Butchered version on the right! What on earth possessed Queen Productions to crop the OAR of all the Queen promos from 4:3 to 16:9 ??! A lesson on HOW NOT TO AUTHOR A DVD!
The original was made in 4:3 so that's how it should be kept and pillar boxed in a 16:9 frame like they do with old 'academy ratio's movies. That way nothing is cropped and left out. Never heard of 'OAR'?
No problem, 'OAR' stands for original aspect ratio, the way the film or music promo in this case was intended to be viewed. I'm sure you've noticed that with a lot of Hollywood movies black bars going horizontal top n bottom. This is the opposite to 4:3 but the principal is the same. The movie was shot on 2.35:1 which is narrower than a 16:9 TV frame but expanding it to fit will distort the image and cropping it will lose content left and right. Exactly same goes for trying to fit 4:3 into 16:9. It's 4:3 cos it was intended to be seen that way cos that was the tv format of the day. It's basically trying to fit 'square pegs into round holes'! Have a look at what they did to the classic Bohemian Rhapsody video on the same DVD. Loads of heads chopped etc. It's outrageous and shouldn't have been allowed for such an important and significant music video.
There's a brief view of the camera in the making of which looked like a 16mm. Not so sure about the one on the crane. I hope these get release in HD from those 16mm negs.

I think they were shot on video tape. I think I Want It All might have been shot on film
I wish that the dvd had 2 discs like some early dvds had, one for "fullscreen" [4:3, original] and widescreen [16:9 cropped]

This was shot on 16mm film, like many other music videos of the band. Only a few where done on video or had sequences from video source in it.
