    I feel that if Mary Pierce had better mind concentration,she would be in the books as one of the greats.Top 10 of all time. She had to many mind let downs in her career that messed her up. I love Pierce. Love to she her play the big guns and her winning.Lindsey Davenport is another one I love to see when she plays. These two have beautiful lady like forms with killer shots.Miss these ladies in the court.

    Pierce killed the ball in this match, if only she was more consistent and played this well more often! She'd have another slam to her name easily.

    Great match from Pierce!

    I agree about racket technology. Its created a generation of power hitters because its easier to hit hard. But to be a true power player you have to harness it and do it consistently and thats what pierce davenport seles capriati williams sisters justine and kim did. If pierce was hitting that hard in 94 with a wilson pro staff can you imagine how hard she might hit the ball with one of these hollow frames?!

      That's why Steffi is the greatest ever. She played with three generations of modern racquets, but they were not today's overdone racquets. They were good enough but still minimal enough that players couldn't hide behind them or allow them to mask their true abilities. She had the big power of course, but could harness and control her shots anytime. Lots of tricks, shots and tennis content too, from Steffi.

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 5 лет назад +1

      Steffi's racquet heads were also more standard and not overdone and oversized like many players use today. A lot of the racquet heads after the mid-1990s are just massive and too much. The racquet heads is another factor for equipment regulations. Racquet material, racquet head, ball and even the surface. Too much tampering in tennis. Equipment regulations are long overdue in tennis.

    MP was ahead of her time. If she didnt have so much stuff goin on in the early stages of her career, then things may have been different. And looking back, she didnt have any of these tampered tennis equipment to launch her beyond the likes of Serena's reign, for instance. That was and is raw talent, grit and power.

      I agree she was a hugely talented ball striker and one of the naturally strongest women I've ever seen hit a tennis ball (remember she was annihilating balls in 94 and was quite skinny). Incredible timing. When she got hold the ball there was no reply. She still got two slams though. Just wish we had more players with that kind of star appeal these days!

    Love how Mary's shots fizz off the court...they are so well timed

    Now this is the serve Maria needs against Serena now. She would be able to finally get Serena out of her head and begin to make their match-ups a rivalry!*

      She has had a ton of shoulder problems since 2007. It is pretty much impossible to have that caliber of serve she has as a youngster.

    Sharapova does not scream too much like now, and her serve is sharp like an arrow. But, she is different now.

    • @paskferr
      @paskferr 8 лет назад

      I agree about the serve, and the same can be said about the groundies much harder than today's, she probably had more errors as well though

    • @adamlarsson3828
      @adamlarsson3828 7 лет назад +5

      No..... Maria's fastest groundstrokes were measured in the 70__ 78mph range back in 2004.
      (Serena, though horribly horribly off-balance, recorded forehands measured at 94mph in the Wimbledon final that year.)
      By 2010, Sharapova frequently hit winners at speeds measured c. 75 ___ 80 mph+. Both her average and fastest speeds had /increased/, though they still wouldn't match the fastest
      {average groundstroke speed} recorded by players like Serena, Kvitova, Cirstea.
      Serena's fastest recorded groundstroke speeds are at a totally different level, to anyone else on the Tour. (This is not a fan observation, I collect data for a broadcaster.) Not the thread to detail these, I think.
      Sharapova consistently hit more winners in the late 2000s and 2010s (cf. to 2004__2005, 2006) but she also finishes more errors than on the first third of her career on Tour. For example, Sharapova finished with a grand total of
      /17 winners/
      (at least three being topspin lobs) in the 2004 Wimbledon final.
      Sharapova might finish a set with same number of winners in this decade (2007 to 2016).
      Arguably, Sharapova had to become more aggressive to remain competitive on the Tour. Michael Joyce encouraged Sharapova to finish points earlier and avoid the moderate to extended-length rallies that were a primary feature of Sharapova's game in the mid 2000s ___ probably to reduce the inflammation caused by a chronic right pectoralis injury. This was likely a consequence crude technique on the forehand (irregular contact point, created via varying, sometimes truncated, swingpaths).

    @volvariella doubt about that, both were great player with great strokes, but pierce is too much inconsisten than sharapova..

  • @1welshdevil
    @1welshdevil 6 лет назад +1

    Pierce is so fluid and elegant, and despite belting the ball it looks graceful, Sharapova has never been a fluid player to watch, can't argue with her success, but she's so one dimensional, whack, scream, whack, scream.

    Mariana Alves made the right call, the ball was already past Sharapova. People call her a bitch but she's simply enforcing the rules without apology. Serena way over reacted at the Us open and her behaviour was disgusting for someone with such influence on the next generation of tennis players. I'm glad she forfitted her match. She deserved to be thrown off court!

    • @vosharap

      The calls against Serena were ridiculous, I can't blame Serena for acting the way she did.
