It's kind of relieving to know that even pro artists can get buried under a ton of layers, make to much random brushstrokes and get confused in their own process. Gives me hope that not every art creation process has to be perfectly measured and planned, that it can make a crazy turn to utter chaos
Take a look at League of Legends splash art. Some of these artists have over a thousand layers and many have hundreds of layers. This is after merging layers. If you're using digital tools why even create limitations of a few layers? Doesn't make any sense especially for production artists who may have to make many changes when their art director looks at work in progress.

15 hours? Rookie numbers… my simple characters take more than that! Your picture is insanely good, environment art is HARD!
It's easy when you start with a 3D base.
15+ hours on a "simple character" is.... not brag worthy, in fact, you really need to be streamlining that process, cut it down to maybe 5 hours.
Not sure but, i think they're self deprecating about the 15 hr for a simple character.

I love how marc explained these perspectives. Most others I've seen explain perspective have always over complicated it
looks easy, can't wait to try it and cry.
Marc made it look so easy. Perspective is an art fundamental.
One of the best ways to get started with perspective is to do the Drawabox 250 box challenge (and do it again). These boxes are in 3 point perspective and will help you build an intuition. If you can do 3 point perspective, you can do 1 and 2 point with no problems. Use screenshots of urban landscapes and figure out the eye level (horizon) and whether it is 1, 2, or 3 point perspective. Trace it. You will build intuition. Then create your own urban landscape, but make sure you use reference. Also, make sure you always observe. That's the most important thing.
So, how long will it take? Drawabox can take a while. If you did 25 boxes/day, it will take 10 days. Tracing landscapes and getting comfortable can take 10-30 hours. Another 10-20 hours for your imagined landscapes.

Not naming the layers in a giant project like this is pure hubris.
Nothing to name honestly my layers would look like “bit of the desk corner shading with the tweak for the legs of that one chair on the far left, plus some glow over there”

My decisions are algorithm driven unfortunately otherwise I can’t grow, like I’m being punished for this one it’s my least watched video in the last 10 🥲 yet the most work I’ve put in.
But sometimes I just go “f it”
@@YTartschool gotta hate the creativity smothering algorithms, to ignore them is a bit of a luxury so props to you for breaking out of the mould. I think part of the problem is that not many people see beauty in creating environments or just find them too intimidating. Most of the art submitted on social media seems to be character art. It's a shame because environments are great for storytelling once you get past the basic stuff. I appreciate you sharing your process! Off to build my own street corner.
It was nice to see the entire process from skeleton boxes to the final details. I think it stood out quite well as just line art with shadow! Thank you for the hard work.

Never understood why people hate perspective. It's actually straight forward. Its a basic foundation that's sadly neglected.

These kind of pieces make me not want to do art at all. This is terrifying to make. The level of detail that studios put into their works is just amazing. And spending dozens if not hundreds of hours on a single piece is mindblowing.
Just remember you're allowed to focus on just the things you like and it does get less and less intimidating over time, you don't start by making huge giant landscapes of ten billion details, you start with a little world of plain boxes and can make it as detailed or undetailed as you'd like (it's ok I'm scared of it too, I only started getting good at backgrounds when I decided to make a visual novel)
Probably not a good starter piece, but a single building is much easier. Then another and another and years later this suddenly doesn’t feel as intimidating!

Really cozy vibes! I like all the small details you put everywhere with the signage and the promotions dangling everywhere. We can see that even in this universe your school promotes your videos! It's the kind of image that's fun to look at for a while and look everywhere like we are a character strolling around in it. Also I really love your little simplified characters they are full of personality! :D I know you struggle like all artists and you say it yourself but it's cool to see a process where you you get swept away by the rendering and end up doing things a little bit sideways :3
This may be the most simple/easy to follow way I've heard someone explain perspective. Seems much more managable when you explain it🙌🏽

That was epic! I like the end result very much. Honestly, I would follow the same approach, establish the shapes and start painting! Maybe merge layers along the way, but that's always scary, right 😅

Man this is GREAT because you can see the time, complexity and nuissance to it compared to the usual. To me it's like baking a cake, way too good and appreciation worthy but too much of it can be taxing. Also appreciate the effort you put into edition, it does make a difference! Take care of yourself and have plenty of rest every now and then

Amazing! Love the teacher jumping into bigger projects. I think this video showed me that maybe I am overthinking perspective. This really showed that after you get the big shaped done the rest is a matter of putting in the time.
i cannot explain how nicely that illustration scratches my brain. perspective tends to stress me out since i never really studied it seriously but this is insanely helpful, many thanks to you as always!
totally loved this one! i've watched tons of perspective tutorials but this was the easiest to understand as we could see it being applied on the drawing in real time, from the basic shapes to details! hope you do one that's focused on cell shading type of coloring backgrounds in different moods too!!
This reminds me of the behind the scenes for The Matrix Reloaded or Revolutions. There's this guy that has to make some concept art of the Machine City, the canvas is like 3x3 feet. Guy's been drawing for like the past 5 hours, the amount of canvas covered is just barely the size of his palm. *_He has to fill the whole damn thing_*

I found the big advantage to blocking out in a 3D application (I use Blender) is that you can 'twist' objects around so they no longer fit with your 2 point perspective, yet they are still in scale. For example: you build one chair, then you copy it, and not only can you place them around a table, but you can twist them so they're not all aligning with the table.
You can do that too manually but it does add a lot of time.
Always a tru inspiration. Maybe i might have given up years ago if i hadn't found this channel.

Great video! I love seeing this kind of subject matter, especially because I'm trying to learn this sort of environment art. But the construction doesn't really give me too many issues, it really is the details that give me such a hard time, not so much drawing them but coming up with them. I sit there forever at my sketch trying to figure out what details to add, and end up just drawing signs and vents and pipes everywhere because that's all I can think to add, and I still end up with all kinds of flat surfaces that I can't figure out how to break up or cover. I would love to see you tackle this sort of project again and explain more of the detail process.
Thanks! For details just a little knowledge of architecture, interior design and construction goes a long way. It’s almost more of a logical decision that I make when I place a bigger detail than it is an artistic one.
Most details have a function, same idea as when you place a door or a window on a wall. You know it should go there because it makes sense, not because it looks good.

Oh that's so fun the first place you used to illustrate the one point vanishing point is a place in Switzerland called "Le Flon" in Lausanne. I very often went to this place it was funny to recognize it !

Didn’t use reference for this one (although I should’ve), I just tried to imagine what a similar store irl would look like and how it would be like in person and it just fills itself up. I’ve played enough cyberpunk 2077 to have plenty of ideas for it hehe

This comment section reminds me that we all have our place because environments, especially interiors and retail spaces, come naturally to me. I love them! It’s a longer process due to all the objects, but it feels like free decorating to me. It’s my happy place. Characters?? It’s a struggle. 😅

Now on a side note: I did my first comission, baby! Got asked to do a logo for a punk band , something that could be printed on a t shit and look cool. Marc tutorials on lineart really helped me achieve my vision and they loved the result. So thank you Marc for being an amazing teacher and sharing your knowledge with us ^^

5:15 yeah learning basic blender skills is probably the best thing I have done to level up perspective stuff in my art. Drawing from vanishing points and shape construction, especially with non box shapes, is so unbelievably time consuming and easy to mess up (for me at least). Important skill to learn and understand but I ain’t going back to manual now I’ve learned how to drive an automatic
I've done perspective irl by pinning strings into a large table going over a taped down piece of paper. Painful 😂
