I think youtubers Nutsa and Thomas Flight have made a good point (although just this one thing won't fix all the problems!):
Wait for the hype to die down - nominate shows months or even years after their theatrical release.
This deals with both Oscar-bait films and films that have some kind of 'cultural momentum' behind them (e.g. Barbie) so that the films nominated can be viewed through the slightly-objective lens of hindsight.

I love the theatre experience. I love going to the theatre - preferably some grand old movie palace - to see these films on the big screen, drinks and candy in hand. Some day I really hope to see a film at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. That's the end-boss. But it's ALWAYS contingent on there being movies worth watching. What would be the point of seeing a film at Grauman's if the film isn't worth watching?
That's how I feel about the Oscars. It's really an artefact of a different time in history when Hollywood was glamour and films were an escape, instead of... whatever it is now... I watched this video because I love your commentary, but I'm not even watching the Oscars. I'm doing a livestream where we'll be picking out the best horror and sci-fi films of the 1930's >_

I can understand the people that are upset about Gerwig not being nominated for best director. It does seem like sexism. I mean, she made the year’s highest grossing movie. It was nominated for best picture. She didn’t get a nomination but a man who worked on the movie did. Can you imagine that happening to a man?
I mean, imagine if a man made a movie that wasn’t just the highest grossing film of the year, but the highest grossing film of all time at the time, and it was still considered one of the greatest movies of all time, and it was nominated for best picture and he wasn’t nominated for best director because most critics credited the film’s quality with its female editor so they nominated her for best editing and then she won. But that kind of thing would never happen. That would be crazy.
What? Steven Spielberg and Jaws? Never heard of them.

    • @magistersolis.3750
      @magistersolis.3750 6 месяцев назад

Sure except Gerwig was too busy patting herself on the back & complaining rather then standing out as a good director.
She isn't what people remember her movie for Ken is. And the design of Barbies costume.
The femininst thing is more rolled at.
Also the Oscars are full of feminists. Look I get it but we know what these people value.
They don’t value effort or work. So I can not take them seriously.

There have been several instances in the history of the Academy Awards where a film has been nominated for Best Picture but not for Best Director. Here are a few examples:
"Argo" (2012) - Directed by Ben Affleck. Despite winning Best Picture, Ben Affleck was not nominated for Best Director.
"Driving Miss Daisy" (1989) - Directed by Bruce Beresford. The film won Best Picture, but Bruce Beresford was not nominated for Best Director.
"Grand Hotel" (1932) - Directed by Edmund Goulding. This film won Best Picture at the 5th Academy Awards but did not receive a Best Director nomination.
"The Greatest Show on Earth" (1952) - Directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Although the film won Best Picture, DeMille was not nominated for Best Director.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002) - Directed by Peter Jackson. While the film received multiple nominations, including Best Picture, Peter Jackson was not nominated for Best Director for this installment of the trilogy.
"The Towering Inferno" (1974) - Directed by John Guillermin and Irwin Allen. This disaster film received a Best Picture nomination but did not secure a Best Director nod for either of its directors.
"Room" (2015) - Directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Despite its Best Picture nomination, Lenny Abrahamson was not nominated for Best Director.
"Missing" (1982) - Directed by Costa-Gavras. The film was nominated for Best Picture but did not receive a Best Director nomination for Costa-Gavras.
"Black Panther" (2018) - Directed by Ryan Coogler. While the groundbreaking superhero film received a nomination for Best Picture, Ryan Coogler was not nominated for Best Director.
"The Dark Knight" (2008) - Directed by Christopher Nolan. Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success, "The Dark Knight" was nominated for Best Picture but Christopher Nolan did not receive a nomination for Best Director.
"Selma" (2014) - Directed by Ava DuVernay. The film about the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches was nominated for Best Picture but Ava DuVernay was not nominated for Best Director.
"The Elephant Man" (1980) - Directed by David Lynch. The film received a nomination for Best Picture, but David Lynch was not nominated for Best Director.
"District 9" (2009) - Directed by Neill Blomkamp. Despite its nomination for Best Picture, Neill Blomkamp did not receive a nomination for Best Director.
"Star Wars" (1977) - Directed by George Lucas. The groundbreaking science fiction film was nominated for Best Picture but George Lucas was not nominated for Best Director.
"The Big Short" (2015) - Directed by Adam McKay. The film received a nomination for Best Picture, but Adam McKay was not nominated for Best Director.
"Jaws" (1975) - Directed by Steven Spielberg. The iconic thriller was nominated for Best Picture, but Steven Spielberg was not nominated for Best Director.

Ironically it since it was 65 percent upper class family drama and it was a modest box office success, it itself sort of proves that people want to see more stereotypical black stories instead of typical Oscar bait upper class drama.

Maybe it's the fact I went to public schools, private religious schools, AND secular boarding schools, but it hasn't escaped my notice that my top three favorite films of all time, Dead Poets Society, Mr. Holland's Opus, and The Breakfast Club, all take place in a high school...which is wicked proof that God LOVES irony, because there is nothing in my life I've ever hated more than school. 2. John Wick Chapter 4
    3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse
    4. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant
    5. Godzilla Minus One
    6. The Holdovers
    7. Killers of the Flower Moon
    8. The Boy & the Heron
    9. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning
    10. The Killer
There were definktely some great movies last year, but given how many movies there are, the great ones kinda feel fewer and farther between, and it's been that way for the greater part of a decade. Personally, I think 2015 was the last truly, undisputedly great year overall for movies. The following year just started a downward spiral we haven't really recovered from.

I dunno, if Deniro actually ACTS in this one, it'll be the very first time in like 25y that he has. He's pretty much been phoning it in since before the year 2000. He actually managed to drag down a Luc Besson film, and that's just not easy.

I only saw one movie last year. It was called Bonjour Ticino. It's comedy about a referendum in Switzerland that proposes to unite the country under one single national language. Of course every region votes for their language, and despite it all, French wins. What follows is the insanity that ensues as the Government tries to prepare the the nation for the change over, while Insurgents in the Italian speaking canton of Ticino prepare to rebel and secede from the country. But wait! did the country really decide on French? or is there some corruption going on? It was quite funny, but maybe only because I've been in Switzerland for 22 years.
Anyway, I've had zero interest in modern movies since 2019, Bonjour Ticino is the only one I've seen in years that I liked (though I still want to see Godzilla Minus One, and we'll probably see Dune 2 after we get a copy of Dune 1 and get caught up)

Was the Osage wanting high priced items an example of greed? I don't know. I think profligacy and greed are different things. While they're often connected, i think they're probably mutually exclusive more often than they're not.
The greed (which let's be honest, is only greed when other people do it. When it's us, it's ambition; drive; dedication, etc) is what usually builds the wealth. Those people are usually pretty good with money, it's how they became rich. It's the lazy, complacent descendants that piss it away on bullshit.

It is a strange thing how nudity and sexuality in movies became worse since the 1970s and 1980s. These are parts of a normal adult life and have to be part of movies for and about grown ups. That so many americans are uncomfortable with simple nudity is for many europeans quite peculiar and has to come from their puritan heritage. Sexuality and nudity can be funny or gross but mostly it is quite normal and this should be represented in movies.
For years I have watched many Oscar nominated movies and one common thing about the high art movies is that they very often have no real story but explore an atmosphere, theme, feelings, social cultural group, etc. The disability to tell a good story is a common problem all around todays Hollywood writters and directors. Even Barbie has no real story and that is clearly because it is a badly written and directed movie.

The Oscars are never going to get viewers back. Not all the ones they've lost. Take the best picture back down to 5. Part of the fun of that format was debating which movies got snubbed. If it's at 10 and the one blockbuster didn't get a nomination you know it was intentional. My recommendation is really take out the speeches. Put them online. Let them do a speech for however long the want on RUclips. OR singular presenter, no jokes just say the nominations and the winner and give them a longer speech time. And cut back on the awards shown. Most dont care about the screenwriters and set design and all that.

I have only seen 2 of the movies here, but I listened to what you had to say about all 10 and I felt like what you had to say was really spot on and insightful, even the bit about Florence Pugh's boobs (totally gratuitous, added nothing, and just made it slightly inaccessible to some people). That ceremony is still the highest rating one in the history of Oscars on television.
