    Hingis was on the defensive the whole match. This match kind of embodied her entire comeback - she could compete well and have some good wins but she was always at the mercy of more powerful/aggressive players.

      Hingis has always been defensive against power players even before her 2006 comeback. I remember everytime she played the Williams Sisters she would make less than 10 winners or slightly more than that, while the Sisters would do 30-40 winners, if not 50. Simply said, once the sisters found their A game she is over with winning Grand Slam.

      hm. you could argue that this was correct /in general/ but she defeated Venus at tier I Rome semi-final (~ where Venus was hitting a lot of winners and winning shots) and then defeated (yes, still rising) Safina in the final relatively simply.
      Hingis made Sharapova look very, very ordinary at Tokyo early in the year - Sharapova didn’t appear anything close to the league of power hitters that Hingis had to face before her retirement at the end of 2002.
      i remember Hingis saying that she wasn’t so impressed, too ....

    • @AlvinNyipa
      @AlvinNyipa Месяц назад

      There are plenty of top players who also has a weak serve and forehand in the past if you can consider
      1) Venus Williams
      Powerful 1st serve but rather inconsistent, one thing we all know about her is the 2nd serve is significantly weaker than her first and also can sometimes lead to numerous double faults. Venus has the tendency to produce wild errors with her forehand too, despite so much power coming from her physical strength and athleticism.
      2) Maria Sharapova - While she was known to have one of the best deliveries in serving back in her younger days, her serve started to wilt down after being injured in 2007, although when she managed to overcome her major injury and announcing her return as one of the top players, she did occasionally was able to produce a better serve from time to time during those big matches.Her forehand was always powerful and flat, but although she changed her racket a few times throughout her career, and altering the swings and her forehand technique since her shoulder injuries in order to produce more topspin and controlling the errors from that side, it has been comparatively known to be weaker than her ferocious backhand that is easily one of the best and can produce some of the sweetest shot in tennis regularly.
      3) Victoria Azarenka - She's not known for her serve and her forehand is also mediocre. It doesnt break as easily as Venus or Maria's forehand but it is the least powerful too.
      Her backhand is always the best groundstroke wing, not easy to break down.
      4) Caroline Wozniacki - She has a decent serve. 1st serve can be great as she can generate a lot of power with the flat serve, but 2nd serve always lacks the power and kick which can be attackable. Her forehand also breaks down under pressure when she's not confident or being overpowered, it doesnt possess the threat and powerful quality enough to challenge the top players as well.
      5)Agnieszka Radwanska - Lacking in power than most of the top players in general. But, her serve is the major part in her game that got affected by the lack of power the most. Her forehand isnt weak if not because of the same thing she's lacking which is her overall raw power, but if i choose between her forehand and the backhand, her forehand is slightly weaker than the bh.
      6) Jelena Jankovic- An almost entirely similar case with Radwanska.
      in fact, these four (Hingis, Azarenka, Radwanska and Jankovic) are all great players with the excellent backhand strokes and good volleying skills. Of course, Hingis has the best touch so her volleys are among the greatest in skills, while Azarenka has the best backhand of all 4 of them.

      But i would say that Sharapove is both ambitious and competitive given the thin body build she has and still winning the game vs the body build of Hingis and the William's who are built for competitiveness.

    When did they play the game, 2004?

  • @LH-uw9ce
    @LH-uw9ce Год назад +1

    This match explained why Hingis had not won the GS since 1999.
    Her greatest weapon was to toy with her opponents by hitting the ball into the court at will without giving them time.
    Even if your opponent is a power hitter.
    For example, at the 1997 US Open, Hingis consistently hit more aggressive shots with lower trajectory and faster timing than Venus.
    Before this match, when Martina beat Sharapova in Tokyo, it was Martina who dominated the court and was not as defensive as she was in this match.
    Even on slow courts and bouncy courts, if Martina continues to play aggressively on the baseline like she did in 1997 since her return in 2006, Kim will have a chance to win the GS after she retires. Ta.
    It's too late for her to say it now, but it was a bad choice to come back to Kim and Henin, who were the least compatible for her, in their prime.

      Are you kidding? You are kidding all of us, right? So, are you saying the players today (lets comparatively look between the current top 10 -as of 2022,23) are athletic enough to beat both Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis, the two legends in the game based on your observation of how slow they looked and their perceived of lack of athleticism. First of all, they are both 5 GRAND SLAM WINNERS for a reason. So, if they are put against the top 10 nowadays, they will still be able to notch up a few wins if this means we are talking about Sharapova in 2006 and Hingis in 2006. Talking about athleticism, there were are few legendary players back then Sharapova had faced whom i considered extremely athletic at their prime and could match the athleticism of the current wta player's today. I could name a few past and present players but lets start with Sharapova(with at least two head to head matches against each players, if she only had one time meeting i would count the match out ) first. Maria had met Serena, Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Wozniacki, Na Li, Azarenka, Halep, Mauresmo, Dominika Cibulkova, Caroline Garcia and Elena Dementieva in the past but out of all these players who were relatively known for their athleticism and speed during their prime, only 3 players were leading their h2h matches against Maria. Bear in mind, the current WTA FINAL 2022 Champion is Caroline Garcia who is still playing the game.But despite having wins over Maria, their head to head was in Maria's favor( Garcia was already a strong hard hitting player with an all around game at a very young age). So the three other players that lead their meetings were Serena , Justine, Mauresmo and although Clijsters had a 5-4 match leads I still think if they met for one or two more matches, Maria would have won their encounter both in straight sets. Back then, Maria was young and she couldnt figure out Clijsters game. After 2006, during their first meeting of the season at the Acura Classic final in San Diego,she found the key to unlock Clijsters defence and beat her game.Since then, she won 4 of their 5 meetings all in straight sets, the only time Clijsters won was in 2010 final before the US Open when Maria was recovering from her shoulder injury and slowly climbing to the top rankings again before reaching at the summit peak again in 2012. It was a match where Clijsters saved a match point, Maria was still able to challenge Clijsters and took the final match to three sets while the shoulder injury caused the worse problem resulting with her disastrous delivery in her serves. Now, Hingis?
      Well, Hingis had a few good wins too but she could almost toyed around with players who are struggling on having their bad days because for anyone to beat Hingis, they need to ensure their performance at their very highest level, or really close to their best and some confidence to beat her in a tennis game because she is a very intelligent player, with a wide variety of shots that she can pull consistently. Name one of the current players nowadays who can match that? Current top 10 players who can play their FH, BH, VOLLEYS, OVERHEAD, PASSING SHOTS, LOB, DROP SHOTS and all the tennis shots that can be named and written down in the textbook, think about all the current players in the top 10 who have no weaknesses in their tennis shots and groundstrokes and play almost as good as Federer, with every approach and their shot selections they can hardly be seen as weak and vulnerable.. IGA? Iga moves well, has a great forehand, fast backhand, but I think she is the only one that is consistent enough to be considered better than Martina Hingis overall. The current players, while many are talented but their mental strength are not always there to produce these type of consistency and dominance at the highest level for a long period of time. Eventhough Hingis was less dominant in her 2nd comeback, bear in mind she was a force to be reckoned with in 1997 until the end of the 2000. Of all the athletic players she ever met, only Serena, Steffi Graf, Henin, Clijsters and Mauresmo could give Hingis the trouble once these legends found their A Game. Sharapova was not known for her athleticism, but her "so slow" game was able to break into Hingis intelligent game with their 2-1 head to head meeting. You are kidding me if you think, both of these two players playing at their peak will not be able to beat all of the current top 10 players at their peak. I think Iga will probably get more wins against Hingis, but Hingis at her peak surely can still win at least a couple of matches. Same with Sharapova, when Maria is on her A game like we saw her in 2006 US Open and the 2008 Australian Open, i still believe she would demolished Iga and all the current players if they are also playing at their peak level. Compare Iga with Justine, who plays better? Who has more variety, who is a better volleyer and all around player? Iga might have a better forehand, but Justine Forehand is her more dominant shots that always opened up the court to let her unleash her beautiful backhand. Her one handed backhand is one of the 7 wonders of the tennis world. Henin has an intricate footwork, her mind game is massive when she's playing with full confidence and she doesnt blink when she's playing on a roll for a win after a win. Both tournaments where Sharapova was playing at her peak, she faced Henin who was also at her peak. Despite their 7-3 head to head in Henin's favor, these two tournaments were essentially the best performance of Maria and her only Grand Slam titles on hardcourt. She defeated Henin in both matches in straight sets, one of them were 6-0 score. Those were those times Maria was climbing to the top of her game and really just improving the other aspects of her powerful game in general until it was halted by the shoulder injury. She was never the same powerful hitter as she was back then,her attacking precision and groundstrokes speed became less superior as she transitioned her game with more defence and top spin groundstrokes. Despite her diminishing ability to produce more powerful groundstrokes, she became a solid defender with a "never giving up" attittude that she always known for by playing to extend the points a little bit more and winning the game by scrambling for each point.Can you name a single player that has the same attitude in our current top 10? Imagine if she's able to remain as powerful and deadly as her pre-injury game, and also maintained her solid court game that she trained to be more patient and scrambling around the court for points, this means that if she has her beautiful serve back, her reverse forehand and make it more consistent, heavy groundstrokes on both sides, a well telegraphed drop shots which without a doubt suits really well on grass and hard courts and merging it up with her new top spin A game that worked better for her on Clay Court altogether, who knows she could have won the 2012 AO, 2013 AO, 2011 Wimbledon and even the 2010 French Open by now! So, do not dare to say the today's game is a lot better and players are more athletic than these two unless you can certainly agree they all can match up or at least better in almost all aspects of the game included to win a tennis match. And lastly, what the hell do you mean their fans will attack has anything to do with them and the today's game? I dont understand. Which is why i questioned your observation and your opinions even more by your inability to write the sentences clearly if you cant write properly. At least try to let us read your comments and let us be clear of what is behind your every message, but that "now their fans will attaack but they are not athletic enough....."? Fans attacking who, are you talking about the Seles stabbing attack from one of the German fan, or the fans are attacking the current players today? It just doesnt make sense to me, why would the fans want to attack these players eventhough they have nothing to do with the athleticism among the present top 10 wta players. There is no reason for the fans to attack the current top 10. So, you are just making a silly statement that seemed at one point as a bit delusional but I need to address the delusional opinion of yours because i feel i cannot ignore the type of comments i believe to be based on your observation, unrealistic opinion. Thank you
