What about building more social housing? A massive shortage of social housing has put people into the hands of private landlords whose interest is of course profit

High quality eco friendly social housing that has highly affordable rents and or part by part rent options for those who understandably don’t want to pay off effectively their landlords mortgage via rent for rest of life
But not simply for young people but for those who work fulltime in south east especially who pay huge rents but have no home of own because rents unaffordable they can’t afford to save for huge deposit . This isn’t simply a problem of young couples. What about a huge percentage of single people and those who single but have their 20 / 30 something kids still living in their rented homes . As with everything in this country system broken and developers sitting on land already given planning permission for years waiting for prices to go up before they build. If these property speculators are ultra greedy land should be confiscated and built on by local council. Supporting infrastructure key , doctors schools busses good roads and not by side of motorways or busy roads with poor air quality

Where I live close to Manchester City Centre, there used to be 1000's of coucil housing flats. They were mostly demolishedin the1990's in the name of 'regeneration'.
The land was given away to private developers who built housing for sale and rent at market rates, this was done by Manchester City Council, which has been Labour controlled for decades.
The land that was given away to these developers is of course now worth millions. I'm sure similar regeneration schemes have occurred in many other towns and cities across the country.
Of course there is a massive demand for social housing, but now where would you build it??

      I see two issues
      A) the Not in my backyard brigade.
      B) The Green belt. England has some hard core laws regarding building in certain areas (ie around country towns etc) which they call the green belt. You cannot build there. In regard to London. Its running out of space. THey would have to build up not out. In the same way that New York has had to build up not Out.

  • @fredkay6743
    @fredkay6743 Год назад +20

It's no good saying "we're going to build more houses" since that's exactly what every MP say's and has said since the dawn of time. What they should be saying is "we will build more affordable housing to a reasonable standard of living", which is the more important issue, in my opinion. So many new build projects are now built with all kinds of problems to be dumped onto the would-be buyer, like undesirable locations with poor drainage, unfinished or bodged workmanship and lack of access to amenities. It's disgusting the amount of new houses built in this country that are marketed as "affordable" are actually finished to a very poor standard.
Ill-fitted doors and windows, unplumbed carpentry and brickwork, shoddy guttering, unfastened handrails, plaster work half done, unconnected extraction fans, unfinished bathroom tiling and sealing, unfinished flooring and shoddy roof bracing. All these are known issues identified in new build housing, most of which are government funded.

    • @fredkay6743

      @TheEternalPonderer Well, I didn't say to a high standard. I said to a reasonable standard. There's a difference.

We don't need more homes being built, people can't afford them. The fact that Investers are offloading BTL properties is what's needed, more homes becoming available will hopefully drive price's down and the people that were renting may be able to buy them.😮

In my city, the only housing being built is specifically for students. Old housing is also being renovated into flats for students.. where is the social housing Nottinghamshire was promised? One patch of land has been standing derelict for over 6 years, despite a billboard saying social housing coming soon. This is not good enough. We need homes for the unemployed, and the less off. Not sky high rents and luxury living for students - who go home every term leaving properties standing vacant for long periods of time!

  • @tudorgwynn9189

Just building houses isn't going to help. House prices will still be ridiculous. New social housing is what is needed. And not through private housing associations who are in it for profit, but actual council housing. Starmer is just a tory in a red tie. I pitty my children's generation. Unless they're born into money there's no hope of buying a house in the uk. The amount of young adults emigrating is skyrocketing because of it. Which will obviously have a detrimental effect on the uk in the long run.

If your rooms are smallish use insulated plasterboard (about 62.5mm thick: 50mm PIR insulation + 12.5mm plasterboard) on all external walls.

First of all empty houses and derelict areas should be revitalised within the many cities and towns. We should maintain and expand the UK's farming industry. Then more houses could surely be built on various greenfield sites. But we should work on the inner city areas first by building on closed industrial areas, opening residential property above shops and building on empty inner city scrub land ( there's a lot of these areas around) Otherwise, too many areas are designated as greenfields sites, but arn't necessary to remain as such. We have too many golf courses now and it's prime land to build houses on.

Building more houses is not the solution. For every 1 property on the market, property companies have 9 left empty that are not on the market. They do those to drive the prices up of each house. If they just wait they can sell each house for lots more and there's no reason not to wait because people will always want houses.
Many of the houses being sold are also being bought by investment firms and other private companies looking for a safe investment, not by citizens looking for a place to call their own. They will either rent it out or just leave it empty for years and let the price go up.
What is needed is a law that requires property developers to have at least 70% of their properties on the market to drive down the price as publicly available supply will increase and demand will stay the same. Before that though, we need a law that prevents limited companies from purchasing domestic properties unless they are a property company.
If you want to build more houses after that, fair enough.

He is on about stopping new drilling activity across the uk waters
This would put thousands of people out of work and bigger issue would be big oil companies departing only bringing more pain to the industry and this would increase our energy bills
Labour is supposed to be a party for workers but we will always need oil and gas for all
We do not want to be importing as this would be a bigger cost
Listen to the offshore workers and do not hit the industry

Big mistake Sir Keir. I have been a lifelong Labour voter but even though it is so important to get Tories out, you will be no better. What Labour must do is build social council houses first. Your idea of affordable is not even close the the prices in reality. His energy cost plans are utter rubbish, it is pointless have green energy if it is fixed to gas energy costs. The UK must set its own prices and not have them dictated by Brussels. I can not vote for this party any more, it looks like all politicians throughout the UK are just idiots, how has this happened.

How to fix the economy 101....
Increase Exports > more money in the economy. Boost this by tax relief for manufacturers in the UK that export goods. Grants etc.
Now that we have more money to fund the NHS property and end the strikes.
Bring back the essential services into public control. Gas (Brittish gas owned by the tax payer). Electric (Brittish power/Scottish Power etc).
Bring back 0% deposit mortgages legislation to ensure every bank building society etc offers a variety of low interest mortgages eg capped at 5%.
Legislation to tax profits properly in banks etc and ensure interest paid out is fair to the saver not borrow at 20% and receive 0.01% etc.
Now again more money generated through all of these services gas, electric, interest rates the people will have better public transport, better funded NHS and more money in their pocket.
This additional income can be invested in updating the school system, and including reducing student costs for higher learning eg University.
So now we have a population that has more money, is better educated has a better infrastructure and better health care. All funded through public services instead of private profits.
Now here is the essential point to maintain it all moving forward. Make it legislation for all businesses that annually contract of employment must include a clause that pay will rise with inflation every April at a minimum.
This means that employees will never be earning less than they were the previous year and will avoid a future cost of living crisis.
Any additional profits remaining for the increase in the money in the circular flow after funding the NHS, after funding schools and public services properly. After all of that the remaining additional profits should be invested in cleaner energy such as solar, wind and wave and accelerate the transition to carbon net zero.
Can you imagine what a place like this would be? A place we would be proud to live.
    PS > Immagration
Secure borders no one gets in that we don't want in (Security) allow those in through the proper channels who benefit the economy skilled labour doctors, nurses, scientists etc or have a proven bank balance to ensure they can be self sufficient and not a drain on the economy.
Allow asylum seekers in on a temp basis yes support them with food housing and health care while there is conflict and then allow them to return to there home nation when safe to do so.
Foreign aid should be reduced. We shouldn't send a penny abroad until we have housed and fed all of the homeless people we have in our streets. Support from a position of strength not weakness. While we are cripped with national debt we are sending tax payers money abroad? If done correctly we could clear the debt and then send them more in the future.... reduce not stop.
Benefits > scrap the system and start again. It's a joke.
Excluding asylum seekers no benefits for anyone entering the UK (Non citizens) for a period of time eg 36months.
Scrap all of the current benefits systems > Child tax credits ( don't have kids if you can't afford them).
    > Housing (excluding physical or mental disability, sick or old, homeless) we shouldn't be paying for people's homes.
Cavite of the above is the benefit centres... you don't get benefits eg job seekers you get a job or a college placement. With all of the above now under public control eg gas, electric, NHS, essential services everyone without a job should be given a position in one of these to earn an income until they can find a job in the private sector.
This could be building affordable housing, cleaning the streets, bin Ben, roadworks, etc etc etc. A position in the military or a placement for further education to gain skills needed to join the private sector think engineering, medical, catering etc .
This would solve the issue of not enough nurses or not enough teachers etc as we can prioritise the services needed for placements.
Bursary > while in this higher education or government job placement scheme people should be given the national minimum wage.
Minimum wage ( needs to be increased to a level where someone can afford to live) not luxury but live. Rent, food, transport and essential services for yourself and any dependants. Eg the national livingwage and minimum wage should be the same. Above the breadline but without luxury.
Childcare > fix with free nursery from one years of age.
Maternity/Paternity leave 1 year for both parents. Then free education kicks in.
Again this is all self funded.
Any additional resources left from the reduction in benefits can be hammered onto the national debt to get back this huge outgoing and claim back more of the taxpayers money to further fund the above and to then increase Foreign aid once cleared.
