so listening to this again, I guess the main thing about Lin's work is "Who tells someone's story? Who keeps their legacy? How is someone known or remembered?"
Sort of - this one is a bit more layered as well. This is also finding your own story and your own legacy since we as a Latinx community are so misplaced or disconnected from so much of our culture. This is truly one of his best works and has so many layers and connections to us all. It's truly so much more than legacy.
@@johnvinals7423 given Kristina Lopez's response to my initial post, I'd say it's a yes. As Encanto also touched on legacy a bit. Granted it has been a while since I watched Encanto.

"Yeah I'm a streetlight chillin' in the heat. I illuminate the stories of the people in the street." It's something about that line and how he came from choking in the heat and frozen to his seat. Excuse me while I cry happy tears.
1:07-2:03 = best fake-out “happy” ending ever, all in a major key, as the texture builds towards “epic” with each repetition of that main musical idea. Inspired way to trick the audience into thinking it’s finished.

Since Lin is Puerto Rican it would be more Puerto Rican/Latino representation. Also since the music is a combination of hip hop and Salsa, and Salsa is Caribbean.
Moved from PR to Miami and now on to build my final home. The line of “the hydrant is a beach, the siren is a breeze, the fire escape’s a leaf on a palm tree” is very powerful to me
The combination of chord progression, instrumentation, lyrics, melody, harmony, character arc payoff and emotion in what is essentially a twist ending was overwhelming for a first-time viewer, and I was profoundly affected and delighted by this sequence, to the point that I teared up again at home finding the song for the first time on Spotify. Musically I think it’s sublime, and marks the first time I’ve ever felt genuinely *moved* by rap. So many details work together here to produce the overall effect. For example, just listen to how when Usnavi is deciding he’ll stay, one piano chord is heard through a filter (slightly distorted), but as he makes his mind up more thoroughly and the mood lifts, the next chord is crisp and in high quality as the intensity and tempo are taken up a notch before the rap comes in. It’s just awesome. Emphasis of “I’m home” through repetition is great, as is the emphasis of the most thematically important lyrics at the end of stanzas: “I found my island, I’ve been on it this whole time…!” As you can understand, I was secretly furious at my girlfriend for not being much affected by any of it…
Also: genius reprise of the lyric “lights up on Washington Heights” (the first words of the entire musical) in the finale, which I think serves the purpose of a bit of a story structure bluff. It sends the implicit message “this is the epilogue which ‘bookends’ the whole story, which has finished,” making you more likely to dismiss the possibility of another story beat yet to occur (Usnavi changing his mind about leaving). Clever stuff!
Genius use of instruments: at 3:34 there is a mellow electric piano chord, or maybe an organ sound, but for the very next chord at 3:37, it’s replaced by a crisp electric piano. What an effective way to score the exact moment the characters realise Usnavi is staying in the heights for sure: the keyboard sound goes from murky to clear, just like their clarity of thought (and Usnavi’s). Sublime!
God I am OBSESSED with Carla’s angelic voice when she sings “the hydrants are open, cool breezes blow” and then when Daniela (and maybe Cuca? I can’t tell for sure) join in jjklgsjjd it’s SO GOOD.

Who's gonna miss this raggedy little business?
What it do? Ha ha, great sunlight this morning
Yo cuz! We fixed the grate!
What did I tell you about this punk?
You have to commission an artist while his rate is still good
It's the first work in my new series
He pulls down the grate. Silence
He hates it
Shh. He's forming an artistic opinion
You did this last night?
Yeah
There goes my flight
What?
Graffiti Pete you're gonna need some new cans
Here's some money, finish up
There's been a slight change of plans!
Nice!
Listen up guys, you got a job, I'm not playin'
You gotta go now, tell the whole block I'm stayin'!
Go ahead, tell everyone we know!
Sonny...
Alright, go!
Yeah, I'm a streetlight!
Chillin' in the heat!
I illuminate the stories of the people in the street
Some have happy endings
Some are bittersweet
But I know them all and that's what makes my life complete
We're home!
USNAVI
And if not me, who keeps our legacies?
Who's gonna keep the coffee sweet with secret recipes?
Abuela, rest in peace, you live in my memories
But Sonny's gotta eat, and this corner is my destiny
We're home!
Brings out the best in me, we pass a test and we
Keep pressin' and yes indeed, you know I'll never leave
If you close your eyes that hydrant is a beach
That siren is a breeze, that fire escape's a leaf on a palm tree!
[CARLA/DANIELA/NINA/CAMILA/
We're home!
Abuela I'm sorry
But I ain't goin' back because I'm telling your story
And I can say goodbye to you smilin', I found my island
I been on it this whole time
I'm home!
We're home!
The hydrants are open
Cool breezes blow!
It's a wonderful life that I've know
"Merry Christmas you ole' Building and Loan!"
I'm home!
We're home!
The hydrants are open
Cool breezes blow!
Abuela that ain't a stoop, that's your throne
Long after ya birds have all flown
I'm home!
Where the coffee's non-stop
And I drop this hip-hop
In my mom and pop shop
I'm home!
Where people come
People go
Let me show all of these
People what I know
There's no place like home!
And let me set the record straight!
I'm steppin' to Vanessa
I'm gettin' a second date
I'm home!
Where it's a hundred in the shade
But with patience and faith
We remain unafraid
I'm home!
You hear that music in the air?
Take the train to the top of the world
And I'm there
I'm home!
We're home
We're home
We're home
Home
We're home
Home
Home
Home!
Home!

So here Usnavi stays thanks to inspiration from Vanessa and her discovery of Pete's genius leading to Pete's Beach. In the musical Usnavi was ONLY inspired to stay by Pete's portrait of abuela.
The real Dominican Republic was inside us all along
love from Indonesia 😍😍😍
