Super video Nick, the drone footage , whilst you can still fly a drone , gives a great perspective of the old fortifications . So much beauty and unspoilt

Alandroal castle is another great example of a star fort, which are curiously found all around the world.

Yes, we have one in Cape Town too (built by the Dutch, but influenced by the Portuguese I'm sure).

Interesting video Nick, thanks for taking the time and effort putting it together.
When I see the crane at Monsaraz, it just amazes me how they built these castles hundreds and thousands of years ago without the aid of heavy equipment.

Me too. Crazy. If you're interested in how they did it, Ken Follet wrote a fantastic novel based on the workers who did it in the UK. It was called "Pillars of the Earth".

Also, you alluded to it but with respect to tourism in the area, there is the Alqueva Dark Skies project which I hear is excellent if you like astronomy. Will you be filming your adventures in Scotland? Would love to see some of that!

Good video although I was hoping to see a more in depth view of Monsaraz castle and town but it was treated in a more cursory fashion. I'm not expecting a 90 minute documentary but a little more info would have been nice. On the whole here, your work regarding these castles is to be commended.

Portugal is wonderful. However, the last thing it needs are hordes of more Expats visiting and moving there. Live by the motto: "When you find nirvana, tell very few people." Otherwise you'll ruin it.

Portugal is definitely not Nirvana, but it feels wonderful to help people who are interested in making the massive move over.

And the consequences? Greatly inflated property values, changes in short-term rental regulations, even change to Visa requirements due to the impact of the Expat invasion. Growth is probably inevitable in such a beautiful region. Yet, from lessons learned in so many other places around the world, carefully planned, gradual growth - not what we have seen in some areas in Portugal. Let's keep in mind, the residents of Portugal need to be the first, not last people considered when we set out to "help" others. Note: count the number of real estate offices in any community and it tells an important story.@@AlgarveAddicts

It sure does, but there also are positive flipsides to well managed tourism. So, one needs to keep that in mind. If the Algarve was just existing on agriculture there would be no money at all for the locals. I agree that overtourism is a bad thing but I ain't stopping my RUclips channel because of it (maybe Im wrong, but it feels like that's what you're getting at?). A lot of people are coming here anyway (with or without Algarve Addicts). Also, a lot of locals really benefit from this channel.

There are certainly issues in many of the hot spots, but in rural areas the population is shrinking. As I think you’re both saying, migration and growth need to be handled carefully. Tourism is a different issue - without it much of the Portuguese economy would collapse.
