Mako was the reason Iroh became the character he is. Iroh was originally just meant as a support character for Zuko, but the writers changed him because they loved what Mako did with the lines he was given. It’s most obvious in the first couple episodes of the show, where Iroh is pro-fire nation and has the same avatar hunting agenda his nephew has.
They forgot one of my favorites: Tenzin says, "maybe it's friendly" about a spirit mushroom which is the same thing that sokka says about a mushroom cloud when he's tripping on cactus juice.

Korra struggled with her past trauma just as Zuko once did and come to think of it, Zuko knew how hard it was for him to struggle with his traumas. Korra even mentions that she spoke with Zuko’s uncle Iroh in the Spirit World and Zuko hearing that his uncle is in the Spirit World makes him miss him 😢 but Zhao was in The Fog of Lost Souls because he killed the Moon Spirit in the Northern Water Tribe and I bet Katara told her daughter Kya that story and it must have scared 😱 Kya and her siblings to notice Zhao in The Fog of Lost Souls.
Not sure with the punishment by La the Ocean Spirit part, but it's possible that the siblings knew because Aang told them (at least, to Tenzin) about it. After all, Aang's the one who fused with La, and Zuko witnessed La drowned Zhao to the eternal prison. Which might suggest that Zuko told both Kataang sometimes during break time of a fire bending practice session.
Might suggest that their parents told them about him. If you look closely, Tenzin was surprised as well. I'm certain Bumi was shocked too, but not to the extent that he was scared like Kya.
Everyone hates the Kaiju fight from the Book 2 finale (I also don't like it even though I'm a fan), but it also has callbacks to both the Book 1 and Book 2 finales of ATLA. Korra becoming a giant blue spirit is similar to Aang becoming Koizilla, and her connecting with her spiritual self on the cosmic bridge is similar to the process Aang went through with Guru Pathik.
Sokka being Suyin's dad doesn't make sense in the writing. He loved Suki, not Toph. Sure Toph had a little bit of a crush on him, but I doubt they would actually be a thing. If Sokka knew he was a father he would've been there, he would've been a great dad that's just his character. So Toph didn't tell him? That completely ruins Toph's character.
Could be coincidence but when Korra's vision/halucination of herself in the swamp attacks her, she does so with chains, maybe paying homage to the episode when Zuko saves Iroh from the earth benders and Iroh fights his captors with the chains used to hold him

Aang found a secret herd of flying bison and flying lemurs that are of a different subspecies to the ones the air nomads had at their temples, and then he domesticated them. It was a very contrived plot point if you ask me.

And, Appa looks different than the LoK sky bison. My theory is the some herds of wild flying bison weren't on the temples, and therefore were never killed the the Fire Nation attacked. Which is also why they look different, since they weren't the bred sky bison at the temples all those years ago.
Suyin also has eclipse glasses. No need to read to much into things. And personally, I'm not really a fan of the teases suggesting Sokka and Suki split, or that Sokka was an absent father, or that Tenzin dated his cousin's sister.
TBH I could never have been PAID to sit and watch LoK for Korra’s story….i was turned off by how far into the future they went it,buuuut….i did/do enjoy the references/callbacks to the original show and the appearances of Toph,Katara,Zuko,and Iroh!
