I think the SM7B sounds close enough that it's not worth spending at least $1k just to get an SM7 that says "Made in USA" imo. That UA SD-1 is just not it though. Fizzy cheap sounding top end. Great vid man!

Hip-hop vocals does absolutely nothing to show the reality of these microphones
if you’re doing spoken word or rap it really doesn’t matter which of these mics u choose
the only way you could truly tell the difference is with a singer preferably a high energy sibilant male vocal
Bruce Sweiden did not select is microphone to engineer and mix a MONO toned sleepy 🥱 rapper using a inside Voice
he was mixing a SOULFUL LIVELY singer
    totally different the frequencies
there’s nothing musical about this artist he’s just pretty much talking with a dry lazy voice and you could do that with a broadcast $100 mic like the PD-70
The reason Bruce chose this mic was to deal with larger sound pressure levels , tame sibilance with a smooth transients & add BODY to the vocal..
People waste a lot of money buying tools when they don’t understand the proper use case..
    Nice video anyway ✨🤴🏾

I came here to type basically this same thing. Not a fan of the comparison used here.
Also, the SM7 sounds great but for the price difference I think you can get wicked close using the SM7B and some EQ whilst saving yourself a search and some money.
While we are on the topic though, an SM57 with the A2WS or 545SD with A2WS will sound pretty damn good on hip hop vocals like this guy.
I personally have the SM7B for when I am traveling. I pair that with a 57 and windscreen for guitar.
There’s no need to get stuck in the nuances of mics when the true major is in the performance itself.

Vintage really sounds better than the SM7B. I really like the SD-1 as well, might get that for the studio at one point

The sd-1 sounds closer to the sm7 when you use what it was meant for. When you use it with hemisphere and the Apollo it sounds even closer I will be dropping content on this soon

I think the Shure SM7(A) sounded the best, something about the air in the top..

Vintage sm7 really sounded the best, much more open topend. Sm7b was dark and didnt fit nice with the track. The Ua just sounded terrible. I think sm7s can potentially work well on the right singer and right track, but most of the time its the wrong mic i feel. :)! Ive had some singers who sounded just insane on the sm7, perfect fit. And other singers that sounded super muddy, undetailed, bad, just alot better with a different mic. It all depends on the singer

  • @CHARAF__

The SD-1 sounded more open and cutting through the mix because of the high boost it has

Ok so its a little thinner sounding with a little high end more, i still like the sm7b better ! But even listening to it louder they almost sound the same !

SM 7B, has a slightly duller sound, SM7 is better to my ears, The UA is like an enhanced version of the SM7 series. Thanks for the shoot out!

Heard differences but all 3 sounded similar enough to know theyre siblings. UA sounded sortve like a hybrid of the other 2, vintage sounded a bit brighter with better upper mid range & highs, & 7b sounded warmest as though it had more low end & less highs(not very MJ like lol).
I like 7b the best for that reason as I find it would do well in this digital overly bright mix era however the vintage sounded nice & bright to contrast the analog era & it sounded the most expensive so I see why many would prefer it. 100% dry, vintage does sound the best but w/ the compression, it sounded extra crunchy in the highs(but then you did add highs via the pultec which it alone didnt need).
The UA sounds like a fair resolve between the 2. I see them as mild(7b), medium(UA), & hot(vintage) & for someone wanting the MJ vocal sound Id def recommend the vintage but those just wanting a good mic for this digital era, Id recommend the other 2. Honestly, Id be happy with any one of those, I just know its easier to make a vocal brighter in the mix opposed to fixing an already bright vocal especially when mixing 100% in the box.

I must say sm7 does have most character that works with this vocal. Great video.
I do own SD-1 and I love it for some uses.

Thanks for this video! Dang that SD-1 has a very nasty resonance. It's def not the kind of mic to high with singers that sing with power, high-chest or even go to mixed voice I feel. You'll end up with a lot of squeaky resonances sound. Thanks for doing this! I'll keep my SM7 and SM7b :).

Sm7b owner here… I don’t think I’m gonna swap it out but I sure do think the sm7 just sounds a lot better. The sm7b is almost dull and nosey (especially once you put some plugins on it.)
The Sd1 just has some “cheap” sounding highs to me personally.

SM7B is the most round sounding. UA is too much present in the Mix. SM7 is too dark for me.
