub-Saharan country (Sudan). This is really scary, there is no public awareness, there is no hospital capacity at all. Doctors are being assaulted on a daily basis because they are seen as responsible in the public's eye when there are no beds. And almost no one follows any public safety measures. A third wave didn't even properly start here.
Edit: the point being that doctors are often the first point of contact and when situations get heated violent assaults go up, especially in countries with a mismanaged legal system and poor general education.

It is weird how some countries can do have such extreme up- and downswings in fortune during this pandemic. During the first wave, everyone in Europe was looking at Portugal in envy, as they did a tremendous job of keeping the virus at bay, but come the second wave, they were suddenly the hardest hit country on the continent. I suspect it's going to take decades of research to find out once and for all how this same cycle occurred in quite a few otherwise unrelated countries.

From my experience, most of us were still in what I would call the "February state of mind" in early April. And by most of us I don't just mean individuals, the authorities, institutions etc were making it mandatory to attend all the events physically. Even now there are certain institutions which want their students to come back on campus and it's, for the lack of a better term, Absolutely fuckin the mind of those students. There are still a lot of people who are in denial of the dangers of Covid and have a bit of this superiority complex that Covid can't do much damage to Indians for some reason. Add to that the Rich fleeing the Country after actively promoting the events of mass gathering and well, you get what we have now. To all the Indians here rn, when we say we have to get through this together, WE MEAN IT. IN ALL SENSE AND MEANING OF THE WORD "TOGETHER".🙏

We had come out of the lockdown around August of 2020, and by October nearly everything had opened up - gyms, malls, markets, bars, restaurants, hotels etc. Everything except schools, of course. The tourism industry was coming back to life as well. We seemed to be back on track.

Here are subtitles for the interview with Dr. Pushka 19:44 to 25:20
They are rought, because I wanted to publish them ASAP and I'm not a native english speaker myself.
But I hope they will help to convey the message.
    19:44
    Rohir:
What is the situation like at the moment?
    19:47
    Dr. Pushka:
    It's hell.
    19:48
    And that's an understatement.
Because there are no beds available, anywhere.
?you know? at least my city of Nagpur is very well known it's hospitals and medical care in general.
But there are no beds here.
People are dying here because they are not getting ?beds/meds?.
They are not getting the treatment they need.
    20:15
You know as a doctor it's a very sad situation to see because and you feel so helpless.
And it's very disheartening. ????? so to say
To say that it's hell outthere is an understatement.
And that's the best I can, you know, describe it.
    20:32
    Rohir:
Can you describe a typical day for you at the moment? What does a shift look like?
    20:38
    Dr. Pushka:
So basically we have twelve-hour shifts.
    20:42
Day is twelve-hour shift and two six-hour shifts.
    20:44
That's our normal ?covid? rotation, that happens.
    20:48
    We lack manpower.
    20:50
So sometimes it happens, that the ones who are at night have to continue in the morning shift also.
    20:59
So basically that twelve-hour duration gets ?stretched? by six more hours.
    21:04
    Rohir:
And you are doing the whole shift in full PPE (Personal protective equipment) I assume.
    - ( (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, gloves, face shields, goggles, facemasks and/or respirators or other equipment designed to protect the wearer from injury or the spread of infection or illness.)
    21:09
    Dr. Pushka:
Not the full PPE, not the eighteen hours but most of it.
    21:14
You know, like around six to eight hours, give or take.
    21:19
    Rohir:
    Wow.
    21:20
    Dr. Pushka:
    We do that in PPE.
    21:21
    Dr. Pushka:
There is a lot of people ????? but that's minor thing.
    21:25
    Rohir:
Are there more than one patient per bed at the moment?
    21:28
    Dr. Pushka:
In the casualty (emergency department) yes.
    21:31
In the wards at least we manage to have one bed per patient.
    21:35
But where the triage (where patients are first diagnosed) get place, the casualty area, you have four patients per bed.
    21:43
And I just, you know, I just saw a patient who had to spend four days in casualty.
    21:51
    Because there were no beds.
    21:53
Four days in casualty, casualty area, then on the fifth day he got a bed.
    22:00
But by then, his situation became so bad, that the next day of getting the bed he passed away.
    22:07
And the guy was below fourty years of age.
    22:11
The thing is that we had time.
    22:14
Our governments had time. From the local government, to state government, to central government.
    22:20
We had time to prepare, but we didn't prepare that much.
    22:25
??? treatment of doctors, you know, we are not prepared as good.
    22:31
As we have heard in other countries, basically.
    22:35
So the treatment of doctors is very bad. So to say.
    22:42
    Rohir:
Have you seen a lot of patients dying?
    22:44
    Dr. Pushka:
    Yes actually.
    22:46
Currently, you know I just said, I'm working in ??forensic?? medicine.
    22:50
So basically I have to go sometimes to the mortuary.
( place used for the storage of human corpses awaiting identification or removal for autopsy or respectful burial )
    22:56
So, in mortuary I ???? put things in context.
    23:01
Last week, there was one particular day, ?? I belive ??? it was ??? friday.
    23:06
But ?? pre (before) ?? COVID record for most bodies ???? post mortem ??? most bodies being dispatched to ????
    23:18
It was 25. And that was the most.
    23:20
    Last week it was 140.
    23:22
    Rohir:
    My goodness.
    23:24
    Dr. Pushka:
    Yes.
    23:26
And on an average we are dispatching around 75 bodies
    23:31
    That's average.
    23:32
    Rohir:
What do you think is the main reason why it's so bad in India?
    23:40
Afterall it was doing quiet well before and the case numbers were low.
    23:44
Why do you think it has changed that much?
    23:45
    Dr. Pushka:
Well, there are many factors I would say.
    23:51
But I, you must be meaning about Kumbh Mela (Kumbha Mela)
    23:57
So basically what happend is, I'm in Nagpur so it means Kumbh Mela did not happen yet in my region.
    24:05
But where it's happening social distancing is not properly enforced.
    24:12
When they say that social distancing will be followed and everything will be done.
    24:16
But that hasn't been done at all.
    24:20
And when there were cases increasing the government did not enforce it, to contain it. ???????
    24:32
And then there were other big things that were allowed to happen.
    24:37
Like the election rallies in ??some city?? you know.
    24:41
So there are many things like that, that contributed to this.
    24:45
Many ??? in other parts of India where basdically the Kumbha is right now in the process.
    24:53
You can say that the cases are being under reported.
    24:59
And deaths are being under reported.
    25:03
Basically people are ??? covering it up.
    25:08
And that leads to people being in a false sense of security.
    25:16
So because of that it's increasing more right now.

Hey mate. It's the thought that counts. :D Thank you for the kind gesture.
You know I am skeptical about whether the money that so many people are donating would ever reach those who need it........ I remember when I was in school in 2009 there was a cyclone which hit WB, India. Specifically the Sundarbans region. 50000 people became homeless. We heard that a lot of people from foreign countries donated huge sums of money. When I entered college in 2015 I went for an excavation in that area. You won't believe me even in 2015 most of the people were homeless in that region living in temporary settlements. When I and some of our friends questioned the nearby police station they told us to "f**k off". Later after returning to Calcutta I realized after some research that those money never reached the needy.
Who is responsible? In the end it is the people who are responsible. People don't have healthcare and education as priority. Thus they elect leaders who also don't have that as a priority. It is vicious circle.
And you will see legions of arrogant Indians bashing every other country on earth day & night.

No country, poor or rich, can handle such a growth.
The challenge for all countries in the world is to slow the spread by social distancing, wearing masks, washing your hands, vaccinating.
It is up to leadership to understand this, explain it to their citizens, and make sure to get appropriate measures in place.

It is very distressing to see the situation in India, especially here in Brazil. In the state of Manaus there was a lack of oxygen for a week at the worst moment of the second wave, the images on our news were terrifying, people dying without any support. Deaths here have stopped rising, are still very high, around 3000 a day, but worse than many registered deaths is the inability to even register deaths, which apparently is the situation in India. Just like for opening schools for students during a COVID-normal (obv not like how India is atm) rather than an absolute COVID-zero, there's weight in the argument of opening up places of worship. What some people on the other side of the argument don't understand/realize is the importance of places of worship to the faith of a religious person.
Not being able to attend places of worship for months on end has massive social implications for those less advantaged or those struggling to find meaning/hope. Like for studentsin schools, many underestimate the value of what basic interaction with people of similar background has to an individual's wellbeing. Compassion is subjective, a person either has it or he doesn't. You don't make a person feel compassion by telling him he should.
But with such cold, rational reasons, you may convince even selfish people to help out by highlighting how helping serves their personal interests too.

@@psi9899 likely because we don’t have enough vaccines to supply our own people as of yet. I’m disabled, a vulnerable person supposedly in the second group... nothing.
Our federal government has completely bollocksed up vaccine delivery. The only reason we have such low cases is due to (most) state governments really stepping up in regards to lockdowns and closing borders (especially Queensland and Western Australia). If it were left up to the federal government... well, it’s run by a man who thought the middle of the massive bushfire crisis was a great time to jet off to Hawaii for a vacation.
Unfortunately, vaccine buying, manufacturing, and distribution are the province of our federal government. It’s not going well. But that is why Australia isn’t giving out any vaccines to other countries. We don’t have the vaccines to give to our own citizens- none of my care workers (who actually work in aged care as well as disability care) have been vaccinated. It’s a shambles. But thankfully, it’s not as urgent a problem as it would be, due to the states’ management of the virus. They are (for the most part) listening to scientists, and announce lockdowns pretty quickly when necessary.

@@psi9899 and in regard to patents for vaccines and medications generally- don’t forget that our government is both extremely conservative and neoliberal. The fact that people still vote for them really shows the lack of political education as well as the immense political apathy in Australia. It’s a huge problem.
