    Great video- have watched many videos regarding dividing dahlias but none as specific and detailed as yours. Loved that you used the pen to circle the eyes to make them more visible to us newbies. Only my 3 rd year growing and have not divided yet- also appreciated the up close focusing to help us visualize them. Thanks for all the tips regarding tools , disinfecting and storing. Thank you for discussing the anatomy! I watched a few videos before this and everyone talks about the eyes and necks like we all know what they mean 😅 It's my second year growing dahlias in my yard and I plan on digging them up and dividing them since I introduced so many lovely new varieties and I definitely want some for next year. Hopefully I'll be able to share with my MiL and we'll both have some beautiful additions ☺️ Thanks so much for your very informative video!

      @@InTheGardenWithClaudia Oh wow, thanks for the response ☺️ Heh, so I literally grabbed 1 or 2 of every variety of dahlia they had on the racks at my local Walmart - sure, not the best place to source bulbs but when you're on a budget, it'll do just fine (and thanks to your video, I was actually able to successfully divide a few and double the number I had to plant!) But now I have no idea which ones I put where 😂 Once they bloom, I'll make note of who's where! My MiL has a lot of the pom-pom and water lily types and I really like the cactus ones - something about those spiky petals does it for me! And I love the yellow with the bright orange/pink edges.
      I managed to scoop up an interesting cultivar of fuchsia from there on Mother's Day, too. It was the only one with white sepals and I'm leaning towards a Paula Jane variety but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm just excited to have all these amazing plants that will continue to reward me with beautiful flowers, year after year ☺️
      Thanks for letting me ramble about my flowers!

    How many weeks before your last frost date, due you typically take your dahlias out of storage, to start in pots?

    • @InTheGardenWithClaudia
      @InTheGardenWithClaudia  3 года назад +1

      I actually don't start mine in pots. I plant them directly outside once there's no chance of frost, so for me that's late April or May. However, if you wanted to get an early start, you could start them in containers indoors about 4 weeks before your last frost, and then slowly transition them outdoors like you would with seedlings after any chance of frost.

      @@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thank you! My Dahlias barely bloomed last year before the frost hit (they were planted directly in the ground). Thanks for the 4 week suggestion. I've read online, that last year wasn't a great year in my area for Dahlias. I also found out that Dahlias have different bloom times (i.e. 75 days, 90 days, 120 days etc). Perhaps the Toto Anemone dahlia I have is one that takes 120 days. After watching your videos, I purchased a few 75 day dahlias from swan island. Can't wait to give them a go this year.

    • @InTheGardenWithClaudia

      Hmm, were they around the crown of the clump? I have found some eyes high on the crown and not too close the neck like in others. But I still divided them and they were okay. @@InTheGardenWithClaudia thanks for the sharpening advice. I wouldn't have thought to do that since it's brand new.

    is it easier to distinguish eyes during the spring? I' cant find any so far

      Yes! If you are a beginner dividing in the spring may be easier since the eyes typically have a green or purple color to them so they are more easily identifiable. However if you dived them shortly after digging them it, they are also pretty visible. I hope you saw the examples in my dividing videos, I tried to show close ups. 🥰

    What if you mess up and have more than 1 eye for a tuber? Do you cut out the other "brains" just leaving one for one tuber? Thanks : D

      I would just leave them. 🥰

      @@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thanks, I guess it's not real "brain surgery" on a Dahlia tuber - stoopid me : D Today saw your new Swan Nurs Vid, what an operation to actually remove and replant 40 acres of Dahlia's! I apprec. you showing us the many aspects of their whole opr & it being labor intensive like us home gardeners, no shortcuts to get these beauties: )
      ps Is your interior renovation coming along? Did you plant up your new back yard - Lots of trees, perennials & Figs? I remember the concrete being hoisted into place. So many exciting projects to behold (like Laura & Aaron at Garden Answer) Seems like you fell off my YT radar ??? but glad to see you're back.

    you didn't mention the need to dry tubers before storage and using cinnamon on cut areas

      Hi Formosa, I think I added a note to the description about waiting a day or two before storing after dividing, if not I will. Also I mentioned that in my latest dividing video. As far as common, I have never used that and have never had any issues before. But good callout for anyone who has issues with storing dahlias.🥰

      Sheri, last year a grew a little over 100, this year it will be more. 😆 I don’t know exactly yet how many more, but luckily I have a friend with 14 acers which will hopefully be my overflow flower garden. 🤣 How about you, do you grow dahlias?
