And without a new STI on the roadmap, enthusiasts will need to embrace the latest WRX as the spiciest sedan to wear a Subaru badge.

Idk why you people are still questioning the cladding matte black finish on the fender and bumpers. It's a wrx meant for rally'ing where there would be a ton of dirty and rock build up, the plastic makes it less likely to scratch and easier to clean.
Been watching a lot of car reviews on this 22' WRX as I wait for mine and this one is probably the best. I love how you drive it fast on windy roads to really show the handling. That's a whole level above other reviewers.
Glad you liked the video! Enjoy yours when it comes
I've been watching countless reviews ever since I ordered my 2022 WRX in July and I would have to say that this is one of the best, if not the best. I got an email saying my car is built and I should be getting it in less than 2 weeks or so. Super excited to finally get my car 4 months later!
Heck, even the 152 hp impreza is "fast" on windy roads. low center of gravity and handling on subies are heavily underrated.
First time watching this channel. And I must say right off the bat that I love it. I’ve watched many over the years and have my favourite but you just get it. You nailed it. You get to the point. You’re not talking and focusing on one particular part, going on and on and on about it. Thanks
man that analog guage cluster is definitely one of the best ive seen
Try a 1989 Acura Integra cluster, even better.
funny you say that. My brother just bought one today and the first thing I noticed was the awesome analog tach. None of the digital BS. Very pleasing to look at.
I love that loose gravel test!
I got my 2022 6 speed Wrx and I absolutely love it and it gets so much attention! I love it!
The is the best driving perspective/review I’ve seen with the 22 WRX. You’ve made me re-think this car in a positive way. Well done! 👍🏾
Thank you for the feedback - glad you enjoyed the video!
I know several people will make the argument that double clutching is unnecessary when operating a synchronized manual transmission because you know, synchromesh. But I still believe that it doesn't hurt to learn. It's nice to see someone who has learned the technique put it to use. Never thought I'd see it done in a modern car haha. Awesome!
I've seen some used cars that were passed over because the synchros were shot - if you can double-clutch, you can walk away with a great car at a great price.
Always good reviews! Liked the Canyon Driving. Very quiet at exterior idle.
Great Review i ended up getting me the priemum wrx its a really nice solid car feels really built to last. I use it for a daily driver.
Just followed how you drive it, I want one already lol
Great vid. Nice test drive.
Thrilling review, and spot on. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks awesome in blue. Solid video. 👍
Glad you like it!
Manual is the way to go with this car
The plastic cladding under the doors is already all scratched up. For a longitudinal engine, it sure does seem to sit quite forward in the engine bay, ahead of the strut towers quite a bit more that it doesn't seem much different when compared to something like the new Si. yes/no anyone?
And, if so, then possibly could contribute to the under steer.
The little giggle after the gravel drift
I Like How You Really Ripped It! Lol! Killer Roads!
The design is definitely growing on me.
I've done about 3800 km in mine (I'm Australian) and I do plan to add a few mods, but other than that, I love it. The boxer feels much meatier than in previous models with a much better torque curve. Its a fantastic daily that with a few mods, it'll be a little rocket ship. Great review
One question. Is the actual part of the front seats in between the bolstering wider.. im a size 40 waist and the seats on my 2017 are a narrow and i sit more on the bolster than the seat its self ?
I hated this car until I saw one in person. As soon as that happened, I thought it over for a few weeks and ordered one. I need to replace my aging CUV daily driver, and there really isn't anything in this price range that combines the fun with cargo space and AWD.
Love the vid man
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video keep going👍
Thank you, I will!
Love this car! Hope to own one someday
You will brother keep the faith. I'll wave and honk ✌️
I glad that I brought the last STI instead of this WRX.
Fantastic review bravo
The rear works for the GR86/BRZ but somehow not for the WRX. Overall, I believe the GR Corolla will the AWD hot hatch king.
Considering the WRX isn’t a hot hatch, and the only other AWD hatch is the Golf R, there isn’t exactly a lot of competition…
I had the 2015. It was a lot of fun for $28k and being 27. I actually maxed it out at 147, which takes forever in a 270hp car. Scariest 5 to 6 shift ever.
I had to ditch it once i moved to the Bay Area. Clutching at bridges and the brutal ride(and i mean brutal plus no sound deadening) where not worth it. The ultimate daily hot hatch is the golf R. Its not the best performer but its the best car to live with. Great interior, infotainment, and mag ride shocks. Plus DSG will stomp all of these in straight line speed.
I think the Corolla will suffer the same issue as the Focus RS. Great performer, terrible car. Better reliability sure, but not a daily.
That being said, i do miss the manual. I'm putting a deposit down tomorrow on a manual supra 3.0.
Nah markupGR was DOA. That little motor isn't worth 40k. Sorry
@@baymaxfpv there are dealers that don't mark up cars, just gotta wait. I just put down a deposit for a manual supra, i'm 21st on the list. Price is msrp. Most likely i'm 10-15 as you know half the people won't be able to make the deal. Put my name down at the other dealer by me who doesn't do markups as well.
If you want it now, you're gonna pay.
I also don't think the GR corolla is going to be a good car, great performer, but tough to live with(just like the focus rs). Too small too stiff, too loud. Its a 20 something stretching their budget or maybe 30-40 year old 2nd car.
At least you can buy this car. The GR Corolla is extremely limited production, and thus will cost you significantly more.
Steering is super light picked one up last week. Might have to post some
I don't see this as the next WRX, I see it more as the spiritual successor to the Spec-B. And that's a good thing for me.
I really, really liked the Spec-B...lol
Though I never really liked the WRX ever, I am thinking I may get one in the near future
They definitely undercut the mpg, my average on my first week of owning it is about 26. That’s with me messing around but also learning my first manual. 😂
It’s not bad looking other than all the plastic. It’ll probably look great with a nice body kit
3" overall length added... 2 inches are from the rear bumper alone!
Awesome scenery at 6:30. Good choice of a route
The rear is just wierd which is one of my only issues with it. The rest of it looks good
You ever see it person you would see it looks even worse. Saw two in different color and it was just a big no from me.
It reminds me 2020 Toyota yaris from the back
@@v8_sami nope
Aftermarket is working on a “fix” for the rear bumper. I’m sure they will have different styles and might even come pre painted so you can pop it on. Problem solved 😎 I traded my 15 WRX Limited for a 22 WRB and it’s SOO much better. Go drive it and you will see what I mean.
Same
I was thinking when you were in the gravel “I would just rip the handbrake right here and have some fun” and then you ripped the handbrake
😂
Remember MilesPerHr that since the introduction of the 2015 WRX, it came with ELH vs '02-'14 WRX/04-21 STI where they came with UELH. Which is why you can barely hear the exhaust/rumble sound. Also it "only" has 3 hp from the previous FA20 Although the boost lbs were lowered. So that tells you a lot of HP/TQ was left on the table, for tuners..
Sti engine never changed its still the ej257 that is why the headers are diff and also why wrx is more fuel efficient and has peak torque earlier.
Not sure if subaru intended it for tuners but they have lower psi numbers because the the 2.4l is able to reach peak torque and sustain it better than the older fa.
@@441meatloaf Correct.. but read my comment above yours. You'll see that the headers are only different for the WRX after 2015.. Before then, they were the same as the STI, UELH.. Hence why the boxer rumble. Again, post 2015, the WRX Went ELH because they also gained DI.
Does Subaru thinking bring back the 05-07 look for the WRX Sti, if they do, they would sell more. It more aggressive and good looking. It just me
Unpopular opinion: It look really good
is it possible to make that head unit work in an older sti like a 2016
You know the outside of it doesn't look all that bad actually when you are sitting on the inside of it...
everyone complaining and rightfully so
but i will say i like that steering wheel. that seems like a huge step up for subbie
The steering wheel is pretty much the same as it has been for the last 7 years. It's a good one but it's definitely not new.
@@ianholmquist8492 oh 🤣
Nice review how do you compare the handling aspect to the 2022 civic si?
Si has better steering and less roll, but the WRX's AWD system allows better power out of corners
what is the brake caliper comes standard?
There is 2 things I love about the sti more than the wrx which is the sti transmission and sport sharp mode. But I have to say I love the interior
It’s super cheap inside. Garbage wrx
@@bless8861 when I first saw it I felt just like that but I’ll be honest it grew on me mostly the big screen but I have a 16 sti and I deff wouldn’t trade it for any wrx let’s see if sti launches one on 2023 they said only 2022 was canceled.
I love your honesty with the appearance, way to much plastic !!
many people hate this design while I really like this car.
Why are the RPMs so high? As soon as you break 40 MPH, stick it in 6th and leave it.
STI without Manual transmission? Tsc, tsc...Thank you for the review, it's excellent, but no, I rather stick with my all-new 2021 WRX STI Sport-tech for life. One the best decisions I've ever made.
horrible mileage with ej257
@@441meatloaf and I don't care a bit. There are full size trucks that get better mpg but they don't drive around grinning like I do. The 257 loves to rev and sounds amazing. I love it even though it is incredibly thirsty.
@@ianholmquist8492 Its meh. I drive the 2021 non sti version and its kinda ok ish. Though for the price of a premium sport model, would i drive or buy it again...probably not.
@@441meatloaf comparing a wrx to an sti is like comparing a wet noodle to a katana. The sti has real brakes, real suspension, limited slip diffs, hydraulic steering, real shift linkage and a proper turbo car powerband.. the regular wrx has none of those things. You can tell when you chuck them into a corner. One feels like a purpose-built machine, the other feels... not like that at all. I drove a 17 wrx for 4 years. It was OK but I never fell in love with it like I love the sti and for good reason.
@@ianholmquist8492 you do realize you can get a wrx with brembos and bilstein suspension....which is in the sti apart from engine diffs...mine has the brembos.
But clearly you are not aware of how much changes was made vs a 2017 version....
In terms of real performance and response times a wrx is better than a sti due to less turbo lag. Handling is negligible diff with bilstein option...other than steering hydraulic vs electric.
If you look at it objectively sti doesn't provide that much value vs regular wrxs.
the clutch takes some getting used to if you drove the 2016-2021 models.
Unclear from the video, but it seems like the clutch wasn't in for that handbrake turn. If any of you want to give that a try at home please use your clutch when applying the handbrake while moving, your central diff will thank you!
The clutch was in (the car would have stalled otherwise). But thanks for the PSA.
@@MilesPerHr Good to know, only experience is with my 04 wrx, not many safety oriented electronics there 😅
Are the speakers still bad?
Back end for me is what i dislike and honestly it's not too bad looking. It would grow on me.
Thats the first time I've heard the steering described as communicative. All the other reviews I've seen have said that the steering is sharp, but the power assist is dialed up to the point where feedback is non-existent. I mean, to be fair, I think steering feedback has gone the way of the manual transmission. Everyone just wants easy. The GR86 isn't even communicative these days 😂.
The cladding on the front and sides…eEeEeEeEeEhHhHhHhH ok fine. The rear is what kills it for me. Would also appreciate a few more physical controls to supplement the touchscreen on the interior. Otherwise I appreciate the performance improvements, but I agree the GT trim is a real head-scratcher. savagegeese said in their recent livestream that Subaru claims the logic behind it is that they think they can pull buyers away from the Golf R by combining all the top-end features with the automatic…yeah…good luck with that. WRX/Golf R shoppers will totally trade a DCT for a CVT. I just know they will. Should really offer the manual on that trim.
Subaru is smoking some good trees, if they think people will cross shop the Golf R which is underrated in hp and offers a Dct option that makes it a low 12 second car vs the 14 second Wrx. The Subaru is a unique 4cyl boxer engine powered economy car that is quite fun, nothing more, nothing less.
@@LJ-mp7ir Tbh honestly not sure what they were thinking there, but I don’t think they care to compete with VW. They are probably counting on WRX and other Subie owners to buy it.
Just FYI while yes the claimed 270ish crank horse power sounds like there was no improvement on performance with this new engine compared to the 2015-2021 Wrx’s fa20, this new fa24 wrx is putting 240-250 whp to the ground which is way up from the fa20 220whp max. Also these engines are good for 500whp+ and shops have already started testing this wrx, with no tune simply adding E30 resulted in over 300whp without proper tuning that’s just what factory ecu adjusted for on its own!
Peak power numbers mean nothing. Manufacturers should brag about the area under the torque curve. That's the real world driving difference.
@@SuzukiKid400 If everyone was an auto enthusiast than it'd be a great idea but they gotta consider a wide market
@@SuzukiKid400 the 300whp dyno test they are referencing hit 296 wheel torque at about 2400 rpm and stayed there till over 5.5k rpm. It really is an amazing engine.
Subaru should try and get some of those Toyota engineers working for them. Toyota is able to get 300hp out of a 3 cylinder, yet Subaru is struggling to get 3 hp out of .4 liters. Pretty sad.
@@matti551 I agree the wrx should put out more hp. Atleast 300hp out the factory.
u lower it get some wider wheels and get painmatched flares and lip it can look good but thats almost 4k to jus make it look good then u want intake exhaust tune maintenance etc idk it can look good but
Nice car 👍 haters gonna hate and I think they were smart knowing what the aftermarket community is like it opens the door for personalisation and upgrades. People buy these vehicles for the want of a suby regardless of haters opinions and seriously it would be designed to drive at a level that most wouldn't drive and still perfectly fine for the everyday driver👌
The armrest has adjustment just like the last gen.
My dream car to buy 🙏
the only upside on this gem of WRX is I have space for my Iphone XD
I’ve seen quite a bit of vitriol regarding the redesign, but I rather like it. It’s unfortunate that the STI variant won’t be carried over, but it definitely looks like a solid evolution - a bit more “up-market”, which opposes the historical ethos, but is eventual these days with a lot of makes. - Dope POV as always!
In what way is it up market? It is slower 0-60, heavier, gets worse gas mileage and is 5 to 8k more expensive than the previous generation..
The plastic trim looks absolutely abysmal, and most of the subaru fans and gearhead community agree.
the previous generation looks MILES more expensive and "upmarket" without any unpainted, cheap looking, matte black plastic. The fact Subaru put it all over this car in the quantity they did (especially that huge DIAPER of a rear "diffuser,") absolutely ruins the, otherwise nice, front end they put together. The rear proportions come through quite strange on video to me; I'll need to see one in person. I understand this will ultimately be up to one's own opinion, but I'd have to say the public seems mostly in agreement on this one.
All these people trashing the car without even driving it. The VB is a vast improvement over the VA in every way. Go drive it and you will understand.
@@elcheapo8212 same shifter feel and numb steering as the VA. The chassis might be stiffer, but that not a vast enough improvement for me to consider upgrading to a car that looks like hot garbage
Getting mine soon gonna going rally
Love the wrx! Waiting for the rolls Royce suspension vid!! ❤️
Phantom Drive Review and POV Ride videos are up now!
with my 2020 wrx i added the borla catback its not overly loud but sound amazing without annoying people lol i love it
I have a 2004 WRX and the borla hush catback is the only one I'd ever put on (mine is still stock). The borla hush catback does a great job of putting just enough emphasis on the boxer rumble without it being obnoxious like so many other vehicles.
How’s the glare on the center screen? Looks significant.
It can be bad, yes.
What has happened to the rear bumper design…
The 2022 Subaru is better than the gr86 but the car in these two categories would be the new Nissan Z. Definitely gonna need a review on that car once it comes out.
Coming later this month!
Is the automatic coming at a later date? Cause Subaru talked about it being better but there isn’t any videos about it
Its already out its just the manual version sells much better so you wont really see dealers selling the cvt to much
As of now, you have to order the SPT transmission WRX. Obviously the manuals will sell a lot more.
@@Ezio12376 which dosent make sense at all why the highest trim available is only in automatic 👨🏽🦯
my dream car, someday 🥺
I’m sure the auto does the 60 test in the low 5’s which is respectable
How would you compare this to a Giulia Q4? the WRX GT seems like it would be a direct competitor to that car.
Not having driven the CVT-only GT, it's harder to say, but the Giulia rides smoother and looks better to my eyes. The WRX is more fun to drive in more environments.
CONVINCE US SOME MORE! APART FROM THE AESTETICS I MEAN! THANX!
I was able to order one without the plastic cadding in manual
I made a decision to wait for GR corola

@@MilesPerHr 🥳
Does this model have the performance exhaust ?
Not from the factory
If the WRX STI is gone for good, Subaru should focus on giving the BRZ the full STI treatment.
Would be fun to see a BRZ STI, but it won't happen unless Toyota does a special GR86 (partnership rules)
Solid review, I get my 2022 WRX next week. I cant wait to drive it for myself!
I'm enjoying mine.
I love mine too
You'll have a great time behind the wheel
Man that rear end is just unforgivable.
Not bad looking motor. I have a Legacy JDM, looking to get a new Subaru, but heres the thing. I am not seeing this vehicle available in the UK. Yet it probably has the right engine, the right stuff that makes a Subaru a Subaru. UK Subarus now are 1.6 engines and just spoil the range.
This vehicle though, if it came to the UK, in estate version in particular, I would buy one. But it wont, so lost a customer haven't they, along with many others here in the UK who would buy this in a heartbeat, IF it is a proper Subaru.
Where is the POV night drive you talk about at 17:50 ?
ruclips.net/video/0oiSYqUTk7M/видео.html
3hp bump doesn’t matter when the engine sizes up from 2.0 to 2.4 ….
I really want to like the new WRX, but that center screen is a no-go just by itself. The glare is *horrendous* even when it's not in direct sunlight. I wish they would've kept all physical HVAC controls, and used a matte texture for the center screen (like the BRZ).
The base model has two smaller screens
Tint fixes glare?
If you don’t like the car then just say that. The glare is an easy fix. I have a new crosstrek that will be passed down to my wife soon, I will be sticking to Subaru strictly because of the screen and Hvac controls.
SUPER
Maybe Subaru assumed that we’d get used to the CVT transmission in the GT just like we’d get used to the looks of the car.
That’s very wrong buddy lol.
Sokd, you guys gonna pay more for the Super Sporty Ball
Did you notice the infotainment screen to be unusually reflective?
It definitely had glare, yes
Silverado/Santiago/Modjeska 😉
Rear end looks like a camry
Iam sure you will have no chance against my Ateca Cupra. 🔥 📛
Wow it sounds good for a stock engine
im lucky i bought a 2021 sti last july
just the rear and fenders look weird to me
Looked better without those plastic fenders, the worst are the tail lights, back bumper, front, side looks more eco sporty not aggressive and aero dynamic at all. Let's not talk about the inside.
20'STI owner
Subaru needs to send some people over to Lexus and update the console on the IS
I'd pay extra to paint the fender blue
