FINALLY done with this, 2 weeks' worth of efforts into a single video, hopefully it was worth it :D I had a really good time ignoring the RUclips schedule and working on the art and quality of the video a bit more so I might do that some more this year... Anyways it's 4am I better get some zzZZZzz IM OUT I'll read comment when I wake up
It's kind of relieving to know that even pro artists can get buried under a ton of layers, make to much random brushstrokes and get confused in their own process. Gives me hope that not every art creation process has to be perfectly measured and planned, that it can make a crazy turn to utter chaos
Nothing to name honestly my layers would look like “bit of the desk corner shading with the tweak for the legs of that one chair on the far left, plus some glow over there” All nonsense layers, I rarely lose but layers won this round =(
Background, environment, perspective drawing is a nightmare. It's like a boss fight I always avoid to tackle, but really wish I could beat it. Thanks for covering the topic with this much detail. And the video title says you can draw This! yeah.. dattebayo (tears). All your effort on drawing and painting it didn't go in vain. Good speedpaints are heck of enjoyable and relaxing to watch
Marc made it look so easy. Perspective is an art fundamental. One of the best ways to get started with perspective is to do the Drawabox 250 box challenge (and do it again). These boxes are in 3 point perspective and will help you build an intuition. If you can do 3 point perspective, you can do 1 and 2 point with no problems. Use screenshots of urban landscapes and figure out the eye level (horizon) and whether it is 1, 2, or 3 point perspective. Trace it. You will build intuition. Then create your own urban landscape, but make sure you use reference. Also, make sure you always observe. That's the most important thing. So, how long will it take? Drawabox can take a while. If you did 25 boxes/day, it will take 10 days. Tracing landscapes and getting comfortable can take 10-30 hours. Another 10-20 hours for your imagined landscapes.
you're explanation sounds very simple but the execution was very beautiful, you really outdone yourself, thank you for giving me motivation to make backgrounds 😭
This is a class I've been waiting for for so long. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed and learnt a lot from it! These youtube classes plus your ART school program have helped me to stay motivated and to get a lot better in just 2 years. So thank you so so so much Marc. THE art teacher (: Also I really miss the Chroma island paintings and voiceovers. The lore was so fun and the environments so cool. I really hope you bring that back again somehow! It would be really awesome!
Really cozy vibes! I like all the small details you put everywhere with the signage and the promotions dangling everywhere. We can see that even in this universe your school promotes your videos! It's the kind of image that's fun to look at for a while and look everywhere like we are a character strolling around in it. Also I really love your little simplified characters they are full of personality! :D I know you struggle like all artists and you say it yourself but it's cool to see a process where you you get swept away by the rendering and end up doing things a little bit sideways :3
yes it was worth it. good to see you using your skills and challenging yourself. I feel many of your videos show a lot of your old art and simpler sketches but i miss these more complete pieces, they are always a pleasure to see
My decisions are algorithm driven unfortunately otherwise I can’t grow, like I’m being punished for this one it’s my least watched video in the last 10 🥲 yet the most work I’ve put in. But sometimes I just go “f it”
@@YTartschool gotta hate the creativity smothering algorithms, to ignore them is a bit of a luxury so props to you for breaking out of the mould. I think part of the problem is that not many people see beauty in creating environments or just find them too intimidating. Most of the art submitted on social media seems to be character art. It's a shame because environments are great for storytelling once you get past the basic stuff. I appreciate you sharing your process! Off to build my own street corner.
This reminds me of the behind the scenes for The Matrix Reloaded or Revolutions. There's this guy that has to make some concept art of the Machine City, the canvas is like 3x3 feet. Guy's been drawing for like the past 5 hours, the amount of canvas covered is just barely the size of his palm. *_He has to fill the whole damn thing_*
Oh my goshhhh this video was one of the most helpful ive watched on perspective, thank you 😭 Finally got the motivation to get back into practicing perspective!!
These kind of pieces make me not want to do art at all. This is terrifying to make. The level of detail that studios put into their works is just amazing. And spending dozens if not hundreds of hours on a single piece is mindblowing.
Just remember you're allowed to focus on just the things you like and it does get less and less intimidating over time, you don't start by making huge giant landscapes of ten billion details, you start with a little world of plain boxes and can make it as detailed or undetailed as you'd like (it's ok I'm scared of it too, I only started getting good at backgrounds when I decided to make a visual novel)
I really enjoyed watching this video from start to finish! But wait, there's more-there's so much untold story here, it feels so alive, like you could step right into it with your imagination. Honestly, what fantastic work! I also love the night theme; it really makes it feel like a living piece of art.
i love the very real thoughts of "this is a bit overwhelming, but then I accidentally added shading" lool and then the oh no, I added color! 😂 Every single time I did that I'm like oh no, well I have to keep going with it and it always ends up rewarding but a lot to get through
Because of the Quality, this video is so pleasant und refreshing to watch. Very nice explanations and also the way you describe your struggles and opinion at the end of the process, makes it very authentic and relatable. Very Cool Video Marc
Fantastic video, helped me a lot. It's also so nice to know that cityscapes intimidate even pro artists; I had to paint one for my job and it defeated me XD The end result is beautiful by the way, I love it.
Just when I think it's time to start dabble in the forbidden arts of perspective to make more interesting presentations, Marc releases a video on the subject. Very suspicious... Now on a side note: I did my first comission, baby! Got asked to do a logo for a punk band , something that could be printed on a t shit and look cool. Marc tutorials on lineart really helped me achieve my vision and they loved the result. So thank you Marc for being an amazing teacher and sharing your knowledge with us ^^
This is beautiful. I’ll check out the Anime too. Love the detail of the environment. Reminds me of AKIRA and Ghost in the Shell. Your piece I believe would also look great in a night time scene, too.
That was epic! I like the end result very much. Honestly, I would follow the same approach, establish the shapes and start painting! Maybe merge layers along the way, but that's always scary, right 😅
I wish I could draw and do things outside the canvas but i guess ill just make a giant size to draw in and crop it after. Either way 10/10 video, I've been avoiding perspective in combo with buildings for decades. Giving this a try.
Excellent detail at all levels, you definitely nailed it! Could you give a brief rundown of what sort of layer structure the file has; what you keep separate, etc.? Also, did you use any reference while working it out?
5:15 yeah learning basic blender skills is probably the best thing I have done to level up perspective stuff in my art. Drawing from vanishing points and shape construction, especially with non box shapes, is so unbelievably time consuming and easy to mess up (for me at least). Important skill to learn and understand but I ain’t going back to manual now I’ve learned how to drive an automatic
Ahh Marc! I'm doing background work professionally now (can you remember the Vivi temple that I drew years ago for the art school stream? I've learned so much since) so I've learnt most of this, but I would have loved this class years ago! Thanks for creating amazing educational content for the community ❤ The paint job on this is gorgeous btw :0
@YTartschool 4:27 Where do you get the ideas for the "big shapes" stage? Why tall cubes with bridges? Is it just vibes? Is that from reference? Does what you start with even matter after the detail is applied? Would love to know. Thanks. I would also really love a video on drawing interiors. Like bedrooms, living rooms, things like that. I guess similar principles could be applied, but I always struggle with designing the room shape, furniture, and how to have it actually feel "lived-in" rather than a grid-based sims house lol
I was playing cyberpunk 2077 and I always loved those buildings stuck under bridges and the cool lighting it gives so that was the inspiration, I just built the base for an open shop that serves as an artschool in front of a tall bridge-like structure :)
U can use 3d programs to make the process a little bit more faster especially in blender since they have so many add-ons for everything so you'll find something for ur project but still as always amazing video 👌👌👌
I was a 3D artist for most of my career so I hear you! but for all the details it still helps a lot to understand how the perspective work to be able to spot issues and correct them :P
Man, this would have taken me x5-x10 the amount of time to complete, and nowhere near the same level of finish! O.O It begs the question, at what point is it more efficient to step away from line drawing and paint in the smaller details? I'm trying to break away from describing every detail first in line with my own work but it's a tough habit to break.
I’m 100% convinced it would’ve been much faster to stick to lines only for everything, and just mostly flat colors for all the tiny details, or simple cel shading or soft shading for the bigger ones. My line drawing alone took about 2h, and 13h for the rest. Normally the coloring is faster than the drawing 🥹 Even with double the drawing time I would never cross 8h with that method.
I, too, get lost in a stack of layers, focusing on small details probably no one beyond me has bothered analyzing even years after I put my work out there...but my end product is still not as pretty as yours Marc. :P
I have a simple question: Can a drawing have multiple three-point perspectives? I’ll explain my struggle. When I draw a room, I want to add some furniture like a Rubik’s cube, a toaster, etc., but I don’t want them to be aligned with the wall.
hoow do you choose colors and render cityscapes , thats the biggest problem that i come to when drawing any type of landscape , it always looks like its missing something like texture or the characters dosent blend in cause of the colors and stuff
@YTartschool the style of art you used in this drawing would look awesome for certain text based online games, I reffer to texg based videogames like shakes and fidget, torn city.
Bro i hate to say it but i feel like all those ai generated pieces i see on pinterest that are composed like this have devalued this kind of art where you put a lot of detail and effort on rendering. I paid the fees. Now rain your wisdom down upon me.
Sounds weirdly sexual 🤭
I love how marc explained these perspectives. Most others I've seen explain perspective have always over complicated it
Not naming the layers in a giant project like this is pure hubris.

15 hours? Rookie numbers… my simple characters take more than that! Your picture is insanely good, environment art is HARD!
It's easy when you start with a 3D base.
15+ hours on a "simple character" is.... not brag worthy, in fact, you really need to be streamlining that process, cut it down to maybe 5 hours.
