    Justin, the regulations are: "10.2 Goalkeeper’s Stick - In the case of a goalkeeper’s stick, there shall be a knob of white tape or some other protective material approved by the League. This knob must not be less than one-half inch (1/2'') thick at the top of the shaft."

    I've been using Sher Wood 9950 sticks for about four years now. I love the weight and balance of them, but they just don't last. How are the CCM sticks compared to the Sher Woods? (Weight/Balance and Durability)

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  10 лет назад

      ROSSKIAH Really, the 9950 isn't anything like the CCM, and especially not the custom sticks you get from the factory (I get my own pattern, etc, so it's not the same as what you'd find in a retail store). The 9950 tends to be a little heavier but also feel a bit more solid, though I haven't had a problem whatsoever with the durability of the CCM sticks. In fact, despite playing against advanced level players, I've yet to actually break one of these sticks in gameplay yet. Hope that helps!

    • @ROSSKIAH

      Thanks! Ill just have to compare at the store

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  10 лет назад

      ROSSKIAH Absolutely! I always recommend that for any piece of gear. If you do like the Sher-Wood you might also take a look at the Christian stick, which has a similar feel and increased durability due to the addition of additional layers on the front of the paddle.

    Try ribbed electrical tape above the paddle I gives you much nicer grip and control and the tape doesn't wreck your palm

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  10 лет назад

      ***** Never heard of ribbed electrical tape.. or do you mean electrical tape with ribs underneath of them? In my opinion electrical tape is too smooth and you won't get adequate grip like you will regular cloth tape. I've never had a problem with it damaging my blocker palms.

    • @jonnymorris7784
      @jonnymorris7784 10 лет назад

      Yeah you put electrical tape with the ribs under Neath at the top of the paddle for a bit of extra grip

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  10 лет назад

      ***** Interesting. I wouldn't think electrical tape would give you much grip since it's rubberized, but, hey, whatever works!

    I would recommend using white tape for the blade. From my experience it makes it a lot easier to see the puck if it is by your stick because of the contrast.

    hey thanks for the guidance and the help! so the way you tape your blade is the same way I do it. would it matter what colour the tape would be? because mine is white. and will the colour of tape like black or white affect how you pass or shoot?

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      Dre Gaming Nope, the color doesn't matter one bit. I have noticed some colors can be "stickier" than others (namely black tends to be sticker than white), but it might depend on the brand. Still, it's not a big deal overall. Glad the video helped!

  • @stephenray3838

    I use black double sided friction tape to make the Butt End. I learned it from Ron Hextall at the Flyers practice rink in the early 90s. The reason for the friction tape is that it makes the Butt End extramely hard and it doesnt shift or move. Plus, you can make it thin and wide. I coat the outside of it with two wraps of white tape. You should give it a try.

    Hey Tommy I'm playing Midget A here in Canada. I also have some bad chin acne. Now chin slings are not legalized by Hockey Canada or the G, but I want to get a maltese sling. My cup is really uncomfortable, so I played a practice without anything there (impulsive judgement) and felt less pain from headshots than I did with my cup. Would you advise that I get a sling and keep a cup in my bag if a ref wants me to change, or should i just let the cup hang under my chin?

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  8 лет назад +1

      +js_greene Great question. I had the exact same problem as you: terrible acne on my chin due to those chin cups. One thing you can try is getting a football helmet chin cup cover, which you can wash between uses. Supposedly it works awesome and is comfortable. If I were you I'd probably do what you suggested: leave it off and see if a ref ever notices. Bet they won't, lol.

    Stick looks nice! What you can also do instead of twisting the rib is hold the end of the tape and spin the roll....

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  8 лет назад

      +Kyle S You absolutely can, but the twist won't be as snug. I tried that but the twist ended up coming apart a bit, whereas twisting the tape manually made it a tighter twist, which I prefer for consistency.

    • @hepcatkillers
      @hepcatkillers 5 лет назад

      Yeah, I usually just stick the end of tape to the stick, then I twist the tape, wrap it as ribbing, and then use the untwisted tape to cover the ribbing. Takes maybe a minute and looks like this.

  • @TheAwesomeness756

    I like wide tape more, for the knob I split the wide tape in half and make a knob that is big enough that my hand won’t slip off, for my handle part I like to make a little knob of clear tape because of my hand being pretty big and I also get a little better grip of my stick.

    Recently attended a USA Hockey Goalie Coach Symposium taught by Shane Clifford and Dave Caruso, both were clear about the importance of attaining balance in the stick after taping the blade. They did comment on the ice that they liked my larger ribbing set up using 1/4" diameter nylon rope, some other coaches asked if it impaired my ability to perform the flying poke check, I stated I don't use a flying poke check, I prefer to use my torso and shoulder in a 'twist and extension' like I'm spearing through the puck/player's stick (Always on that guy's stick who's really digging, got a stick shaft right above the blade tonight on one of these Miners). Both instructors chimed in to state "don't teach the flying poke check, it doesn't pay off 90% of the time, you're taking a huge risk in losing your stick, and the recovery time is way too long and you're probably giving an opportunity for a goal in the process."
    So that's some word straight from two NHL Goalie Coaches/Former NHL Goalie.
    Retain the stick, use it's center as a third eye, tracking the puck, when playing it, if you're going for a short hard pass, use a Turko grip, if you need a quick saucer pass, cradle the paddle to lift it. They advised a butt end that achieved the best balance of the blade and distal end, and allowed easy recovery if you do happen to lose it.
    I often get a little tired/lazy and that's usually when the butt end will get snagged either on the net or under the lip of the horizontal face of the net. I see a lot of rounded style butt ends, some actually tear drop shaped, thought I might try it as it wouldn't snag as easy.
    Either way, these guys who teach NHL Goalies and judge potentials stated, the most important point is to keep your stick, that it's balanced, and works without impairment according to your play style.
    I've personally switched to the waxing method demonstrated in this video as well as the taping of the toe. Really like that. I personally prefer a very tactile grip on the distal end, just seems to help me feel when my hand is gripping high enough, when I need to play the puck quickly and put the team back in the direction of their zone. Also gives me more confidence due to the increased grip and better feel for the rotation of my wrist. when handling the puck prior to playing it.
    Thanks for making this information available, a lot of coaches simply are clueless when it comes to the goalie and every bit of knowledge gives em some base for confidence to work and train their goalies. Often RUclips is the only real resource a lot of coaches have when it comes to understanding the position enough to properly dress, advise a parent and train their goalies. Keep it up.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад +1

      Shawn Kendrick Wow, comment of the year right here, haha! I agree about the flying poke check; I'd much rather retain my stick and good positioning than go for a desperation save that often ends up in embarrassment, lol.
      And I really appreciate your comments and your gratitude. I agree 100% that most coaches are truly clueless about what to do with goalies -- hell, most goalie coaches I know don't do it right, unfortunately. I was thinking of doing a couple coaching videos.. look for those soon, as I'll be the goalie coach for a local junior team this season. More great stuff to come!

  • @Christian-rz3hs
    @Christian-rz3hs 9 лет назад

    hey Tommy!!! like the reviews you've been giving on each goalie equipment you've had the chance to try. but this one I had to make a comment on preference. you've taped your blade from heel to toe (as I used to do before) and not to much overlap. but I found it to be heavier. so I decided to tape half way to toe with half overlap with the tape, witch I found was a little less heavier and gave me better puck movement and passing/shooting ability. but again all in preference

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      +Christian Tessier Ahh, very interesting. I tend to like to tape the entire blade, as it allows the puck to saucer off the blade more consistently, especially since an untaped blade can become very slippery during a game. But, as you said, it's all personal preference. Good luck!

    One thing i do to make the tape last even longer is i put one coat on and use a torch on low melt the wax in and put two additional coats of wax on for a total of 3. I dont think it adds any more weight and add to the durability. Any suggestions on repairing the chips and cracks on most of these composite sticks? I prefer the foam core sticks but seems like less and less of them exist and everyone is switching to composite only. needless to say i LOATHE composite goalie sticks.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  10 лет назад

      meversmannpa I also hate composite sticks.. I don't trust them, they're too expensive, and most of them are made with silly parts that don't feel like a traditional stick. So unfortunately I don't have any tips on fixing composite sticks, though I do know there are some places out there who will fix them. As for the number of coats of wax, that's a crazy amount, LOL. Whatever works for you!

    Referring back to taping the butt end, don't use black tape. When i was playing in the International Silversticks Tournament, I had black tape on my butt end and the ref gave me a penalty for some reason, and i wasn't able to use the stick so I had to put a piece of white tape on the butt. From this point one i only use white tape.

      Keaton Munn I haven't tried it primarily because it's technically illegal in the NHL, as it doesn't come to a 1/2" butt end at the top. I'm surprised no one has called him out on it yet.. it comes out to about 1/4" or so, but doesn't get all the way to the requirements.

    i bought a warrior ritual vr2 stick as i recently broke my ccm retroflex but with this new stick i don't feel comfortable with it i feel like its week and going to snap and I've only had it 3 days have you ever felt that? if you have what did you do as i only have the one stick because my parents don't want to spend any more money on sticks as I've snapped 4 in the first half of the season and i still need to pay my mom back with the money i might get on my birthday which is on wednesday so i don't know if i will get enough money for another stick and i have a couple of rally important games coming up is there any websites you can recomend that sell goalie stick at good low prices?

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад +1

      Warren Hargreaves Every stick does have its own feel, and maybe that one is extra whippy so it feels like it might snap.. hey, if it does and you just bought it, hopefully it'll be covered under warranty! But if you're going through four sticks in the first half of the season, that makes me think there's either something wrong with the level of stick you're purchasing or the way you're using the stick. I go through 1-3 sticks a YEAR depending on how much I'm playing.. how often do you play? Assuming you're younger, I'm betting that means you're doing practices and whatnot. What I might recommend, then, is getting a cheap but sturdy stick as your practice stick and then a pro level stick as your game stick. Pro level sticks are typically more prone to breaking, while the sturdy stick (like a Christian stick from TH) will be durable enough to last a long time. Hope that helps!

    Hey Tommy, I just have a question on curves. I'm looking for a stick that can get hard, moderately high shots off, as I play the puck behind the net a lot. I'm coming from a PP41 toe curve BTW. Out of the Warrior patterns, would this: sizing.hockeygiant.com/Warrior/goalie/Warrior-Backstrom-Twist-Goalie-Blade-Pattern-2012.jpg, this: sizing.hockeygiant.com/Warrior/goalie/Warrior-Rask-Kiprusoff-Heel-Goalie-Blade-Pattern-2012.jpg) or this: (sizing.hockeygiant.com/Warrior/goalie/Warrior-Howard-Goalie-Blade-Pattern-2012.jpg be my best option?

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      js_greene If you want something somewhat similar to the P41, go with the Howard pattern. The others are pretty extreme: Backstrom has a big twist and Kipper has a huge heel curve.

      GoalieCreaseNet Just out of curiosity, what of those 2 would give me the most loft? Power?

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад +1

      Power comes from your arms and the flex of the stick; loft is up to your wrist action. Personally, I never recommend making your stick decision based on loft; make it on accuracy. Check out my pattern, which I show in the CCM Pro Authentic review I just uploaded: I use a VERY slight heel curve. That's because it gives me accuracy in my passes and, first and foremost, stops the puck when people shoot five hole. Remember stopping power first, accuracy second, then work on power. Loft is unnecessary in today's game.

    • @cflargofan
      @cflargofan 9 лет назад

      GoalieCreaseNet My team doesn't really know what to do when I have the puck (even though I've told them numerous times where I want them positioned), so a dump is usually my only option. Based on your criteria, and regardless of my past curve (which wasn't my favorite), what would you recommend? BTW my favorite curve is the Leclaire. Way to plug the new review, I'm just about to watch it. Thanks as always.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      I'd still recommend the Howard in your case. It's not a severe curve, so is good enough for blocking, accuracy, and power. Being only a mid-curve it might take a little more to lift it, but it shouldn't be a problem if you have the power.

      Thank you, I appreciate the reply! I have one other question. Would you happen to know any tips on how to perfect a butterfly slide? I am good at going from left to right, but struggle greatly going in the opposite direction.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад +1

      All goalies tend to have a dominate side, and usually it's the side opposite of the trapper. You'll probably also notice your left groin is more flexible than your right groin. Because of this difference in power and flexibility, it takes different muscle movements to do the same action. Unfortunately, the only great way to overcome it is to practice.. and a lot! I'd recommend trying to get to a stick and puck, getting fully geared up, and go into a corner or the side boards and just work on movements like I did on my newest video over on zynesthete . Good luck, man!

    If you happen to like a thicker rib, you can also use some nylon cord, or rope, or for a thinner rib, that stays, and doesn't flatten and can be reused if you re-tape the handle for whatever reason, 550 cord works great. If 550 cord is too thick and you want the durability of nylon, but the flat rib like tape gets after a few uses, simply pull the nylon strands from inside the 550 cord. once you adjust the rib for the pinkie finger, tape it in place, and you can adjust the ribs as you tape the handle down. Be sure to wear your blocker during this, as it'll feel different.
    In the past, I would often take a lighter a quickly go over the wax after the process above, then let the stick sit over night to ensure the glue on the tape didn't get loosened from too much heat. My thought process was to form a better seal with the wax over the surface of the blade, as a quick once over with a lighter, melted the wax into a uniform surface, and kept less moisture from collecting on the tape. Having done both methods, I haven't felt a measurable difference really after 3 weeks at 4 hours a week. So that's probably something in my head.
    On the butt end, I've read or heard two perspectives on this, in regard to a small versus larger butt end. The smaller butt end theory is that the butt should fit comfortably into the blocker palm in order to properly play the puck, getting the most leverage by putting the force at the most distal point of the stick. The larger butt end theory is to prevent the butt from possibly getting caught in the net, making the stick easier to recover when dropped, especially if the blocker glove is further back from the toe of the blocker, and when playing the puck, allowing you to more confidently thrust the stick out, as your hand will hit the butt end and stop as the stick slides through just in case you don't start to grip quick enough.
    Personally I'm somewhere in between, as I don't like the balance with a small butt end, and I don't like the huge butt end for the same reason, and usually use the amount of tape on the butt end to keep a nice balance on the stick, and decreasing fatigue. That's all I got, and my personal preferences and what I've seen as a goalie coach, various online training videos that cover goalie gear, and being an adult goalie. Thanks for the video, GCN, found some new things, loved the toe tape method, and used that while I re-taped my stick.

      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      Shawn Kendrick Awesome, Shawn! And thanks for the awesome... and awesomely long... comment, haha! I think you win an award for this one!
      That's an awesome idea, to use like a thicker cord for the ribs. I had never thought of that, and that's a fair point that the cord won't flatten like the tape tends to do. I might give that a whirl and if I ever do an update to the video, I'll absolutely put that in.. very nice!
      I also tend to agree about the butt end. I know there are many who are interested in the Carey Price butt-end, and I should probably do a video on how to do it; it's not difficult, but it IS technically illegal in the NHL, as it doesn't meet the thickness requirement at its largest point. That's why I haven't tried it yet (which is silly since I'll never play anywhere where it would be checked, haha!), but, like you said, I also don't want it to get caught in the net accidentally. I might give that a whirl someday, too.
      Anyway, thanks for the awesome comment, Shawn! Good luck out there!

    Hi I'm a high school goalie and have been watching you a bit I want to improve but our practices don't have open time really. And being a high school student open time is minimal. But I really need to improve as we just moved from jv to varsity this year. I also have been getting my skates sharpened at 15/16ths and want to have a sharper edge but don't want it to much that it's a giant change any recommendation. I have other questions as well but don't want to write a book.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  9 лет назад

      +Chaldian Wow.. 15/16 is not sharp at all and is very much not in line with where most goalies get them sharpened nowadays. I would recommend STARTING at 1/2" and going from there. Most goalies nowadays get 3/8", though, for much more bite, but that will likely be far too much for you. Try 1/2" and see how that goes, then go up or down from there. Hope that helps!

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  8 лет назад +1

      We can agree to disagree, no problem with that. :) My thinking here is just because he starts with "wrong" doesn't mean he needs to try "less wrong" before he started out where most goalies start out at. Not that it really is "wrong," but that in my experience, especially when I teach younger goalies, having them start at 1/2" gives them more ability to figure out if it's better to stay there or, typically, move sharper at 3/8". Extremely few move to a duller sharpening. In comparison, in Juniors I used 11/16", which is crazy dull compared to most sharpenings nowdays. Most NHLers are using 3/8" or 1/2", so if you want to use what most of the modern pros use, I start of the kids early getting used to what are the "normal" sharpenings. Anything above that typically isn't used by any modern pros I talk to. Anyway, hope that helps!

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  8 лет назад +1

      Well, to be honest, there really aren't "hybrid" pads in the same sense that there used to be. I think if I was a hybrid goalie and I had to choose a pad, I'd go with the CCM EFlex2s. But, then again, I'm a butterfly goalie and those are the pads I use, haha.

    • @ourgoalielife
      @ourgoalielife  8 лет назад

      I haven't heard much about the SZ3s, but I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I get a chance to try some out. The SZ2s were pretty nice when I tried those. I'm also looking forward to the new Kohos, but those are still a while away from public release. They look BEAUTIFUL, though! As for email, you can email me at tomy@goaliecrease.net, but, to be honest, your best bet is RUclips comments, especially on a video that's relevant to your question. I know it would be annoying, but then I get notifications for those and I check them every day or so, whereas I check that email once a week if I'm lucky, ha! You keep up the great work, too!

    • @JRgamerrz
      @JRgamerrz 8 лет назад

      To clarify I get them sharpened like that because it was recommended I sharpen them that way a while ago and when changing the bite has been very heavy. But besides the point I may have gotten a 4th concussion and that could mean I have to hang up the skates.

      LOL No, no, I know it wasn't, haha. I usually kick out the family for when I do videos because of that, lol. We have five kiddos including two daughters, so there's always someone yelling at someone else, lolol.

    as far as buying the correct sick length is it a good idea to size it like you do a player stick? i.e. stick butt to nose?

      dontBEaSYNk Great question.. wish I would've had that question when I did the video, haha! Maybe I'll do another video about it. Really, sizing a goalie stick isn't anything like sizing a player stick. A player stick, for a defenseman, might be at the nose, while a forward might be at the clavicle. For a goalie, though, mine tend to be at my chin without skates on; I cut off about 2.5-3 inches off my sticks similar to Carey Price. It reduces weight, gives me more leverage to shoot the puck, better maneuverability when dealing with pucks at my feet, and then my stick won't get caught in the net. Works out very well!

      GoalieCreaseNet Thanks for the answer! Ive heard bad things about cutting your stick, like it throws the balance off or something... but if it really is ok ill give it a shot... maybe to a stick nearing the end of its career.

      Nah, it's not too big of a deal. Most pros cut it down a little bit; Price is probably the most extreme, though there are a few other NHLers who cut it down a bit, too. Good luck!
