THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m an “oldie that needed reminding”🤔😅 Made a hoodie, no pattern for cuff and it needs one. Every other explanation seems to forget there is a beginning to cutting a free pattern for it, etc! Your tutorial is quite complete, I’m so grateful!
I have a brown jacket that at the end of the sleeve it had a elastin band and the same fabric from the jacket covers over it. It bunches up. I don’t like the way it looks. It was a gift from my mom. So I’m gonna add a ribbed cuff. I think it will look so much better. Thank you for the video.
Thank you - I'm actually hemming a sleeve cuff and couldn't figure out how to place it on my sewing machine. Your videos are always incredibly helpful!
Awesome little tutorial! I'm actually in the middle of sewing the cuffs on to a dolman sleeve top. I'm using a cotton jersey stretch knit that's the same fabric as the body of the top. For the cuff I just applied, I followed the instructions on the pattern, which is a beginner's pattern, but the directions were a bit difficult to understand and it said to make sure that the cuff part is sitting against the machine with the sleeve fabric on top. Needless to say, it was pretty hard to do, but somehow I did it lol. You're tutorial and tips are way easier than the pattern instructions so I'll be doing the other cuff your way. Thanks for such an easy to understand video 😊
Great tutorial! I have a hoodie I can't part with and the cuffs are starting to split open on the edges so I can't wait to replace them and add a little bit of life to it again! Thank you!
Excellent tutorial! I have 2 cotton/spandex waffle shirts that had too much shrinkage. I can't find any these days they're all 59% cotton/40% polyester 1% spandex. I thought I'd add knit rib to the sleeves and bottom of each shirt to make them long enough. This is perfect 👏 thank you
Thank you so much for this video I was doing my cuffs wrong putting the cuff inside of the sleeve and my seams never match up there always off by 1/16” then I have to unpick stitches and redo. Can you tell me what stitch length and width you usually use for a zigzag stitch when sewing knits? Thanks again you are a life saver. Tammy
I love this, thank you. I needed the math part for the cuff for a shirt pattern I already have (and pants pattern too!). I would "cheat" and sew with the sleeve facing up so I could see all the layers haha. Also, need to know the name of that polish because it's delish!
My sewing machine does not have a zigzag option. I can only sew straight stitch. I have had this cut off sleeve with a amazon cuff to attach to it. I am afraid to try and attach it with a straight stitch. What do you think? is this doable? I am 69 and afraid to even begin. Any advise on how to do this adding a cuff to a t-shirt with straight stitch? August 27, 2024 Janet
A fantastic video. I just did the thing you said not to do and it looks terrible!!! I stretched the material the ribbing was being sewn to. How does a person keep from doing that?
Please explain why you use a zigzag stitch to sew the cuff to the sleeve. It's interesting that when you turn the sleeve right-side-out, it doesn't look like a zig zag. It looks like a straight stitch. Thank you!
Love your videos Tova! When you say to measure 85% and use that for your cuff width, does that include seam allowance? I'm guessing, yes, but just need clarification! Thank you ^_^
Dear Professor Pincushion We are expecting Snow today! I would love to learn how to sew Knit Cuffs onto a medium weight Denim. I am trying to work out how to add to Knit Neckline to a Blue Jean Cap Coat. I am hoping to add a Zipper from the bottom of the Cap... all the way up to close a turtleneck! I am hoping to avoid Turtleneck Hair! LOL Could you please make a video? Refashioning denim is awesome. We all have way too much old but wonderful denim in our closets taking up space! Thanks again for all of the wonderful lessons!
Here a kind of thicker jersey, called patent (not sure if it's the same in english though) is used a lot, especially with children's garments as you can get pretty much any colour or pattern. It's not obviously ribbed, but it has enough stretch that it works.
When hemming a sleeve on baby shirt, I turned it inside out and then sew the lower layer of fabric. I don't know any proper technique for sewing such small openings with knits and this way I found it easier to not stretch the fabric.
seam allowance is already taken into consideration because I didn't remove seam allowance from my sleeve when I did the original measurement of my pattern. thanks!
if you're using a knit cuff, you would still stretch the cuff to fit the bottom of the sleeve. When the cuff relaxes, it'll gather the fur fabric. The only thing I might do differently is to trim the fur in the seam allowance area to cut down on bulk. We have a tutorial showing tips for working with faux fur, so you might want to check it out on our channel.
I started looking for vids on attaching cuffs to sleeves because I thought "there has to be a better way to do this!"....turns out there ain't no better way except slow stop start stitching centimetre by centimetre till it's done. 😂
ok i see the sleeve is right side up. i guess that cuff is rightside up all around ...ok right side to right side but maybe mention right side up for cuff thank you
I love that you don't fill your videos with a lot of talk and get right to it! Thank you so much!
Years later and this is still an amazing tutorial. Very well explained and detailed.
Well explained and great for new sewers and oldies who need reminding.

Thank you for this very informative and well laid out video. This helped me out with a Boba Fett flight suit I am working on.
So great. Thanks for this video, I was wonder how to do a cuff, didn't realize I would need a ribbed fabric to do it.
not all cuffs are made with ribbed knit (it does have to be a stretch knit though), that's just what is typically used. :)

Wow thank you so much for this! I am making my kids some clothes. This is SO SO helpful
this video is super useful and so easy to follow, thank you!
thank you ....i have watched several videos on how to install ... repair cuffs ..... this one is by far the very best ..... thanks again

Thank you for your tutorial! You just saved a couple of my favorite shirts from the trash!
woohoo! I'm glad they didn't end up in the trash :)
I am about to attempt by first sweatshirt soon. I wonder, does the same process apply to the collar and the bottom of the sweatshirt?
Thank you for this video you taught me a few things that will help me with my adventures into sewing!
This helped me shorten the leg on my joggers - It came out so nice!
i used this and it was so helpful❗️❗️my hoodie looks so cool now thank you💖💖
i'm putting these on a leather jacket i'm making any tips for sewing them in something dense like leather
What's considered the bottom half of your sleeve?
I have a straight stitch machine..would I be able to hem the raw edge of the cuff with a straight stitch instead of zigzag? (3:47)
What is difference between leg fabric and the rib knit cuff, also sleeve?
Hi! So I have a bomber jacket that I want to switched the ribbed cuffs for another color. How should I do that without damaging it?
Thanks for this tutorial!! Could you PLEASE share the pattern that you're using??

Hey where can I buy knitted rib material from for making custom cuffs and waistbands?
I love this, thank you. I needed the math part for the cuff for a shirt pattern I already have (and pants pattern too!). I would "cheat" and sew with the sleeve facing up so I could see all the layers haha.
Also, need to know the name of that polish because it's delish!
Where do you purchase the Rib Knit for the bottom of the Sweatshirt PLEASE?? I know this tutorial was a long time ago. Thanks in advance.
I have a jacket with a ribbed knit but it's a bit wide. It goes slightly passed the base of my hand. How do I tighten it to stop at my wrists?

A fantastic video. I just did the thing you said not to do and it looks terrible!!! I stretched the material the ribbing was being sewn to. How does a person keep from doing that?
you can try a lesser presser foot tension or even better use a walking foot. Otherwise, you get the dreaded wavy fabric.
Perfect. Huge thank you
Please explain why you use a zigzag stitch to sew the cuff to the sleeve. It's interesting that when you turn the sleeve right-side-out, it doesn't look like a zig zag. It looks like a straight stitch. Thank you!
The zigzag stitch allows for some stretch, where a straight stitch wouldn't have any give and you could break the thread easier.
Thank you! I rarely sew using knits and now I might try it.
Thank you so much! Your instructions worked like a charm :-)
Great details. I'm still not sure about the zig zag top stitch. I'll have to try it, but think it might not look great.
You don't have to. You can also do a twin needle stitch if you prefer. I'm just afraid a regular straight stitch will make it less stretchy
Super super useful, thank you so much!
Thank You, I found your site very helpful!
You are so awesome for this ! Thank you so much if I get rich off my idea I owe you one !
Just what I needed to know.

thanks so much for subscribing :)
thanks i was able to complete my star trek uniform.
Nice! :D
My jacket sleeves are always too long, so I'm adding a good rib cuff to them. Thanks!
Great idea!
What is a good alternative for rib knit if you cannot find the pattern of rib-knit you want??? Speaking for use as collar and cuffs to clarify.
you can use a regular knit if it isn't too thin and flimsy
@@ProfessorPincushion Thanks. Finding striped ribbing is a pain I'm finding out.

Hello, is the width 85% of the original circumference + seam allowance? Or is SA already included in the 86%?
seam allowance is already taken into consideration because I didn't remove seam allowance from my sleeve when I did the original measurement of my pattern. thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks

I would love to have some links to rib knit cuff bands. I am having a hard time finding some with stripes and colors.

Kudos to those who sew. It's not easy.
No wonder everyone in China looks stylish.
