      My instructor made me do my very first open water session in the sea (shore dive) right after finishing my pool session. My biggest challenge was the exhaustion. I should've asked to do the shore dive on another day, but I just want to get it over with quickly - aaaand this is a wrong move. Having spent more than 3 hours in the pool, had a quick lunch, and straight to the sea, it's damn exhausting, not to mention it was my first time having to carry a tank on my back and walk to the water from the van. So I didn't enjoy my first open water dive. Underwater I still had to do all the skills, removing mask, taking off the BCD, etc.etc. I got cramps on my leg. It was not pleasant. My only motivation was that I've paid good money for it so I forced myself to do everything my instructor asked. But then after my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th open water dive, I was able to enjoy the underwater world, not having to think too much, not exhausted, aaaand I got addicted, and here I am, as a diver.... check out my channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCDsXOSc8sDmBSI7DcrL5h7g?view_as=subscriber

      I found this is quite often the case with cheaper courses, who try and complete the pool and open water dives in two days rather than three. I would alwaysss advise for people to take their time and do the whole course in four days rather than three or even two! This allows people to take their time and avoid exhaustion. Which can be one of the biggest precursors to panic!
      Thanks for checking out the video. Congratulations for becoming a diver. Love having you in the family :)

      My biggest problem was another diver that was always 6inches away from me and wouldnt unstick himself from me, he wasnt my buddy, and one time he even spun over me and hit me on the back of the head with his tank, stunning me for at least 10 seconds, during our 3rd dive, 1st night dive. Luckily, i grew up in the water, and was lifeguard.

    Hello I am 52 years old and I live in Greece. My biggest fear was even just the thought of being underwater. I was claustrophobic and never put my head underwater. 1 day I thought nooo wayyy , I cant live in Greece and not enjoy the sea..but what about my fear for the water ?? so I thought I need to overcome my fears and the way I thought best is SCUBA DIVING LESSONS . I was very lucky to have my discovery dive at a great diving school and my instructor was excellent. He was very patient with me and explained everything over and over again. I am completing the open water training next week and am proud to say that I managed to do all the exercises and guess what ... I am not claustrophobic anymore. A serious diving school and properly trained instructors helped me overcome my fears and be able to enjoy a new world underwater. Next goal a trip to Thailand or Bali and diving to see corals !!!!! Regardless age and fears we can do anything we put our mind to !!!

    My tip before taking a scuba course is being comfortable in the water. This helped me a lot. You don't necessarily need to be a great swimmer for the basic certification. Also, take your time in your movements. There is no point to rush anything. Also, if you CANNOT find your primary regulator after two tries, just grab, insert, clear and breath through you secondary regulator.

    • @roxanne8662
      @roxanne8662 Год назад

      During the 'out of air' exercise where i used my buddys alternate regulator, i gave them the regulator back before i had my own primary ready. And when i couldn't find it, i grabbed my own spare regulator and took my time finding my primary. Funnily enough, i wasnt the only one in the class to give back the regulator before securing my own.

    When i first did my open water course, i watched the videos the week before doing it. And i told my instructor when we started, i wasnt sure if i could do the mask removal skill, because it looked so hard in the video. So after every single skill we did, she said ok lets do the mask removal again. So by the end of the pool portion I had done the mask removal like 15-20 times. And i mastered it that day. And now that im an insturctor i do that with ny students that are afraid of the mask removal 🙂

    I’m not a diver yet, but I’m so ready to learn. I snorkeled in the Bahamas about 20 years ago, and the initial breathing was weird at first, as I learned to trust the snorkel and learn to swim with it and breathe with it, but once I did it was sooooooo much fun. Right then and there I knew I had to learn to scuba dive. Fast forward years due to “life” and me and my son I think will do it. I’m trying to get him off his iPad and show him all the cool and wonderful stuff there is to do outdoors.

I was scared but really happy I didn’t lost my buddy . But after that I kind of freaked out a little and felt like i couldn’t get enough air . My instructor later told me not to worry about that . I did really good the other times and already mastered the mask skill and the regulator skill. But after this experience yesterday I’m kind of nervous to go down today . Wish me luck 🍀☺️

    wow. I wish I watched this 48 hours ago. I went to do my first pool session for the open water certificate yesterday and literally the first two fears really affected me. Being asthmatic on top of it contributed to me panicking which led to me being short of breath and having to call the session short. Luckily the dive centre I was at was very comprehensive and did not pressure me at all and offered to reschedule once I felt more comfortable. Will definitely try to practice this skill with a snorkel before going back again. I really want to get a grasp of it so I can start diving :)

We were at a depth of around 24 ft when I tried inflating my bc and I guess I did too much that I began to ascend quickly but because of my vertigo mixed with horrible visibility I felt as if we were in a whirlpool and felt so dizzy, when we surfaced I thought we were just in a storm of some sort but it was just because I accidentally inflated my bc and ascended quickly

    Mask clearing is my hardest skill :,) and I thought I was the only abnormal one cos everyone could do it with ease. I had a panic Attack when I couldn’t clear my mask and water went up my nose and I suddenly couldn’t breathe (nth to do with regulator i still had air source but just panic mode)
    I got a Low volume mask now and I’m trying to practice it very often now but I’m just so uncomfortable with water being in my mask and being okay with water surrounding my eyes and going into my nose

      Hello! Same problem here. I found a way to manage it, slowly. I went to my swimming pool just with my mask and snorkel, being the snorkel detached from the mask. Then I went just below water with my head and started practicing. It is even worth practicing with you snorkel only, breath through the mouth, put your face under water and get used to, breath in through your mouth, breathe out with you nose. Slowly, over and over. Then try with the mask, it worked good for me to be on my own and take it really slow. Hope it works for you and all others who have this fear.

I got water up my nose and had to plug my nose the whole time. I got it done and was able to accomplish them all but it took more than once. I found that plugging my nose helped me to calm down and breath through the regulator easier because unfortunately I can't seem to figure out that I can breath through my mouth without my nose lol. • @scottrichter341
    @scottrichter341 4 года назад +1

    Quite honestly, the water shooting up my nose is my biggest worry. That's when I feel like I'd panic. I can deal with sharks and not having the regulator in my mouth. The ocean seems terrifying, especially up here in the Pacific Northwest where it's all dark and cold. But yeah, I don't water up my nose.
    My second concern, not so much a fear, is sipping air through a free flowing regulator.
    Hoping to take a course this year!

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  4 года назад

      The key to sipping through a free flowing regulator : is to not press the button all the way down. When your regulator starts to free flow, it will start doing so SLOWLY not in this massive pressure :)

    • @scottrichter341
      @scottrichter341 4 года назад

      @@OceanPancake Thanks for the reply and advice! Still worried about the water up the nose thing. I think it's mainly happening though because when I practice it in a 5ft pool I have to try and keep my body from floating up while trying to control the snorkel in one hand to continue breathing, while removing the mask. Maybe when I get to start the class it'll be easier being properly buoyant and with a regulator rather than juggling everything around at the surface of a shallow pool.
      I've started the ePADI learning thing online and I'm pretty comfortable with the knowledge and what I'll have to be able to do... It's just that damned water clogging my nose making me want to cough.

If a White Shark tags you - their size & power is generally fatal. This is why station surfers are at risk. But i agree with you - sharks are wondrous & amazing - and not that common. Bulls & Tigers can be bullies, Whites frightening and the rest good company

    Evening, I just subscribed to your channel. I’m new to diving. I’ve done my pool time. May I’m doing my beach and boat dives. My fears or concerns is navigating and “getting lost.” I am excited though in this new adventure. I also didn’t realize how many people I know that scuba dive.

    I did my ow in the UK .the water there is a little chilly Feb March time when I did mine .I had to take my mask off at the end of the dive .hands and face so cold I could feel anything.i could feel I had replaced and cleared my mask because it was so cold .it was the instructor tapping my shoulder alerting me I had done it .I'm now doing my DM course but on hold at the mo because of covid restrictions.I still don't like mask removal but it's not a problem anymore as it become a natural reaction to fix the problem

    Thank you so much for this video, it was just what I needed! I’m contemplating a live aboard holiday in the Red Sea this fall and am quite apprehensive about the possibility of shark encounters.. Also, even though I’m an AOWD with 40-50 dives I’m never quite at ease in the beginning of a dive holiday.. It was really nice to be reminded that I’m not alone feeling this way and watching this video reassured me how normal these fears are and how to deal with them. Thanks you! Wish you could be my dive instructor 😊💙

I got some time in the pool and just swum around at the surface without my diving mask. The last step was taking off my mask. Afterwards I was so happy. So step by step I just did it! I'm still scared diving outside the swimming pool but if it would be easy everyone would do it, right :p

    I had a situation that happened a few years after I go certified... so I went on a dive carter..the water was getting rough, and the site was at 90ft... well it took me forever to get down there, I had a hard time getting my ears to equalize.. when I got down to 80ft, I just started floating up.. Luckily I was by the rope.. so I held on the rope... when I got back on the boat the bcd was malfunctioning, it was filling up with air...... so that dive was a little scary and stressful too. I didn't go on the second dive because of that...

    • @OceanPancake
      @OceanPancake  5 лет назад +1

      That would have been a very scary situation! I am very happy you are okay. Gear malfunctioning is unfortunate and can sometimes happen. Your instructor should have been nearby ready to take charge if anything. This is also why I think it's important to prioritise more expensive courses where the standards of equipment etc can be higher and classes smaller.

    I’m not a diver yet. What’s stopped me is kids cost so dam much money. Now my kids are out of the house and paying for themselves, so now I can work on getting certified.
    There’s only one reason I want to get dive certified. I want to go shark diving at tiger beach and or Guadalupe island. I think sharks are some of the coolest creatures on earth and tigers and great whites are my favorites. I’ve been interested in sharks ever since I saw the movie jaws when I was a kid after seeing it I tried to learn as much as I could and realized that attacks are very rare. This also lead to an interest in large predators on land also. I just really like animals that could look at us and think Mmm lunch. Yes I know they don’t but the idea that they could fascinates me for some reason.

And I also had a problem clearing my mask after it flooded because of my lenses was on. But my instructor told me to descend despite all the problems mentioned which was bad because as I said I keep wanting to go to the surface ( I kept thinking what if I went down and wanted to go to the surface because I got water in my mask). that was a mess 😂😭😭 should I try it again or just drop the whole thing ? I think becoming a proficient swimmer would help to set you up for success because in order to swim you need breath control and learn how to keep water out of your nose while being under water and and without touching your nose. Then you could try to learn the skills with an instructor step by step slowly at your pace and at the depth you feel comfortable.
