  • I failed due to an old injury, but the story of my attempt and fail was pretty cool, so I hope you enjoy this cycling documentary about my cycling everesting fail.
    This is my attempt at a cycling documentary format. It took me a while to make so I hope the story comes across cool.
    the main climb starts at 7:23

    If it makes you feel any better, Everest is only 11,560 feet in elevation gain from Base Camp to Summit. So, technically, you climbed Everest...

  • @josephxkendrick

    Short reps is definitely the way. I've completed it with 97 reps and also with 238 reps (on a fixed gear). I once attempted it on a climb which would have been 5 reps but only ended up 'half-Everesting' before quitting... Re-attempt when it's warmer and the nights are shorter with higher reps. Easy money!

    It was NOT embarrassing at all. It probably would have been embarrasing to keep pedalling like a lunatic and damage your knee and have to fix your knee with surgery. It was really brave to stop. You have the cardiovascular fitness & the moral to reach the everest limit for sure! With some good advice and help of a PT and/or exercise physiologist you will succeed next time.

    Good honest attempt, your prep sounds pretty good with the exception of not having your gloves and prep for the long descent. I like that you put the vlog up showing that effort and preparation are important, even when the result isn't what you hoped for; good lesson for everyone! Also that you talked about what might have worked better (series of shorter climbs, repeated many times rather than a larger climb repeated fewer times).
    As always, good vlog, rest and continue therapy - it's the off season!

    Don't beat yourself over it. By the looks and sounds of it, it just wasn't meant to be. Just like all your vids, this one is again an inspirational one.
    Keep it up, and remember, you inspire lots of people with your vids, because everything you do seems real and relatable. We all fell lots of times before we were fully able to walk properly. So don't think there's a direct path to things, we fail in order to learn..

    As somebody that has now had 3 knee surgeries on my right knee and dislocated my knee cap easily 2 dozen times, I legit feel your pain. I played every sport growing up, and now at 31 years old, cycling has luckily saved my sports "career". Thank God cycling has built my leg up stronger than ever and I fortunately don't get any pain whatsoever on the bike (granted I'm not climbing 11,000 ft. Not even 3,000 ft). You're the man and hope you can realize just how much your content inspires people to do better, to push themselves harder, and to just do EPIC SHIT!!

      Entertaining. Loved you energy.As a PT and avid cyclist looking at doing an Everesting attempt soon, I would say get your knee looked at by an orthopedist. If the knee is unstable (in any direction, or multiple)it can be surgically fixed, likely an ACL-yes major surgery but can get back to cycling in a few weeks), and get beyond not then having to dance around and baby it along. What you describe is when the quads are contracting ans stabilizing on the downstroke it is stable but then it loosely slips (we call it subluxation vs a dislocation when they are all the way apart. Semantics as a subluxation is a partial dislocation). It wont get better and you are young now and can rehab well. A loose joint can lead to arthritis later whereby all you can do is get a joint replacement and go to pool classes with the gray haired grannies or ride a spin bike for 20mins with no resistance. Not to be condescending at all, I just know you can get it fixed. All the biomechanics, core stuff by your other PT is great and helpful but just putting lipstick on a pig. Prettier but still a pig. Lets put Chow,Good luckBarryBTW video documentary from this, surgery, post op rehab process, back on a bike and then everesting as the pinnacle. Now that's a multi chapter book!!!

    if a challenge were a nailed on cert, then it wouldn't be much of a challenge. it's only the genuine risk of failure that makes eventual success feel like a real accomplishment. I felt for you and recognised that internal wrestle between your common sense and your ego. made for a great video in the end, probably more inspirational than an easy looking completion would have been. keep it up dude

    First, in England we have a word for days when it's 63F and drizzly. We call it "summer". ;-)
    Second, even if I were on your support crew, I'd much rather have you stop early to save a dodgy knee than see you try to push through. Blowing your knee permanently would be a MUCH bigger fail than not finishing.
    All things considered, another great video.

    Mate, three of us just drove back from our Everesting attempt - it was a 336m ascent, 5.4km distance, we started at 3am - which averaged 7-10 degrees but with one 800m section known as 'the wall' goes from 14 to 21 degrees - a rural road with bugger all traffic and nice country side - well we all failed - 15 reps, 21 reps and 24 reps - when the target was 27 ! So all of us fatigued cos the day was 26 to 31 degrees and the night seemed hotter (?) basically we fried ourselves - we know now what it's like to 'bonk' - it was ugly - mentally and physically we failed - in the end we weren't up to the task - devastated !!!! We have unfinished business !

    Hey man, Thanks for sharing this story, and I can relate to it very well, as I myself have pretty much the same story as what you just told, but my knee issue was different. But its very good that you stopped, as you said there is way more damage you can do in carrying on, that was my issue also. I tried and didn't succeed on two separate occasions. But I just want to say to you, that you never failed at all, and I'm not too keen on you saying that :) these were lessons and training for you to know how to get it right, in how to succeed. You should be proud, and I am sure that we will both succeed in doing so. I could really relate to this, and have no doubt you'll do it, just keep trying, then your not failing. Thanks, Marc

    Compact and 11-32 is what I have and can climb in European Alps with it no problem. The GCN show featured the pro peloton set up during TDF mountain stages. They were all on the same set up replacing their usual dura ace for ultegra.

    Dude. Feel for you on that. I had to bail on an Everest attempt this year. Started at 02:30 at it was freezing. I didn't warm up till gone 10:00. The descents just become unbearable. I ended up bailing after 221km and 5500m. Going to hit it again next summer and finish it.
    You'll get it done next time around. Looking forward to seeing the Everest completed video!

    There was no 'Fail' - you attempted to 'Everest'. You made the attempt. You'll no doubt make another attempt. The only Fail is to give up on something you want. Try and Try again is how to succeed. The knee! I'm so on that page - first Gran Fondo (Whistler, Canada), knee packs up at 80 km (still 40 k uphill to go). a motorbike medic correctly diagnosed inflamation pulling my kee out of line. he pulled it back into line with a bandage and I was able to ride on slowly.
    Next year, after taking all sorts of precautions (different pedals, physio, training, different bike), I'm on the same km of the ride and bingo - knee packs up! Just then a guy limps over to me and says "Gosh my knee is killing me, got any meds?"
    I spilled out Ibuprofen, knee bandages, sports tape - he came to the right place - we limped on. But what you said seems right - riding all uphill and way different from your normal profile, you uncover weaknesses or misalignments. Change the ride, change the outcome! Thanks for sharing The Everest 'Attempt!' Good luck on the next one!

    Dude, this is so similar to my story. Dreamed and planned of doing the same challenge. A few hours in and boom! Knee pain from a past injury & surgery (MPFL, a reconstructed ligament that keeps the knee cap in place).
    It's been a week plus since I have been on my bike and descending my stairs at home have become a nightmare.
    Rather then planning the details of the Everest challenge, I've decided to spend my time with physio and cross training. Let's strengthen our knees and try agin in the new year.

    So I watched an episode where you did a Ironman at home . I noticed your running style is like mine . We don’t have great mechanics for running . Now I watched this and i had the same problem with right knee. I ended up going to physical therapy . My knee gets super sore and one time I even had to ride home 20 miles with just my left leg as I couldn’t ever turn the pedal with bad knee. Physical therapist tells me I have developed cycling muscles but my core was weak and my glutes were super weak. That’s probably why I can’t sprint worth a hoot. Anyway physical therapy has helped a lot. I feel better to know I’m not the only one and I’m glad you told the story . It could help others having knee issues . Thanks 🙏

    Man, thanks for documenting this effort. I've been lurking in the bushes contemplating this challenge yet wanting a good example of what to expect. Rest up and go at it another day. As for the garmin fail, I rented a bike to climb Alpe d'huez this summer. Garmin recorded the decent but not the climb. My wife followed me up so she and I know I did it but I feel like garmin robbed me of something.

    Hi Tyler, I very much hope that you could recover / heal your knee problems completely. The climb was anyway already crazy enough. One thing: I very often wonder about "modern" cycling clothes and clothing habits. I started cycling 35 years ago, many years on amateur level. What we did is check temperatures before each training ride and optimize the personal "dress code" for each temperature range (I am from central Europe and not from CA). After a bit of trial and error you never ever again are clothed to cold or too hot. Oh and regarding the descends: Do you know the stone old trick to put newspapers under your jersey for descend? They are so comfortable and cheap, they dry your sweat, keep wind off 100%, are totally light weight and disposable.

    • @jimmycrackedcorn226
      @jimmycrackedcorn226 7 лет назад +7

      Those were my thoughts. It seemed too big a chainring for an everesting attempt. 50-34 would've maybe served him better.

    • @izmael_kneafcy
      @izmael_kneafcy 7 лет назад +7

      When you consider all you are doing is going up hill the smaller the chainrings the better right? In your easiest gear on a 36/28 you have no where else to go.. Producing high amounts of torque and fatigue, standing a lot. I would definitely take the advice of using mountain bike cranks and ride mid cassette.

    • @nicolemitsi
      @nicolemitsi 7 лет назад +11

      I did it with a 50-34 and a 40 cassette on the rear. I have a bad knee injury from past martial arts training, but this gearing allowed me to everest a 10% climb without knee pain. Less grinding = less torque and fatigue and much nicer for the knee joints. I would definitely recommend mountain cranks for anything 10% gradient or more.

    • @willwhite1987
      @willwhite1987 7 лет назад +9

      who cares about the chainrings... we all have different abilities. The only thing for such an effort is to be able to hold 90RPM in zone 2 in all sections of the ride. If you can do it in a 36/28 ratio, then you won't have any more problems than with a 54/32. Just saying.

    • @kitten-inside
      @kitten-inside 7 лет назад +3

      Even "only" 50/34 means a maximum of 50x11, so about 50 kph (!) at 90 cadence. What use is that outside of descents in professional races? Dude went even higher.

    And a little advice I know you have probably heard it all but when I ride I do a kinesiology tape wrap on my right knee to help support it. It gives it that flexibility without the stiffness of a knee brace.

    Failure makes us stronger, we learn from it, it is necessary, it expose the weaknesses we must work on. Cool vid, looking forward the success story.

    tbh, for the story, it really doesnt matter if you succeed or not. i would go even a step further and say, a fail story is much more entertaining than if you just succeed without any struggle... really enjoyed the documentary

    Hey VC even though you failed that was an awesome attempt! Congratulations for numbers you've achieved and all the effort put in. I just recently followed you (last month I think) are your videos are dope!!!
    Could you share more about your injury? I'm surprised too much cycling can mess up your biomechanics.
    I'm trying to supplement my cycling with some work in the gym. Working on my flexibility, shoulders, chest, back, core and my legs of course. It's just short workouts cause I have limited time in the day, 50% working out and 50% stretching (cause I need to focus on flexibility and recovery) plus the rides.
    Hope you could share with us what you learned during rehab so we could avoid what happened as well. :)

    How's your seat height?Sounds like it's too high if you feel a dislocation on the resting part of the pedal stroke.
    Get a proper bike fit if your having any sort of doubt even if it's not a cycling specific injury.

    I too failed at everesting. I live and train in the mountains. Didn't train very hard because I was getting out of a successful season of racing. My hubris wrecked me. Climb was 11% for 12 miles and ended up stopping me cold at the very end. Funny, you train so hard and then such a low intensity thing wrecks you.

    Hey man, how's the knee? What kinds of things have you done to try to keep this from happening again? I'm on my second knee injury in the last year. I'm off the bike for now and it sucks. I start physical therapy this week. Trying to be optimistic but injuries are the worst.

    hey tyler, best wishes brother. Im rooting for you for the summer time to have a go at it again then. Heal up and fight the climb another day. Everesting is on my bucket list as well, so I really am rooting for you. Keep up the great vlogs man. From fellow vegan, vlogger and road cyclist. Aloha & all the best. Regards - Bernard

    I had this. The pain of tendons screaming is unbearable, I know it well and have tons of sympathy for you. I now wear the knee brace chosen by my physio (and reviewed approvingly by orthopedic surgeon) when cycling and do a lot of yoga and pilates to maintain my core and stabiliser muscles. And I have now completed an Everesting! You said in the video you'd go again - did that happen?

    Found out I have bursitis in my right knee. Attempted a century.80 some miles in my knee flared hard and it was the beginning of the end for that effort. It terrifies me now. I'm out 6-8 weeks when it flairs up. bummer for you...

    Not to knock anyone, but I just don't get the everesting thing.... unless you're a UCI pro racing in the TDF, it's just wearing your body down big time and potentially causing serious injury (for people like me with an old knee injury this is an important consideration). For climbing steep hills I've got an 11/32 cassette and 50/34 (what a total ectomorph with chicken legs like me needs to use).
    Anyway, thanks for the video, appreciate the honest commentary etc.

    Wow, did you dislocate your knee as your injury. Or 'only' you kneecap? I dislocated my kneecap so I know the feel, it is the reason I started cycling. Dislocating your knee is a heavy heavy injury. Wow...

      +Harry Edmund 63 was the high, it was 30 in morning and 20 at the top, so that's what I ment, 63 is not cold, but 63 brings cold at elevation

    That sucks big time about your knee! :(
    I would recommend easier gearing next time for sure. I have a bad knee injury from past martial arts training and recently completed an everesting up a 10% climb with a 50-34 on the front and a 40 cassette on the rear. I was able to complete it pain free. :)
    Looking forward to your next attempt!
