  • I review my new JBL PRX One column PA system. I try to cover what other reviews didn't tell me, is it loud enough to use with a band and how does it sound on acoustic guitar! ‪@jbl‬

    Great review. I was just wondering you said obviously you can’t plug everything in to it. I am looking for a portable PA that you can plug guitar, vocals, backing track AND drums. For small gigs would you not think it could handle the drums? Thanks once again for your great review.

      @iamtjwalker  9 месяцев назад

      Glad you like the video! Do you mean live acoustic drums or electronic drums? For gigs where you need the drums mic'd up then this is definitely not loud enough. It's loud for a column PA in comparison to others, but I've found it's running on the limit even for playing music from an ipad in a crowded noisy bar. It works for vocals only over a band in a medium/large bar too.....but I think if you wanted to put everything through it you will struggle. You can run another speaker from the mix output.....that's what I think I'm going to do in future if it's running near the limit as the features and the sound quality are fantastic.

    but.... I wonder if with 2 of this is enough to sound the whole band....e-drum, quad cortex, keyboard and bass?

    Hi great review the live footage stuff make a huge difference. A question if I may, I am setting up a semi acoustic trio two acoustic guitars and three mics, the electric I'll amp separately. it will be pub gigs and beer garden type venues. Do you think it will do the job? The guy in the local shop is steering me toward the Yamaha, but it doesn't have enough inputs, so I'd have to add a small mixer which I wouldn't mind avoiding. Thanks for your time.

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  3 месяца назад +1

      I think the PRX is the loudest one of the column PAs available (in terms of spl). I've used it as a vocal PA with my 3 piece band (guitar/bass/drums) in pubs and it is just about loud enough. I've used it with my acoustic guitar solo and it's always been loud enough. It really depends on the amount of ambient noise!! I think it's probably a better bet than the Yamaha but I'm not certain that either would be loud enough in all situations. I have run it with another speaker (a Mackie 350) slaved out of the mix out which has really helped and I think would be loud enough in most situations. It does sound great though and I'm still really pleased with it!

    thanks very much for your video. very useful, though the one thing that is bothering me - the weight and dimensions of the base unit - you didn't mention.
    I am 66 and a bit weak and I will have to carry all this upstairs after every gig, so the weight is particularly worrying for me. Also my storage area is quite small so I need to know the dimensions. I can't believe how difficult this is to find out! everywhere the total weight and dimensions of the box but nowhere what I actually need to know. Can you help me? Thanks in anticipation.

I haven't used it with tracks but the sound is really good so I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's also the loudest out of all the ones you've listed.

      I hadn't seen this one when I was looking at the options, I only saw the ones without a mixer. I think I could have gone for this one, it's not quite as loud, and the JBL quotes a 2000 watt amp (not that it means much in itself) but it's 130 rather than 128dB SPL. It has a couple of features I wish the JBL had actually ie: aux sends on the channels and a footswitch. Part of the reason I went for a JBL, is the guy who mends my amps said that all of these new PAs are almost impossible to mend as they're build on tiny PCBs. He said the best out of the bad lot are the JBLs!! Saying that, I don't know if he's ever seen an RCF....if he hasn't that's a good sign that one hasn't broken!! The JBL looks a bit neater with the columns mounting directly and it has a 7 year warranty....I'm just trying to justify the extra £500 I spent now! The JBL does sound fantastic though....I'm sure the RCF does too though!!

    Fyi: Spl 3 db's is double power. 2-3 db change is just noticeable to the human ear. 10 db's is double volume. Starting a video with saying one db is double volume is a terrible way to start things.
    This jbl prx one has a HUGE problem. The lower 4 speakers are tuned to a mid high range. Not high only. If you are below the sweetspot of this speaker it becomes extremely muddy and highs are almost gone. If you have even a short stage and people are sitting they are only going to hear lows and mids. Even at a distance. It's actually a terrible issue. I had to return mine. Even showed several people the issue at guitar center and they were shocked because they agreed with me. The issue is absolutely a huge design flaw. A guitarist I work with wanted to buy one too. I told him to listen to one, but squat down a little bit and see how the sound changes. He did and messaged me how bad it sounded when he did this. He then bought the ev 50m instead.
    I'm currently using the jbl eon one mk2 and love it. But I wish I had more power sometimes. But the battery is phenomenal! And the speakers are at an angle which the prx on should have done! It clears up the sound on the lower side of the speaker. Why would they not do this with the more expensive speaker???
    Moral of the story, beware!

    • @iamtjwalker
      @iamtjwalker  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the info on the SPL dBs, I tried to find more info but it all got a bit technical for me….I think I said I wasn't sure!! I've had the PRX One over a month now and used it on around 10 gigs, both with a band and solo acoustic guitar/vocal….and nearly every time I've used it I've been approached by someone from the audience and told how good the sound is! I've had more unsolicited compliments on the sound in the last month than in the last 30 years using other PA systems. I also think I get the best acoustic guitar sound I've ever achieved using it….and I've played through many different PAs from small pubs through medium size venues to arenas.
      The issue you describe I haven't noticed as a problem, but I thought that was how a line-array worked. This article/review describes it much better than I can www.soundtech.co.uk/musicians-blog/jbl-prx-one-vs-traditional-pa-comparison I'm sure your EON sounds great, JBL gear is always good, but 118dB max SPL is the same as the Mackie column system I've used, and even in the smallest pub I was asked to turn up whilst playing solo when the PA was already clipping….it just isn't loud enough for my purposes. The PRX One on the other hand is even loud enough to use as a vocal PA with a band.
      The EV system your friend bought looks good, it's 127dB max SPL….does that mean it's half the power of the PRX One at 130dB? It's also 30% (£500 in the UK) more expensive.

      @iamtjwalker  Год назад

      I've only used the PRX One.....and now having used it for over a month and 10 gigs or so, I love it....I'm really pleased I bought it. It's loud enough to use as a vocal PA with my band....I loaded in my guitar gear (2 guitars, Amp, Pedal Board) plus the PA with mic stand and guitar stand in 2 loads from the car!! So it wouldn't be fair to comment on the Yamaha not having used it....but on the plus side it's 2/3 of the price, has a very nice cover....but it's 5dB SPL quieter which I think makes it too quiet for a band situation if that's a consideration, also has 1 less input. On a more general note....and I haven't heard the Stagepas MKii....I've always preferred the sound of JBL PA gear to Yamaha Stagepas systems.....I've played through and heard people using the other StagePas PAs and I've not been particularly impressed.....but this one might be good....I'd see if you can find somewhere to try them both!!

    • @MrCheswickMusic
      @MrCheswickMusic Год назад

      @@iamtjwalker The PRX one was the first line array that caught my eye due to the number of inputs, I noticed that most of the other line array's out there only had 2/3 inputs, which I thought was ridiculous, as imagine if a guest guitarists vocalist wanted to jump up for a song with me, I'd be like "Well, I can plug your guit in, but you can't sing I'm afraid as there's only 3 inputs ha ha
      That's all I wanted really, inputs & power, I'm not too bothered about anything else like effects etc as I've already got my own setup that I'm happy with so I'll probably never use them
      I really like the PRX one, but I might have to wait and see if the price drops a bit, that's the only real factor why I'm considering the Yamaha to be honest, but then I'm a firm believer in "You pay for what you get" especially with music gear, Ooooh decisions decisions hey? Ha ha

Even when you're using amps, you're still hearing a "mix" of the live band that probably has your own instrument louder in the "mix" than you would have FOH. In my monitor I would have my vocal much louder than it would be in the main mix....and the guitar slightly louder.....this is just so I can hear more detail in what I'm doing....but still in context of the other musicians.
