Oh, the misery of being a parent to a demanding teenager! To me, that talon grab might have earned a wingslap. You don't bite the hand that feeds you, even if it didn't bring food this time. But Shadow handled it like a pro, true stoic that he is. Spirit has got to learn that things won't always go his/her way. Great teaching moment, thanks for sharing it with us, Cali.

Had it been anything other than Spirit and Jackie trying to bite him they wouldn't even be able to be close enough to even breathe on Shadow's talon.
Shadow puts up with a lot of whining in the nest...one reason why he is a good partner and father.

@@73mycroft I think Spirit hasn’t eaten for a while and is used to being fed every couple of hours. From my understanding, eagle parents begin doing less and less for the eaglet and sometimes taunt them. Spirit will have to become fierce and resilient to protect, feed, and nurture his/her future family as J&S has done.

Spirit not only whined and grab Shadows talon, but also tried to take bite out of Shadow at 2:50. Shadow just moves away, not phased by Spirits little tantrum.
Spirit didn't attempt to take a bite...just being dramatic with the open mouth lunges. Had spirit tried to take a bite she would have made actually connection, and then we'd have seen a reaction.
But how cute, it makes insistence with Mom as all children do. Little Eagle you are really a sweetness!! 💖🐥💕😘

Just watched a fledged juvie steal the fish out of dad's claws just as he was descending into the nest. He flew away with it and his sibling followed. They are always stealing food from each other at this age, so it seems. These are some calm parents with all that squeeing going on. 😂

I just Love Shadow and the WHOLE family. Never knew bald eagles were like this. Prior to this I never watched anything about birds and just in general in life I like blue jays and Cardinals or also the cool colorful birds you will see in Florida etc but after watching this channel for some time now I have really a liking to Bald eagles specifically& this family only LOL. I don't watch any of the other channels. I never thought that I would be fond of birds not even just one type like this. It's just amazing to see how the world works beyond just humans. So beautiful and just think how nice it must be to be a bald eagle! They don't have to deal with the everyday things that humans have to deal with UNLESS it's a human forcing our ways on to them which is really unfortunate because animals should just be able to be animals. It's just so beautiful to watch how natural they are in the world and I envy them, their beauty, their attitude, kindness.. everything really !
I wish that I had been watching back then. Sprite is a perfect name. I hope that she still has that attitude and is doing well.

It is hilarious when a fledgling still demands food in that 'I am starving' way in that I need it NOW way. Spirit has grown so much. Shadow is almost like Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird ( and yes it seems like I used that for effect but I truly did not}, He is so measured and patient so his child will grow up strong and independent. Love them all.
I've literally had this same experience when I worked in daycare. Just set them on a bench to cry and colored at the table until they were done.
Shadow is just thinking "How long can you go for? Cause I can stare at these vistas alllll day"
It‘s fascinating that Shadow didn‘t slap Spirit after the talon grab, I am only imagining if it happened to Shadow with just another bird/animal, the other animal would certainly become food. I know many animals especially eagles are highly intelligent, but Jackie and Shadow many times just melt my heart.

As I learned last night, this behavior is called mantling and every young eagle goes through it and it prepares this predator for life as an adult. Eagles don't view behavior and discipline the same way humans do.

What I have noticed day after day that Spirit is protecting that egg The same way Simba protected cookie after she passed and wouldn’t let shadow and Jackie near cookie and would throw temper tantrum‘s when they got close. That was some demanding stuff out of Spirit. On today the 29th spirit was that way again with both parents when they got close. Spirit Ran back and sat on the egg. Interesting

I don't know about everybody else, but I find Spirit's attitude very disturbing...I have been watching simultaneously another nest (Florida) and I have never witnessed aggressive attitude towards the parents like this. He has had this attitude since day one (almost). I find the parents very patient.
