    Thank you for making this documentary! Rode through this tunnel via freight without knowing how serious this tunnel actually was. Took nearly 40 minutes of breathing diesel fumes and complete darkness before obtaining a breath of fresh air. Really cool to know the history and hardships that came with its construction. Sure does have a creepy, haunted presence. Great job!

    I walked by the west portal on a hike home from Drury high school around 2004. Such an impressive engineering project. North Adams had a ton of industry back in the 19th and 20th centuries.. I think that was a big incentive to build the tunnel too. Thanks for the upload, I learned quite a bit!

    Good series. I walked the tunnel from East to West with a group of chemist friends from MIT in 1974. We had lunch in the "Hoosac Hotel" at the half way point. One train passed going from West to East. Lots of diesel fumes :-( We had dinner at McDonalds in N Adams and then got a cab back to the East portal to pick up our car.

      I've lived in Berkshire County all my life. You did a fine job on your film. Anybody would learn something from it. Using the electrics to help the steam locomotives makes perfect sense. As many died building the tunnel. God rest their souls. It's a good thing technology got a bit better or they may have abandoned the entire thing. I walked the tunnel over 30 years ago when I was a kid. It's dangerous and not a place to fool around.

    I love this series! I grew up in North Adams and my dad and I used to walk from where the woods began at Windsor Lake up over blueberry hill and to the west portal and watched many trains go though there. We did go in a few times but just a few feet because we obviously didn't want to get caught in there when a train came though. I know there was one time in I believe it was the 1980's where they did a special passenger train in North Adams that went through the tunnel and back which I was lucky enough to go on. I would love to see them have some excursion trains through the tunnel if not on an ongoing basis at least like once a year or something like that.

    • @Imrfilms
      @Imrfilms  10 лет назад

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked the series and thanks for the comment! That's cool you were able to ride the excursion. I was given a video which contains footage of an excursion from a while ago. (Old VHS stuff!) I wonder if it's the same one? I know people have asked about doing public excursions now, but Pan Am and Norfolk are kind of strict with rules.

    I worked with a fellow who had retired from the train business but became a bus driver at the GMTA in Greenfield, MA.
    His name, yes, was Jesse James.
    He was on a train one time coming through the tunnel when the crew saw a red lantern uphead on the tracks.
    They stopped their train.
    Just so people know, there is no radio communication inside the tunnel as it is too far underground for reception.
    He walked the tracks ahead and found a train that had broken down inside the the tunnel.
    He walked up to the crew on that one and thanked them for sending someone back with a red lantern to warn the train he was working and avoided a collision.
    The other crew never sent anyone back though.
    Whomever, or whatever, may be in there is looking out for the rest that work that line.
    I knew this man for 12 years until his passing.
    He was not a fabricator of tall tales.
    I believed him then and, even though he is gone now, I would never doubt what anything thing he ever said.
    Including what I posted here.
    He was a very good and honest man.

    Just a few questions. On the east portal side, to the right of the entrance, what is that area of water, is it part of the building process? I also saw a date on the top of the tunnel entrance in this that says 1824, is there a reason for that? Where is the short 300 foot tunnel going across route 2? Is it easily seen if coming down from the hairpin turn?

    • @Imrfilms
      @Imrfilms  4 года назад

      Hi Todd, thanks for the questions! If you follow the stream on the right of the East portal about a quarter of a mile up, you'll find an old dam where two waterfalls meet. This was used as a reservoir to provide clean water to the workers and their families at the East side. Part 04 has a little info on this.
      The date on the entrance is 1877 (unless there's another date I'm unaware of). This is the date that the portal facade was built.
      As for the Rt. 2 tunnel, you can't see that from the hairpin. If you go to the Heritage State Park, there's a little pedestrian bridge which crosses the tracks. You can see the tunnel from there. I have a ride through video of that one as well if you're interested.
      Thanks for posting!

      @@Imrfilms OK, thanks for getting back quickly. On the date, not sure if part 4 maybe but when it shows one of the electric trains heading into the tunnel, it says Hoosac and 1824. Unless I'm seeing that wrong but it looks like that year.

    For those questioning the number of deaths, many were Irish workers at the start and once too many died the Chinese workers got the deadliest jobs.
    Back then, birth records weren't all that accurate.
    I would say it was about 130 total from talking to many who knew the history of what it took in human lives.
