- Nothing makes me happier than AI reading all my messages and using them to figure out more about me. But Discord hates us so they used AI to scan all of your messages to determine both your age as well as your gender.
Why would Discord do this? Well it turns out the reason is..... actually pretty stupid. Which makes me confused why Discord had to be this invasive in the first place. However you might be thinking
PS: Discord does scan every single image you send (and potentially every message) :)

No. Privacy laws exist for a reason, at least outside of America.

Yes, age isn't as protected, but guess what, still requires a legal basis to process that Discord doesn't have.
But, okay, if you want to get really technical, EU-US data transfers have been illegal for the last 24 years thanks to a retroactive court decision voiding existing data transer agreements.
Discord isn't allowed to process any data of European citizens unless they abandon the US for a country with privacy laws at least equivalent to the GDPR, or until the US reforms their surveillance laws.

@@Nothanksithinkimfine Yeah. Again, it really comes down to "Am I going to use this every single hour/day of the week?" and "Is it something I enjoy using?" If both of them don't tick the boxes, then it's not worth going for. But again, services vary, so if something that can be accessed is cheaper in the long run, then there's not much of a motivation to pay for something that I can get for free (Music & Video Downloading via third party programs for example, pirated or bought a one time price, no subscription license though for example). So in terms of discord, while it may be tempting to use Nitro because of boosting servers, I just didn't bother with it and used to upload 8MBs files before they increased it to 25MBs in 2022 (or was it 2023 I forget).
With people's accounts being hacked, discord profiling people with AI and this option to let people request this private data package... there's no way this could go wrong...

If, after that, they _still_ had biographical data on me, I would actually raise legal trouble.

I feel bad for the real people who needs to review the content to verify its CSAM. Knowing discord there is probably a lot of content for human reviews too.

The average discord user is the exact reason that I almost entirely avoid joining any public server. Not only are there creeps you have to worry about, there's A LOT of people on Discord that are just downright unsocialized weirdos and have no idea how to reasonably interact with and behave around others. Those people exist on every platform, but I'm not sure exactly what it is about Discord that seems to attract them with such frequency.

@@Cynsham I think that they are responding to the way you referenced folks who are weird (@bronyinsticks please correct me if I'm mistaken) while you didn't say anything in particular, merely commenting on how a lot of socially inept people go to discord, there then usually comes up the question of fault/origin for this, which autistic folks are used to having the finger pointed at us, rather than a society which prefers spending resources destroying schools rather than building them, pushes for segregation within education and work, which results in higher rates of social alienation from peers and thus develop a semi-separate, semi-isolated culture
you didn't say anything wrong, but by not clarifying a base solution of removing that social alienation from our society without deleting autistic people can put folks on edge just because of the historic context and historic discussion around autism and disability in general. it's annoying that we have the historic baggage of really messed up stuff, because it makes discussions like this a lot harder, and I hope this helps clarify common concerns around this that some may have difficulty explaining

discord already bans accounts they think are underage
in theory this would make that less likely because an AI can base your age on the way you speak and not simply saying you're 12. so this would actually make this less likely to happen.
regardless, this is unethical and they should give people an opt-in/opt-out policy.

I mean, I'd've gladly just told them if they'd asked. This is worse for both parties, Discord gets less accurate data and I have my (already practically nonexistent) privacy invaded even more. Sure, they might get a bunch of junk data but wouldn't they get a lot of that anyway? I doubt that these algorithms are 100% accurate.
I think their logic is that asking is ineffective as minorities can just lie to get access to stuff they shouldn't. Which is a sound point but doesn't justify what they're doing instead, which puts a LOT of minorities in direct danger..

because discord was the first to have a improved communicating platform for gamers. Back then everyone was using Teamspeak and Skype so when discord came out everyone switched cuz it was easier to use. Since then theyve built their name and obviously no ones going to switch to something else

If anyone wants a example on how hashing works here you go:
First lets start with a very basic hashing algorithm for words, we can go threw each character and find the letter in the alphabet, so "a" would become 1 "b" 2 and so on. So if we wanna do a word like "hello" we do this:
h > 8
e > 5
l > 12
l > 12
o > 15
Then we can some up the numbers and get are hash:
8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52
So are hash for "hello" becomes 52. And this hash can't decrypted!
52 could be "hello" or it could be "ooog" or any other number of things. So if we wanted to scan for the word "hello" but for some reason wouldn't want to save the word "hello" we would just hash the words and check if they are equal to 52. This is a very basic example in the real algorithms they use the outputs are usually unique so it rarely false flags. Now instead of words we could use images and there you go! So for a image we could just convert each pixel into its RGB values then run the same algorithm.

If more people understood how hashing worked they'd understand how AI helps you create art.
And these con artists going around saying that their images are being stolen wouldn't be fooling as many people as they are.
As the AI literally only reads hashes of everything, and the hash isn't the actual image.
It's just a categorizer that alerts the AI as to what the data it's accessing has been classified as.
The issue, is that it creates the artwork based off that, the artists work; if i doesn't have data from that artist work, it womt have that artists style. The data is being used without consent. If they were using random, black and white images with spots, the AI would only be able to create those spots.
As a reminder, the "don't post this image on discord" attack a few months ago is due to the PhotoDNA database pin-pointing a "harmless" screenshot as part of a CSAM video.
The chances of a false positive with PhotoDNA is extremely low, especially since the database is not just massive but highly detailed to catch even a no-context screenshot from a known video.
Also lol at twitter for not even using free software to scan for CSAM

That age calculation is quite concerning honestly. At first it sounds like a good idea, since the info is never displayed, as it could legitimately help slow down the spread of CSAM, but the other edge of this sword is that it could easily misfire on quite a lot of scenarios. Just off the top of my head:
- Roleplayers, if they ever decide to RP using a character who is a minor (there are perfectly normal reasons someone would do this, that majority of RP is NOT ERP.)
- Individuals who experience age regression, which is a genuine mental condition that is diagnosable.
- Age gap relationships (I'm talking about consenting adults here, do not fucking twist my words)
like, I want to believe that they would take all those messages into account and look at context, but I'm not confident they'd do that, and this could lead to some concerning scenarios that could bring real harm to real individuals.Like yeah, it's "just" discord, but for better or worse, there are a lot of people for whom a significant part of their social life is on Discord. Stereotypes aside (let's have some _goddamn empathy_ here), this obviously includes a lot of autistic and otherwise mentally Not Fully Okay people. I can easily forsee these AI features forcibly breaking people apart and destroying a lot of relationships (platonic or otherwise, as dramatic as this sounds) through unrecoverable bans.

It’s strange; I don’t actually mind my gender and general age being guessed… worst it can do is be used for marketing (to my limited knowledge) or if someone decides they want to find you which is spooky. This is EXACTLY what Edward Snowden warned us of, specifically for government. Scanning and keeping data on not just the bad individuals but keeping data on those who are innocent. It’s completely wrong and really fn creepy for discord to do that to innocent people
If things aren't end to end encrypted in a way the company cannot read the messages themselves i assume it's stored and analyzed and sold and what not.
Even if it is, then I trust them more but still expect them to potentially do bad stuff until proven otherwise e.g. court cases where they literally cannot hand over info because they aren't able to even when asked.

The age/gender thing may also be for the AI grooming detector, to see if an underage person is chatting with an overage person, and then gender can help (i.e. old man talking to very young girl). This may be another use of it.

Treat everything that isn’t end-to-end encrypted sent through online services as wholly public. “Wholly public” as in “i am okay with my parents, employer, police and the lord himself reading this”.
What you get for not using an e2e encrypted service. I recommend SimpleX if you want some options tho. It should be pretty simple to figure out and it's opensource :p

Tried this on my own Discord Data Package and I don't even have an Analytics folder in the data package. So looks like Discord has no idea what my gender or age is aside from what I've told them.

I'm not seeing an "analytics" folder in my .zip. This either means I unknowingly turned off these settings beforehand, or Discord has barely anything on me (my zip was ~10mb)
Proving yet again, if you're not the customer, then you're the product. Been trying to tell people this about Discord since before Covid.
Do you have proof of them selling this? Why does it even matter? Are you mad you cant groom kids?
This is such a complex topic ethically. I obviously dont like the idea of human reviewers looking at private messages that have been false flagged, but im also for catching predators. We really have to ask ourselves where we draw the line in how invasive security systems should be. Also, discord really does need to disclose more clearly (not burried into some terms of service document) what data they have access to and who can access it.
I'm not really surprised why they are doing it, especially after some of the biggest incidents with CSAM stuff on certain servers or even sc@ms. Still, it feels rather weird that without asking this happnes.
It also doesn't help that the FBI has found a very large ring of a scammers from India and Nigeria who are taking advantage of children via blackmailing them to give them illegal material and then threatening to show that material to their families Dr Mike did a video on that.
And I think in some countries you can actually be held accountable for what your users post so this might actually just be a way of the company's trying to protect themselves.
In reality you would think that the police force is the CIA and the FBI would simply higher dedicated people to go on these specific sites looking for illegal material because they're allowed to do it because they're cops.
How does discord train the AI with csam if they don't have csam content them selves to train it
