    Tyler, I’ve done six full 140.6 Ironman’s and this whole video never did I once think you did anything wrong. Listen, if you’re doing a self-supported IRONMAN “do your thing”. Take breaks, heck even if you draft ‘it’s your IRONMAN. You CANNOT and SHOULD NEVER draft in a race ... but if you’re doing your own thing, who cares. You do you. And lastly, when you walked downstairs backwards I laughed so loud! You’re awesome Man. I absolutely laugh at you, but it’s because you remind me of myself. And Iove laughing at myself. Please stop always worrying about what the critics/haters will say. You keep doing you. 😁👍

  • @BaptistePic
    @BaptistePic 4 года назад +321

    Bro, that was awesome !
    However, I strongly advise you not to do a 30-days running challenge. Unlike swimming and cycling, running puts a lot of mechanical stress to your body and as you're not used to running that much you'll just end up injured... take it slow and start with 1 or 2 runs a week and increase your mileage by no more than 10% from one week to the next

    • @DavidvdGulik
      @DavidvdGulik 4 года назад +25

      I was about to say the same exact thing. Your heart and lungs are not likely to be put under too much stress from running because you're so fit from cycling. But your muscles, tendons and joints are going to be your limiters and possibly put you in a lot of pain or even worse, get you injured, which might keep you off the bike for a while as well. Keep your intensity verrry controlled, no more than 3 times a week and don't go above 30 minutes for the first ~6 runs.
      Also try to start with 10 minutes of coordination exercises, this will help you a lot with developing your technique. Mind your body tension, keep an active posture, but don't strain. Try to not let arms, feet etc flap about, but do try to ease tension in your shoulders, arms, hands etc. All the while keeping that active posture

  • @lukesperling564
    @lukesperling564 4 года назад +34

    Hey Tyler! I love all of your content and really enjoyed this video.
    I am a 15 year old swimmer and mountain biker, and I want to start road biking and triathlons. In the overhead shots around 5:57, I can see that as you swim, your fingers open and close. Keeping your fingers together will make your pull more efficient. I can also see that when you pull, you are trying to stay in a streamline position however, your arms are crossing in front of your body. This can cause you to swerve in the water and decrease your swimming efficiency. Try for your hands to enter the water just outside of shoulder width, and your body will rotate slightly to each side making you streamlined. I had this same problem a few years ago and after my coach corrected it I dropped 14 seconds off my 200 free.
    Keep up the good work with all of your content and training!

  • @bjdm151
    @bjdm151 4 года назад +9

    The current distance of 26.2 was to accommodate the wishes of the Queen of England at the 1908 Olympic games. the original distance was around 25 miles which is symbolic of the distance from Marathon to Athens which was originally run by the Messenger Phiedippides (spelling?) to announce that the Greeks had beaten the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. Legend has it that after announcing the the news he promptly collapsed and died.

Your brief "break" at home around mile 15 and the description of your family's outpouring of love and pride when they thought you were done made my heart want to burst. You've got an awesome support crew/family and you TOTALLY get that they're watching everything you do.
    I've done 13 Ironmans so far myself and I can relate to those mental and physical valleys you were describing. Luckily, I had the benefit of 1) actual prep training (weird, right?) and 2) normal race day support (food & spectators), so I had it much easier than you and am blown away by the grit you showed to get it done.

    17:04 - totally right brother - your mind is the governor. If you say you're going to be working hard for 20 hours, your mind and body will prep for 20 hours. If you say "I'm going to swim 2.4, then ride 113, then I don't know" your body will plan on that. Great content. You're a beast for even trying this kind of effort. The mind is the absolute king of this. My first marathon was NYC - you finish the marathon, then you have to walk all the way up town, then walk all the way down. I couldn't tell you how many people ran strong all the way through the marathon, then passed out a half mile into the walk after the race was over. They set their minds to running 26.2, but that race is more like a 50k.

    Awesome job! When performing ultra-endurance events, the mental side is indeed harder than the physical. You need the inspiration to fuel you for just one more step...I'm extremely happy to see you had someone like your son and your family to provide this to you at your lowest moments! Again, congratulations and fantastic job! I truly enjoyed your video!

    Bro! This is too awesome. You know when you love a series and you tell someone about it and they haven't watched it yet and you get kind of jealous because you wish could could start from the beginning. Dude, I feel like that right now. Stumbled onto one of your videos and I can't stop!!!!! Fuck yeah

      That’s so amazing to hear bro! I know that feeling, I found LEMENIO last year and was so sad when I worked through his catalog and had to wait for new uploads. If you haven’t watched the “TRAIN LIKE A PRO” playlist, I daily vlogged my training in December. Pretty cool series to watch through as I really open up my life to the world.

    This is legit! The first Ironman was a competition between an elite swimmer, a roadie, and a marathoner. They did all three events in one day, but took time between for transitions into proper kit. Awesome job! It was really cool to hear your perspective! :D

    As a father, I love so much that your family inspired you to keep on going. It’s so on par with how your family helps you get through the hard times. You want to inspire, kindle, and encourage them, and the last thing you want to do is let them down. My son is just over a year and a half old, and I would love to see him be a little athlete just like I am. Having your son following you on the bike and then deciding to run with you through the night has got to be one of your proudest father moments so far. I’m actually tearing up because it’s so beautiful to see. I’ve gained so so sooo much love and respect for you and you son after watching this.

    Bro Marathon is the most painful part of an Ironman. Swim is a warm up , Bike is the Fun part, Run is the apocalypse. Good on you Bro ! hope to see you do an actual ironman event with a prepared training. Your take home there mate is the Mental toughness on your actual ironman event if your doing one soon .

    Awesome video. Don't really know why, I guess the overall honesty and a few moments of where a give-up got countered in an unexpected/unpredictable way.
    Shows the insane nature of full distance triathlon and the times these guys and gals produce. Mad respect though. Thanks for giving it a try for all all of us. Running does suck, but trying to like it, love the idea of the run every 30 days/let's make it evry other day for 45 days. Massive show grinta to continue the run. Loved to father son moment to make it all happen in the end. Shows what is sometimes needed to make it all worth while! Respect!

    Such an epic video. But I don't understand why you don't prepare for a run with at least a half marathon on your own time. I feel the pain in your legs all the way on the east coast. The kid was amazing too. Much love. I was telling my whole house what is happening during this video.
