  • Have you ever struggled trying to match a color exactly? If you are trying to match a color that has dried versus a color that is wet, you might find this trickier than you may have thought. Depending on the medium, colors dry darker OR lighter. And if you are not prepared for the color shift, you might find yourself in a pickle. And thats a big dill. So, join me for a look into color shift and let’s see if we can take some of the guess work out.

Every time you open up a (probably new) container of paint and just squeeze out an enormous amount for a 10 second demonstration, I wince, twice.
But I appreciate the educational value a lot haha

Gouache tip: mix the shades of different values all up at the beginning of painting, or at least keep plenty of your base colour around to mix later. I always mix a dark shade, paint it on and then notice it's dried to invisible, because I was mixing to match the dried shade

Thanks. As a guy who started w/ watercolor and now doing acrylic too, I really need to get control of the shift!

The north remembers your shipping to Canada is still prohibitively expensive. What's the use of a 50% off sale if you have to pay 100% in shipping?

As alway informative AND fun! Nay sayers are welcome to shift gears and skidoodle to a droll, informative only video, but be warned, most droll videos don't cover the amount of issues that Mike and company cover!

Can't say I've had many color shift issues. Probably because I was aware of it before painting :) I've used acrylics, watercolor and gouache several times, and oil once

I really wanted to love gouache because of the texture and working properties, but the color shift effect is *infuriating* as a realism painter!

Mike I would be really interested to know if color shift in acrylics is effected by using a blow dryer with hot air to speed the drying time, more than cool air or letting it dry on it's own. Love your show!! Always so informative.

Hi Wendi, to answer your question, using a blow dryer with acrylics is not advised, but not because of color shift. When you use a hair dryer, it dries the outer layer of the paint first, leaving wet paint essentially trapped underneath. This leads to issues with cracking or shrinking. Hope this helps!

Have you tried the W&N new formula acrylic paint? They claim that the polymer is now clear when wet so now there's no or a very minor colour shift.

I have not personally tried it yet, but from what I have been told it still has a bit of a color shift, but to a lesser degree.
