Watched this last night with my family. My parents are both immigrants from El Salvador. They’ve done everything under the sun to put food on the table and give us a future. They’ve always prioritized our education over almost everything. I relate to Nina so much. Feeling the pressure to be something more due the sacrifices made in our stead. God is good through all the struggles though. Now I can proudly say that I will be graduating as an Accountant in August. I am also an artist who writes comics in my free time. (We are human not just money makers). Thank you to all those familiares who sacrifice to allow us to succeed.

@@olliehernandez3934 well, GoFundMes aren't really there in my country, especially for personal issues like this. It's been a tough choice. My family has always been struggling financially because of a number of poor decisions by my father. And since I'm Asian we tend to stick with family even in adulthood. I was determined to pay off their debts anyhow and I raced through life working multiple jobs while going to college and now I just feel burnt out. Finances are thin but I'm also at a point where I'm beginning to doubt if I do have any energy left in me to do it. That's why this song hits just so hard with me. Nina second guessing herself and considering herself a disappointment hits right home. It's amazing how aptly LMM managed to describe the insecurities of an individual through such a beautiful song.

When I first heard this Breathe, I wasn't really a fan of it. I felt like Leslie Grace was holding back in this song and felt scared to sing. My second time watching the movie it then hit me that I was a dumbie and that is the intention since Nina in this scene is scared. Not only that, this song and many others in the movie love to build up to their climaxes rather than starting strong and not really growing much from there. Each song that does this feels like a journey in it's own right. In my opinion, that is what makes so many of these songs feel so emotionally impactful.
This version went from me not liking it, to wanting to cry each time I listen to it. God I love this movie.

I great detail is that, with the exception of when she was reminiscing in the second verse, Nina sings exclusively in English with all the background singers singing in Spanish. I take this as representing how, back west, she had a Latina background, but wore an all-American face to hide it. She even translates a few lines in the song after they are sung. Ex: “No me preocupó por ella.” “They’re not worried about me.”
This is especially notable, because every other song in the movie has the use of English and Spanish interchangeably throughout, but here, there is a mostly-hard line between the two with minimal overlap.

Sigue andando el camino por toda su vida
    Respira
    Breathe
Y si pierdes mis huellas que dios te bendiga
    Respira
    This is my street
I smile at the faces I've known all my life
    They regard me with pride
    And everyone's sweet
    They say, "You're going places!"
So how can I say that while I was away, I had so much to hide!
    Hey guys, it's me!
    The biggest disappointment you know
The kid couldn't hack it, she's back and she's walkin real slow
    Welcome home
    Just breathe
Sigue andando el camino por toda su vida.
    Respira
    Just breathe
Y si pierdes mis huellas que dios te bendiga.
    Respira
As the radio plays old forgotten boleros
I think of the days when this city was mine
    I remember the praise
    Ay, te adoro, te quiero
    The neighborhood waved, and said
Nina, be brave, and you're gonna be fine
    And maybe it's me
But it seems like lifetimes ago
So what do I say to these faces that I used to know?
    "Hey, I'm home?"
    Mira, Nina
    Hey
    No me preocupo por ella
    They're not worried about me
    Mira, alli esta nuestra estrella
They are all counting on me to succeed
I am the one who made it out
The one who always made the grade
But maybe I should've just stayed home...
When I was a child I stayed wide awake, climbed to the highest place
On every fire escape, restless to climb
(Underneath Nina (above)) Ella si da la talla
    Repira
    I got every scholarship
    Saved every dollar
The first to go to college
How do I tell them why
    I'm coming back home
With my eyes on the horizon
    Just me and the GWB
Asking 'Gee Nina, what'll you be?'
    Straighten the spine
    Smile for the neighbors
    Everything's fine
    Everything's cool
    The standard reply
"Lots of tests, lots of papers"
    Smile, wave goodbye
And pray to the sky, Oh, God -
    What will my parents say?
    Nina
Can I go in there and say
    Nina
"I know that I'm letting you down..."
    Nina...
    Just breathe...

As a former over-achiever gifted kid and whatnot, this hits so hard. I cried when I first saw Nina and her song. It's so hard to escape the mentality that your only source of worth is from your academic achievements. It's so real to be afraid of what literally everyone around you thinks of you now that you aren't "succeeding". When you reach that burn out, there is not a more worthless, desperate feeling in the world. "The biggest disappointment you know". I called myself a failure, washed up, worthless, a phony, a shell of what I used to be until I found myself again through other outlets. It's still hard to overcome the after effects of a huge burn out, but I'm doing my best. I barely made it through high school, but here I am doing good in college. But if you're out there and struggling like I did and still do sometimes... It's okay. You are so much more than your work. You're a great human being, and you're doing what you can. I'm still proud of you no matter what.

I love how relatable Lin-Manuel makes his songs. I'm Hispanic and come from a super big family, and I'm kind of in the middle of my cousins age wise. My grandparents on my moms side and my aunts/uncles had it rough, since there were twelve kids and they didn't have much money. They didn't care about grades or anything, as long as they were making at least some money, everything was fine. And my aunts and uncles have carried that on to their children, saying that of course they want them to go to college, but if they can make enough money to get by, that'll be enough. But not my mom. Nor my dad, who had it the same way as my mom. So I've grown up shooting for Ivy League colleges and getting an amazing job when I get older. My older cousins have made it at least through high school, all but one of them getting into pretty good colleges, which is amazing considering none of my family really has any money. But my whole family, my aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone, they've been looking at me as the first one that'll really get somewhere. I'm the straight A, athletic, talented one. The one that'll make it out. But the pressure builds up. It's hard not to just plop down and give up. They all think it's easy for me now, and it's hard to tell them when I get a bad grade, or when I do bad at a band recital, or when I do anything less than amazing. This song and Lin-Manuel's new song from Encanto 'Surface Pressure' kind of describe my life, lol.
Sorry for the ramble, just needed to vent. I'm sure nobody is going to read this, but I just needed to get it out.

Fun fact: She is an established bachata singer! That’s how I knew her first. But I think this is her acting debut which is perfect because she is from near Washington heights.

They both work well for their medium. If we had gotten an absolute powerhouse version of this song (like Mandy Gonzales in the OBC), it would have felt and looked wrong for the Nina we are presented on screen. Theater is more forgiving in that you are essentially playing fully to the room, so being able to really bring a strong belt and sound is important to convey the story, so this version would have felt small on a stage.

I'm not sure if any of you know but the man singing at the beginning of the song is Rubén Blades. For any Latino to say they grow up dancing with their family and friends, they have to know by memory at least the chorus of any of his songs. And I just want to say how beautiful it's to find such an icon of our childhoods in a musical about the Latino community in New York.

I've heard so many people sing this for auditions and never understood the context behind it.
Seeing the movie and finally getting the context? As a college student myself who's fought back the urge to drop out, I saw myself in Nina. And I cried. Especially at "hey guys, it's me. The biggest disappointment you know." I can't be the only person who's felt that way before, and hearing someone vocalize the thoughts in my head made me sob.

    • @seandalo
      @seandalo 3 года назад +16

I think Leslie conveyed the song’s message better than Mandy. Although Mandy’s strong voice is iconic, and did express a very unique and different type of power, Leslie really just topped it off in her own way. Breathe is about Nina being worried and anxious about what other people would think when they find out about her dropping out, and not wanting to let everyone she loves Down. Instead of expressing the power in Mandy’s rendition which came off as more angry and anxious, whereas Leslie came off as more naive and wortied

And here is me, finishing college and now feels in the middle of nowhere. No job, no everything. As someone who excels in acads, that line "the biggest dissapointment you've known" is what greatly fits what I am feeling.
It's not that I am incompetent but I really have this social anxiety which hinders me to do well. Bombing interviews and all to the point where it's been months and I'm still here, walking in a tightrope and wishing I'd just fall if I wouldn't be able to cross the other side. I think it really is the time to breathe.

This song has really helped me lately. I'm a hs senior who also happens to have been the fastest mid and long distance girl in my school for the last four years. I raced at Nationals in club track and became an All-American with my 3k. Everyone expected me to keep doing amazing and run for a D1 college next year. I got a tumor late 2022 and the surgeries kept me away from sports and eventually bedridden for a month, and my immune system became very weak so I would get sick every other week. I dreaded track season because I knew I barely became strong enough to walk to my classes, let alone run several miles, and I didn't know how to come to terms with it (I still don't). I've been struggling with people reminding me of how fast I "am" (aka how fast I was and am supposed to be) and can't help but feel as though I'm disappointing them, even though none of this was my fault. I got covid a week or two ago and am still affected by it and it makes even warming up incredibly difficult for me. I'm giving everything I have to push through even though I just want to give up.

I watch this movie for the third time and when I finally really listened to it I felt so connected to Nina. The first time I felt her pressure on her shoulders since I was expected to go to college (I was the last child in my family). I was scared but now I'm at University studying and so scared I didn't know if I could make it but I trying to do, accomplishing just a Nina listed saving appalling to scholarships and lost.
