It's odd you say that, because I get the impression that Dr. Grande IS religious. For example, he has a cross on the wall of his bedroom (he filmed several videos in that locale a couple years ago), and he once said he's against the death penalty for "theological reasons.". Maybe he's just skeptical of certain types of religious beliefs or is able to separate his personal faith from his psychological analyses.
What makes you think that Dr. Grande isn't "religious?" Has he discussed his personal beliefs online? I'm a believer but I don't consider myself to be religious if that makes any sense. To me churches are pathetic for so many reasons. Greed, lovers of money, false doctrines, hypocrisy, but in spite of my disdain for fraudsters, I'm still a believer. I sense that Dr. Grande is skeptical of religion, and the explanation of the killer’s actions as just another way to fuel his narcissism is plausible- but it’s also possible that the faith and kindness of his would-be victim actually transformed his heart on some level. Maybe he was tired of that life on a deeply spiritual level. It would wear on anyone’s soul. Very interesting video, as usual.

I think he's just skeptical of the type of Christianity that Margie seems to have subscribed to (the evangelical or "laying on of hands" type). @@lexingtonconcord8751 Yes, but Copeland has crucified Jesus all over again. Unless he miraculously repents I'm sure God has a special place in hell for him. That false prophet has led many astray, which is heartbreaking.
Kenneth Copeland was not always this crazy and scary. In the beginning of his ministry he was totally different. Money, the LOVE of money, got to him. Now he is serving a different god.
Laying hands on him and casting out the demons was absolutely brilliant on her part. I would say nothing else could have saved her life unless she were able to get hold of a weapon, but he still probably would have shot her.
@@jukie16i used to be hardcore atheist. Jesus is the Truth and the laying of hands by those with the Holy Spirit does cast out demons. i don’t think she was delusional. she listened to God that day
@@jukie16 I feel like atheists are more likely to be delusional, but science is a really good logical system and if an atheist depends on science, they are a lot less likely to depend on their delusions. But the sad truth about an atheistic mind is if you go far enough you'll see the cracks in logic, kind of like they can tell the here and now really well but can't explain the why / rather believe the why doesn't really factor into the structure of the universe at all. You need a healthy mix of science and religion to defeat a few of the delusions both have naturally. And religion doesn't need a deity. A lot of religions just find the environment to be spiritual in itself, like Buddhism and native American religions. But one of the foundational reasons atheism is flawed is the belief that scientific methods are somehow superior to non-scientific methods, but they are just as human made and just as vulnerable to delusion.
@@jukie16I think it was a combination of both. But moreso being extremely religious to the point where she was already delusional. I'm not a religious person, nor am I an atheist; but I think that for some people a healthy dose of religion is good, but in her case she seemed to be well over the healthy limit before she came into contact with him. That unhealthiness saved her life as well as others on his path though. Well, that and ultimately her *husband* having enough sense to call the police and have him taken into custody bc her stupid ass would have been ok with a kiss on the cheek, believed he was miraculously saved by her, and let him ride into the sunset free to continue murdering people. So I think her husband is the real MVP here and that she was %100 extremely delusional. I think the lives saved are what matter most. He was unwell himself so that caught him off guard and got his gears turning in another delusional direction that also ended up benefiting her. She got very very lucky. I think its good that his tactic of trying to use religion (being saved) didn't work to get him off death row. "Perhaps" what Dr. Grande envisioned the warden saying when he was trying to delay or stop the process was not only hilarious, but brilliant to move it along and saved so many other potential victims because he was a monster who would have continued to murder and then use religion to "repent" to try to weave his way out of it. Whatever maker he believed in, if its real, could only save his evil ass. Even if he's just ashes and not existing in an afterlife is better than him being here killing people.
Only God knows Stephen's heart, but you have to credit Margy with incredible courage and faith! How many people not only survive a situation like that but cause a change, no matter how temporary or insincere, in the criminal so that he stopped killing!! What a story!

As a man of indeterminate faith, it's always good to hear a story here someone possesses a deep faith and high intelligence. These days people seem to deduce the two concepts are mutually exclusive.
I have taught my children that if ever threatened with a gun and abduction, to TAKE the bullet. Chances are high they will not shoot. If they do, they will probably miss, regardless much better chance to survive a shot than the abduction.
An FBI agent spoke to us at a librarians convention and his advice was to run or fight if in a parking lot etc, because "at least there would be people around to call an ambulance" and you had a chance of survival. He said, "Once you go away with him, you're never coming back."
Same here. Never ever go into a car if someone tries to abduct you. The chances are really high that you will end up missing and your family will wonder what happened to you forever. The chances of survival are greater if you disobey the kidnapper just like the other poster here says.
Honestly, as a Catholic, I am awed and humbled by Margy’s deep faith and Christlike character! While we all claim to carry Christ in our hearts, few of us behave in a way that proves it. I have often marveled at the unbelievable faith early Christians had when they were arrested and faced with man-eating lions in the colosseum and wondered how I would have reacted. Would I have been brave enough to do the same or would I have waived the white flag & screamed “What…wait a minute…I think I mis-understood. I don’t believe a word that troublemaker Jesus said!” Then there’s the Jehovah Witnesses all across Europe who were rounded up by the Nazis and subjected to the horrors of the concentration camps rather than swear loyalty to Hitler. While at the same time, aside from a few brave souls such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer who defied the Nazis, the Catholic Church as well as most Christian denominations as a whole pandered to Hitler in every way possible to protect their assets, their clergy, and their congregations. Although I’m no fan of televangelists or religious fundamentalism, the reality is Margy is the Christian we all claim we are but fail to prove by our actions! It actually doesn’t matter if Steven was actually changed by his time with her. What matters is she risked her life and walked Jesus’s walk and talked Jesus’s talk despite the risk, and that’s what we should all be doing!
Reminds me of the storyline in “Dead Man Walking’l with Susan Saradon and Sean Penn. In any event Margie helped Steven to renounce his career in brutally killing people.
What a fascinating case. I tend to agree that he didn’t truly change but rather changed his narcissistic focus. Thank you for covering this interesting case, Dr. Grande.❤
But how would anyone know what is in another’s heart, who is saved, or isn’t. God alone has this knowledge. “The information is not available to mortal man”. Simon & Garfunkel.
Of course we can't know for sure, but I have seen this pattern with others, swinging from evil to God. It can be spotted when the focus is still on THEM, rather than victims or others in general. Sometimes even in feigning to help others they have an underlying self focus. It's usually bizarre and just doesn't feel right to look at it.
@@BobbiGail In the parable of the sower Jesus talked about seed that yielded 30, 60 and 100% increase. Some people are the 30%. I believe God simply takes what He can get. Yeah, I can. He would have killed them. Contrary to popular belief, having a sad childhood and/or being bullied does not make psychopaths out of people.
Her reasoning at the store is completely understandable. On one hand if he knew she was telling the cashier, he very well could have killed her and the cashier. However, if she escaped, as she could have, he most likely would have then grabbed the cashier and killed her. Then she'd spend her life feeling the cashiers blood was on her hands. I am sure many scenarios went thru her mind in a matter of seconds. She did the best she could of what she was dealing with.
you don't know that, as he had repented and did not try to hold off the police at Austin. God forgives narcissists and criminals too, when they repent .
She wasn't crazy. She had Stockholm Syndrome, and it is a good thing that she did, because it saved her life and many others. She wasn't able to go from bonding intensely with her captor to turning him in the INSTANT she was free, but we shouldn't expect that of her. What you said makes sense but this story is inspirational. Perhaps she didn’t truly change his heart. However, God does sometimes call us to do the extraordinary. Even though she must have been terrified she reminded Steven that God does not wish for us to be separated from him. I'm on the fence about his conversion. Although I think it could be possible, I also knew a person for many years, from our youth to senior years who was a malevolent narcissist who kept score and got even. Let's see if he had killed her children or people she loved if she would have given him her friendship! She must have had romantic feelings for that demon!
“There is a sense that he thinks of satan as a competitor.” Brilliant observations, always.

That had me cracking up
Implying a man with no faith would have some sort of understanding of a religion which includes a personified character named Satan.

Dr. Grande - The really frightening part of this story was the mention of charlatan Kenneth Copeland! Great analysis! 👍💜🌵
Kenneth Copeland is quite frightening, however, serial killers are much scarier
@@lexingtonconcord8751 Yes, but Copeland has crucified Jesus all over again. Unless he miraculously repents I'm sure God has a special place in hell for him. That false prophet has led many astray, which is heartbreaking.
Kenneth Copeland was not always this crazy and scary. In the beginning of his ministry he was totally different. Money, the LOVE of money, got to him. Now he is serving a different god.
copeland needs an exorcism pronto
Laying hands on him and casting out the demons was absolutely brilliant on her part. I would say nothing else could have saved her life unless she were able to get hold of a weapon, but he still probably would have shot her.
I wonder if it was a tactic or if she was religious and delusional
@cheesborgar6925, so you used to have common sense at some point in your life and lost the ability of using critical thinking, ok...😂.
Only God knows Stephen's heart, but you have to credit Margy with incredible courage and faith! How many people not only survive a situation like that but cause a change, no matter how temporary or insincere, in the criminal so that he stopped killing!! What a story!
Totally agree.
To have another person sincerely pray for you with all their heart has a powerful effect that not many people experience. Such prayer is love and Stephen Morin got to experience it.
She was guided by the wisdom of the Spirit, and gave herself to God’s protection. At the same time, giving him the Wisdom of God’s Word.
It served everyone.
Only The Lord knows if he was sincere.
Absolutely agree!
Nope, his "heart" is transparent if you actually bother to look.. He had APD. He is, and was incapable of empathy. Read his letters, its entirely self obsessed. He expressed no true remorse for his actions.
What an interesting story. I was really amazed she got back into the car with him when she could have escaped. I don't think I would have taken that chance, personally. But she took the chance and it worked out for her. Love your videos, Dr. Grande !

Her faith saved her life. And a lot of others if he hadn’t gotten caught. Sounds like he just might have taken on the message. At least it gave him something to think about while he was awaiting execution, whether he changed or not.

I have taught my children that if ever threatened with a gun and abduction, to TAKE the bullet. Chances are high they will not shoot. If they do, they will probably miss, regardless much better chance to survive a shot than the abduction.
You teach your kids that? I certainly would not allow anyone to restrain and abduct me I’d rather die fighting.
💯🎯🔥
Uh… didn’t she lie to the police?? 😅
I’ve seen God transform people just like Steven was or seemed to be. I won’t be surprised to see him in heaven someday..

He knows what we are each capable of. We cannot truly know what's happening in another's heart and mind. The guy accepted his punishment, did his time and even at the end was focused on "religion" so who are we to say? Maybe he did the best he could, salvation doesn't wipe away mental illness or an unsound mind and people can be truly saved in their hearts but display all the traits of the mentally unsound.

That was my thought too. She might get away but only to leave the other person to be a victim.
Crazy she lied to police about his whereabouts, more people would have died if her husband didn’t do the right thing and call police.
you don't know that, as he had repented and did not try to hold off the police at Austin. God forgives narcissists and criminals too, when they repent .
She wasn't crazy. She had Stockholm Syndrome, and it is a good thing that she did, because it saved her life and many others. He was planning to die in a shootout with the cops, and she changed his mind about that, possibly saving the lives of numerous police officers and bystanders. She wasn't able to go from bonding intensely with her captor to turning him in the INSTANT she was free, but we shouldn't expect that of her. She DID tell her husband in time for the police to catch Steven, so really she did everything right despite the trauma she must have been in. Which is absolutely amazing.
@@cynthiaschell7246Really? A person can kill/destroy all of the people’s lives that he did and wreck their loved one’s lives too, and your God forgives?

@@ceilconstante640 She definitely had something like Stockholm Syndrome, as evidenced by the fact that she did not tell the cops where he was. This was NOT a part of her normal religious beliefs. We know this because she later, speaking as a woman of faith, said that he belonged in prison. So she was NOT acting on faith when she tried to keep him out of prison; she was acting out of the SS type bond with him, and it was temporary. She very quickly acted out of her actual beliefs and values, by telling her husband where he really was, so that the cops could find him.

You can mock Margie’s “exorcism,” but he didn’t kill anyone thereafter, and really pretty much straightened out best as one could thereafter, considering his circumstances and past. There is something to prayer and faith, and the world is more than we know.

I think people really want to believe that he changed, and I certainly am not qualified to say for certain whether he did or not. But I'll just say that wanting to believe something is very powerful. I also am skeptical of the faith and salvation that emanates from preachers whose main mission in life is to get people to send them money.
Hey Todd, what about your thoughts on the Lauren Dickason case in New Zealand ... esp from the psychology aspects ... ?
What you said makes sense but this story is inspirational. Perhaps she didn’t truly change his heart. However, God does sometimes call us to do the extraordinary. Even though she must have been terrified she reminded Steven that God does not wish for us to be separated from him. I hope that she changed his heart and I wouldn’t be surprised if other people were inspired by this story. She saved lives and perhaps even souls ☦️
I'm on the fence about his conversion. Although I think it could be possible, I also knew a person for many years, from our youth to senior years who was a malevolent narcissist who kept score and got even. Around 40, she converted to Buddhism and remained very vocally Buddhist and tried to convert me an everyone, ceaselessly. But because it would "bring her good fortune." Lol. I don't doubt in faith and salvation as possibilities, but I've also seen firsthand the angle talked about here, a person's narcissism on display and being the prime mover for going through the motions. The narrative revolves around them, so long as they don't have to stand side by side with someone - or even the Truth - that could potentially upset the support network their narrative has built up by being inconvenient or difficult. Faith is a fine addition for them, so long as it doesn't involve any ambiguity or gets in the way of their having a nice lifestyle (the _actual_ narrative).
