Nice review of the JMM glasses. Hype aside, from a pure quality perspective I think the biggest difference is that these are hand made acetate and titanium from the best factory in Japan, whereas the Oliver Peoples frames are owned by Luxotica and haven't really been the same quality wise since.
I like to wear nice stuff ($500 shoes and $300+ perfume). No one ever notices, not once got a compliment. But when I turned up at work wearing JMM (optical) glasses, there was an avalanche of compliments from people I never suspected to even know my name. JMM may be hyped, but they are not overhyped. BTW, I counter red indentations with a very thin film of vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the contact area. Works like a charm. I find it a small price to pay for being noticed (in a good way).
$300 perfume doesnt mean theyre "nice" to other people. most $300+ perfumes are niche and it might be unique and smell nice to you but the general public (esp girls) prefer sweeter smelling (ysl colognes) or more basic designer cheaper perfumes like sauvage or bleu de chanel (if you're a guy). theres a reason theyre so played out and popular. A lot of $500 shoes look like shit/meh to the general public, again if youre a guy looking to get compliments, most girls will be quick to compliment some cheap $100 oxfords or boots over some expensive designer shoes (which tbh looks a lot like dad shoes, even the dior sneaker line) or hyped nikes/jordans or just sneakers in general (most girls don't care for sneakers on guys). JMM look nice (as does most brands/glasses that cost over $500) on initial glance but you could spend half as much to get more or the same attention if that's what you're looking for - any just detailed, more intricate designed opticals which are pretty much 80% of glasses once you are willing to spend over $600+). the problem is JMM hype is fake and their quality is trash, especially for their sunglasses. if you have any pieces with silver ingrained into the sunglasses which JMM loves to do, it will tarnish terribly and you won't be able to polish it, if you own turquoise pieces from them, they are low quality turquoise with shit stained browning that happens quickly, their lettering inside fades off within months, they have low quality control and they sell their bstock flawed pieces online. this is a open secret to their enthusiasts (who have since migrated to other brands)
@@user-po9yi1mo1s I don't wear sneakers. At all. Im all about classic footwear, mostly from brands like Crockett & Jones, Magnanni, Santoni or RM Williams. But wether it's a rugged Red Wing or a C&J captoe oxford with a mirror shine, people here just don't seem to notice or care. The same goes for the fragrances, regardless if it's popular designer or upper echelon niche. The JMMs were an entirely different experience though. But while I don't share your view/experience about the quality, I do agree that you can get bold, attention grabbing, high quality eyewear for less money. My wife's Cutler & Gross glasses have about the same effect as my JMMs and were about 60% of the price. But just like the footwear and fragrances, I buy stuff primarily for myself and the compliments are just a nice bonus 🙂 Im still looking for a nice pair of sunglasses though. If you have tips for high quality eyewear brands, I'd really appreciate it.
Unless you're in some fashion conscious area, most people won't notice if you have on $500 dollar shoes or expensive perfume. The most compliments I've openly received were on my purple Lakers edition timberland boots and my 100 pair of James oro sunglasses. My retro Jordan's get more attention than my gucci sneakers or my genuine crocodile shoes.
I own both brands and love both. I agree that you can feel the difference. I am ok spending on luxury watches and sunglasses because they last a lifetime and beyond. They can become heirlooms or sold if needed. We are all adults, it’s expected we don’t lose our items. If you are a person who’s prone to lose things, then luxury items may not be for you. Regarding insurance, that’s perfectly legal. You can also claim them out of a health spending account through your employer if prescription.
Most sunglasses, like persol, Ray Bans, Oliver People's And many others are made by one company. JMM stands alone. They are handmade in Japan with the highest materials of acetate & Organic cotton and wood. JMM eye wear is totally different from the rest. Very comfortable all day long. I have The Molino sun. I have many pairs of Persol's & 3 pairs of Oliver People's & my far JMM are the best with a Caveat $750.00 dollar.
luxottica, is the company that owns persol and ray bans and many more. Ray Ban quality is not good, but persol is still all hand made in italy, like they have been for over 100 years. JMM has no history and you can buy persol and £600 in change instead of buying JMM.
Hey Mark, thanks for the review. If the glasses are putting too much pressure on your nose you may want to adjust the arms so that they are tighter on the back of your head by bending the ends inward more. Try that out, let me know if helps!
I own 4 pairs of JMM's- 2 Dealans, the Torino and a pair of Jaggers. The Dealans are INSANE and my go-to faves in my collection! The quality, craftsmanship, design and all is second to none. You also have to remember that JMM's are limited in their production which, makes them that much more "worth their price" and creates more value benefit. Also, it's an independent company that's NOT owned by Luxotica, like EVERY other sunglass/eyewear company out there. Something about that fact makes the the JMM's that much more....appealing and special as well. Additionally though... I'm a HUGE Oliver People's fan as well. I own 3 pairs of the Oliver Suns.
I’m looking into getting into a first pair of JMM sunglasses, non-script. I’ve been window-shopping for a few years, and considered GLCO (Kinneys - which may be slightly s for my face/head) or Oliver Peoples Cary Grant (I own RB’s and Persols already, and I am on the fence of Luxxotica-made pieces). I do keep circling back to JMM, due to the heavy nods to the American/Mountain West style touches and the 60’s/70’s Mediterranean/Cote D’azur through a mid-90’s filter style of so many models - timeless and elegant! I’ve been considering the Ashcroft and Walker models (actually big fans of both Richard Ashcroft and Scott Walker coincidentally). I enjoy the Ocre/Whiskey color acetate frames, but open to other frame colors. My face/head are WIDE (size 8 hat is slightly big, but all-day comfortable for me. My current collection/rotation consists of Ray Ban Aviators w/ a 58mm lense (most comfy/easy wearing pair as well as oldest) Persol 2761-S listed at 60mm on the ear stem. My widest pair. These feel really heavy on my face/slide down on my nose and over the 10 years I’ve had them, I feel like the stems/acetate have distorted and lost shape. My “coolest” looking pair, but probably hardest to wear from the moment I put them on now. Lastly, I have a pair of RB Wayfarer with the biggest lense size available (54 or 55?) I’ve owned these for 3 years now. Loved them to death when I got them, but have fallen out of favor over the last year or so when I started noticing a pinched feeling right about my ears on both sides. This made me venture back to my Aviators. Sorry for the “novel” definitely interested in multiple pairs to weed out, and get first (the Jaggers are definitely riding high for my favorite Aviator/metal frame style. Just wanted to gauge advice and opinions from current owners. I definitely value style over fashion. I’ve been told I’ve had a good and at times bold sense of style. I love timeless style with heavy nods to the art deco movement through to the early 80’s and love the mid-90’s (94-98). So basically all over the place! Ha.
The Juilien is one of my 2 pairs (Ascari is the other) and it is my favorite. I try not to over wear it. Only 100 pairs of Julien made and mine is 99/100.

Few corrections about the sunglasses, they are not made of plastic but cellulose acetate, which is made from wood pulp and cotton linters. Also the metal frames inside the sunglasses are made from titanium. taking into account that one pair of sunglasses requires a 300 step procedure over the course of 18 months, the price tag of 800-1,000$ is to some extent justified.
It's about craftsmanship. I have several DITA, also hand made in Japan. Same with JMM, which also brings vintage and retro back with some class. Pricey, yes. DITAs run 4s to over 1k. The detail in these are amazing. I have the Dayton's in Agar and the detailing is INSANE. Paid over $3K with Rx lenses. But love them. Taos are amazing. Sorry but OP and GL are normal everyday sunnies. Good, but mass produced by Luxottica.
Their stuff is always nice! But are they $1000 nice? I don't think so. But they are some of the best glasses in the industry and everybody respects the brand.
I mean if $1000 is a lot for you to spend for you then they aren't targeted at you anyway. I wouldn't spend this on sunglasses but we aren't the target demo.
JMM is worth the money for me because I wear prescription lenses. I would go cheaper if I was just looking for regular sunglasses. My insurance did cover a lot of the cost for the frames and to have my prescription lenses put in.
There are a lot of brands much better quality and price wise than Oliver Peoples. The only Oliver Peoples Worth getting were the ones from Larry Leight pre Oakley and Luxottica. Jacques Marie Mage, Matsuda, and Chrome Hearts are all very decent. Jerome Mage individually hand picks the best Tekiron acetate in Sabae Japan to make the best glasses he can. The process to make all JMM glasses takes 18 months and over 300 steps to make 100% made by hand and all pieces are limited edition. A much better alternative in my opinion to Ray-Bans is either Gast, Tejesta, Moscot, or BOSS. Overall Great video, sorry if I was a little harsh, and like seeing people put out eyewear content. It needs to be a larger genre of yt content.
@@SirJeanLucAsec so Tejesta are designed in Miami, Fl and from my understanding most of their acetate styles are handcrafted out of Miami using Mazzucchelli acetate. I have seen a few models out of a China from their metal series, but it does say that the materials they use for some of their metal series of glasses are from Japan. Mazzuccheli acetate isn’t quite as good as Takiron, however for the price you are paying Tejesta is very reasonable in terms of pricing for Mazzucchelli acetate. More so than anything I would be more concerned with the the materials and techniques used in each frame rather than where they were built. For example a Garrett Leight frame or Gast frame will be much higher quality in terms of acetate moisture retention, metals, polishing techniques, and hinge design than a pair of Ray-Ban. Garret Leight and Gast are both ethically made in China using high quality techniques taught to highly skilled workers, where as Ray-Ban are sometimes made in China or Italy by less skilled entry level workers. Despite that being the case I would always rather buy from Garrett Leight or Gast. Another good one to add into the mix of great affordable eyewear brands is Vintage frames company. Look at the story pages for most of the companies, talk to some sales reps, and go in to feel quite a bit of products and you’ll get a deep understanding of how the companies are ran. If you want a little bit of an inside look into the industry listen to Garrett Leight’s GLCO Spectacle Podcast or watch some Corey Shapiro interviews. Listening to the creators of these companies and hearing the process of what they go through is great education and puts a lot of perspective into what you are buying. Great question and I hope you find a great pair of frames that works for you. If you want any other brand suggestions per certain price points let me know.
@@gengator4543 thanks for the thorough answer, much appreciated :) I have owned a pair of Garrett Leight optical, and they failed me twice by breaking in the middle :/ But I agree, the way it’s manufactured is equally important than the place itself, and I must say I have found few references from Tejesta that look great!
@@SirJeanLucAsec ah okay, sounds like the issue is more of a durability than a longevity issue then, because with a GLCO frame as long as you take good care of it the acetate will maintain its moisture and the highest should work well for a while. In term of how durable they are though that’s a different story. If you’re looking for durability at that price point I would turn to companies such as Reykjavikeyes, Naruto Naganata, J.F. Rey, or Maui Jims. Which those brands will show longevity as well, but in different ways more suitable for a bit more rugged wear.
@@SirJeanLucAsec now if you don’t mind hiking prices a bit I have a quite a few more I would suggest, but over those are the more durable frames for that price point.
Oliver Peoples are making nice glasses considering that they are owned by Luxottica. JMM is a cool brand but going down the route of getting too popular and oway overpriced. Their designs are also getting more generic with each season that goes by. I reckon the brand will be sold soon to a big conglomerate.
@@nerdbamarich2063 Fellini, Taos, Dealan, Enzo - Squarzi collab, molino, zephirin - Hollywood limited release (and a pair of Roxy’s for my wife) Hard to pick a favorite. I like them all honestly. The Fellini, Taos, Molino and Dealan are all great anytime. Enzo and zepherin for certain situations. The Enzo’s really cover your eyes so I tend to wear them in the morning or anytime I just kinda feel like going incognito and not talking to people 😂
@@codex6594 just looked at them. I had never heard of them. Definitely look like they are precision made and solid. Unfortunately, such minimal styles and I’m not a fan of any of them
You mean chrome hearts? And the quality and craftsmanship on JMM is much better than Chrome Hearts. Plus, Chrome Hearts is a fashion brand and JMM is a niche Sunglass house specialising in Sunglasses. I am definitely going to get the Zephirin model in Saber soon.
@@sanjayt1988CH & JMM quality is practically indistinguishable in the acetate, but the details on the CH’s are superior. Also the Chrome Hearts dimensions measure more true! The price of both are absurd for essentially only plastic frames!
I have maybach , chrome hearts , VOA , Cartier, JMM , dita , Hublot, Balmain , matsuda , T. Henri , Vava , kuboraum sunglasses. But I must say dat for acetate sunglasses- JMM are d best .
i can promise you that as an owner of this brand, i can say they are great but if you want a japanese made frame thats a fraction of the cost that uses even more impressive lenses then look no further than Archibald London. A true master piece and incredible for sunglasses from Japan. Oliver peoples has the style and history but since they are Luxxottica, they are giant POS and waste of money,.

Great question and I hope you find a great pair of frames that works for you. If you want any other brand suggestions per certain price points let me know.
@@gengator4543 thanks for the thorough answer, much appreciated :)
I have owned a pair of Garrett Leight optical, and they failed me twice by breaking in the middle :/
But I agree, the way it’s manufactured is equally important than the place itself, and I must say I have found few references from Tejesta that look great!
I clicked on this to tell you to just get a pair of OP's. I have the same black ones a you.
I just got the plaza. Freaking love them.
What model are those tortoise Oliver Peoples 👀?
Oliver Peoples are making nice glasses considering that they are owned by Luxottica. JMM is a cool brand but going down the route of getting too popular and oway overpriced. Their designs are also getting more generic with each season that goes by. I reckon the brand will be sold soon to a big conglomerate.
There older models and color ways where more exclusive and better looking
hey, what would the process be for going about buying JMM frames through eye insurance?
The only brand I wear. They are superlative.
I am a long time collector. Jacques Marie Mage product is absolutely incredible. I own two pairs so far. Most people can't afford them
JACQUES MARIE MAGE- Aragon Antique I want this… any location in Canada 😊
They are insanely nice. You get addicted. I’m 7 pairs deep
Which ones do you have in which is your favorite?
@@nerdbamarich2063 Fellini, Taos, Dealan, Enzo - Squarzi collab, molino, zephirin - Hollywood limited release (and a pair of Roxy’s for my wife)
Hard to pick a favorite.
Unfortunately, such minimal styles and I’m not a fan of any of them
Hemmings and Hoppers are my favorite @@nerdbamarich2063
You are Wrong Crown Hearts.
Sunglasses!! Are More Expensive.
Normally are around $1,400.
They are AMAZING!! Check it out.👍
You mean chrome hearts? And the quality and craftsmanship on JMM is much better than Chrome Hearts. Plus, Chrome Hearts is a fashion brand and JMM is a niche Sunglass house specialising in Sunglasses. I am definitely going to get the Zephirin model in Saber soon.
Yes, Chrome Hearts eyewear are more expensive, and very poorly advertised! You basically have to come across a frame you may like… by mistake!
@@sanjayt1988CH & JMM quality is practically indistinguishable in the acetate, but the details on the CH’s are superior. Also the Chrome Hearts dimensions measure more true! The price of both are absurd for essentially only plastic frames!
What color are this ?
Whats the JMM model, Dealan ?
I’ve had JMM go up in value, not so much with my Oliver Peoples
It's acetate, not plastic
Jmm are awesome but not even close to be the most expensive eyewear out there
Chrome Hearts 🔐🔥
@@Verrifit they are ugly
I have maybach , chrome hearts , VOA , Cartier, JMM , dita , Hublot, Balmain , matsuda , T. Henri , Vava , kuboraum sunglasses. But I must say dat for acetate sunglasses- JMM are d best .
Wait until you’re reviewing Chrome Hearts glasses
I have this glasses.
I just got a pair!
If you have big melon (like me) the fit on these will be amazing. Everyone else may find them huge.
I worry you pay significantly for the brand.
Just NOOOO, guys stop buying sunglasses with plastic lenses!!! I would never do that! I stick to Persol or Vuarnet
It looks good on you.
Jmm are worth it ! But you have too pay too play
….then they’re not worth it! 😂
This one looks boring compared to my Matsuda 10605H which are insane.
I have it in black - matte gold with blue grey lenses . Which color do u have
Nice model
40 dlls its not expensive
Oliver peoples quality has gone way done since they sold the company, nowhere close to JMM quality at this time.
The Gentlemen - Ray Winstone wears these... absolute amazingly cool sunglasses!
Japanese craftsmanship is the secret
they have no history, persol all day, with a few 100 in change.
Young Angela Anderson Timothy Walker Kimberly
JMM pretty much make everything else look like trash.
Plastic bruh
i can promise you that as an owner of this brand, i can say they are great but if you want a japanese made frame thats a fraction of the cost that uses even more impressive lenses then look no further than Archibald London. A true master piece and incredible for sunglasses from Japan. Oliver peoples has the style and history but since they are Luxxottica, they are giant POS and waste of money,.
