I was 6 years old when American Idiot came out. My dad (rest his soul) used to be the drummer in cover bands and those bands would play this song. He introduced me to Green Day with this song. Though I’ve listened to Green Day’s entire music catalog (which all of it is great), this song is, has and always will be my favorite Green Day song of all time. If it wasn’t for both this masterpiece and my dad, I don’t think I would’ve ever gotten into the beautiful band that is, Green Day. I still miss you dad.

I’m a man and i prefer to be alone. All of my friends are dead. I’ve never had a serious relationship with a woman. I spend most of my time at my house here in the middle of the woods in Pennsylvania. My closest neighbor is a mile from me. I’ve been angry all my life. That anger prevents me from ever having a meaningful relationship. I’m more afraid of myself than anything else out here. I mean think about it. An unstable angry person in a relationship with someone. What if i got angry at them and lost control. I’ve found solitude and meditation and quiet to be the best cure. I’ve found peace here. This was the first song I heard from Green Day in 2012 when I was only 5. I remember always looking forward hearing this in the car radio. I’ve known the band since then but never listened to it more for some dumb reason. In around 2018 or 2019 my siblings started playing this to me again and I remember falling in love with it again. Only last year I started listening to them more. At first I stuck with listening to Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Kill The Dj and Hitchin’ a Ride. Later on I listened to the whole AI album, then Nimrod, Uno Dos Tre trilogy, Warning, Foamf, Dookie and 21st century breakdown. Still have a lot to go but I’ve loved the entire GD discography so far. Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are still my favs. ❤️
I reckon that there's a time in all of our lives when we can all relate to this. The song came out in my final year at university, and at the time I thought it was cool but didn't massively relate. I dont really ever listen to this, or American Idiot. I've always heard, and known the words to them. But when I was starting out, I thought they were legendary songs and had them on loop as I did EVERYTHING. I've only listened to the entire album (Including American Idiot & Boulevard of Broken Dreams) once. Today I saw a comment on Homecoming that made me have a completely different view on the album! It was explaining each song, for example, JOS, Jesus of Suburbia is Jimmy's hometown and about how he left it. Holiday would be him running around, doing whatever. But on St. Jimmy, Jimmy becomes a new person. St. Jimmy is who he is now. She's a Rebel is basically St. Jimmy meeting Whatsername. If we skip Extraordinary Girl, we get Letterbomb. A letter Whatsername sent to Jimmy, telling him he was never the JOS or St. Jimmy. Wake Me Up When September Ends is about St. Jimmy changing back to his old self, and Billie Joe's father that died of cancer in September. Homecoming is too important to leave out, so Homecoming. This song has five parts, so they're like chapters: Jesus of Suburbia has nothing left to do. He's been on the streets. He stands alone again. So where else to go? Home. Part 1, the Death of St. Jimmy. He's leaving the streets, he's going back, he's leaving Jimmy behind. He realizes that turning away wasn't the answer, and he's gained nothing from it except knowledge that life is no better in a different atmosphere. He hoped for too much, and got nothing in return. St. Jimmy kills himself, in a sense, in Jesus of Suburbia's mind, he's gone. Still, there's no one who cares, and nobody cares. Jimmy still is here, but he is back to being himself. Part 2, East 12th St. It tells us that Jesus of Suburbia got a job, and is just in his own world as people move around him. He'd rather be out and around with 'the underbelly', his friends. He feels trapped. Alone, and again, must get away. "This lifelike dream ain't for me" Part 3, Nobody Likes You. He's still depressed about losing Whatsername, as he waits for her to return, but no luck. All of his dreams at this point are shot down as her voice still pounds in his head "NOBODY LIKES YOU, EVERYONE LEFT YOU..." Part 4, Rock 'N Roll Girlfriend. In the inlay, is shown as a postcard from "Tunny," who seems to be a person Jesus of Suburbia met while on the streets. Tunny explains that he's living it up where he is, and the rebel life he leads, while Jesus Of Suburbia is rotting with his dead end job, in his dead end life. Part 5, We're Coming Home Again. It is Jesus of Suburbia accepting things. He's coming to the realization of everything and everyone, and is just accepting it. He comes home. It's left on a confusing note. Well yeah. It is a concept album. The whole point is that it tells a cohesive story. You wouldn't know this if you only listened to the hits or didn't pay attention to the lyrics. It is in the same type of album as The Wall, Tommy, Operation Mindcrime, and Hadestown.

I started getting hooked on green day living in southeast Alabama in 2004. Every Wednesday I watched Laguna Beach and after every episode I heard a green day song from American idiot album. These songs sounded so awesome I couldn't get it out of head and grew up a country music fan. 2004 was such a great year in pop culture. I listened to Green Bay for 4 yrs and stopped for 16 years but then I heard of savior tour on morning mash up. I started going through a rigorous diet listening to green day on my bike. I went back to 2004 green day. I love listening to them especially this album. Best decision I made this year.
So one day me and my friends when we walked to and from school and realized that our elementary school, middle school and our highschool is on one road so now we call the road the boulevard of broken dreams and I listen to this whenever I walk home alone

I hate how long it took for me to find this song because after hearing it for the first time, i realized that this song perfectly describes me and my childhood. I grew up as the weird kid at school who was dealing with verbal and emotional abuse at home which also came with some physical as well. I felt so alone and misunderstood for all of my childhood until my mom started getting help and homeschooled me in the 11th grade. Before then, it felt like everyone wanted me to be what they wanted and didn't care about who I wanted to be or who I was inside. it got to the point where i said "fuck everyone and their issues" and became more inteovered and apathetic. When i listen to this song, i see and feel that hurting and lost child who just wanted to feel like he belonged no matter what he was like or what he liked.

I reckon that there's a time in all of our lives when we can all relate to this. The song came out in my final year at university, and at the time I thought it was cool but didn't massively relate. Fast forward a couple of years and a few curve balls I didn't expect in life, and for a long time I was listening to it non-stop!

Find anything and everything that strikes a chord with you (no pun intended) and listen to all of it repeatedly as a type of antidepressant, so to speak. There's a genre, band, and/or song for every occasion. Back when I got up at 4:30 a.m. for work I would pump Frank Turner's "Brave Face" while I showered. In fact, I highly recommend Frank's oeuvre of genre-spanning folk-punk. "Four Simple Words" is another ripper for early mornings.

I dont really ever listen to this, or American Idiot. I've always heard, and known the words to them. But when I was starting out, I thought they were legendary songs and had them on loop as I did EVERYTHING. I've only listened to the entire album (Including American Idiot & Boulevard of Broken Dreams) once. Today I saw a comment on Homecoming that made me have a completely different view on the album! It was explaining each song, for example, JOS, Jesus of Suburbia is Jimmy's hometown and about how he left it. Holiday would be him running around, doing whatever. But on St. Jimmy, Jimmy becomes a new person. St. Jimmy is who he is now. She's a Rebel is basically St. Jimmy meeting Whatsername. If we skip Extraordinary Girl, we get Letterbomb. A letter Whatsername sent to Jimmy, telling him he was never the JOS or St. Jimmy. Wake Me Up When September Ends is about St. Jimmy changing back to his old self, and Billie Joe's father that died of cancer in September. Homecoming is too important to leave out, so Homecoming. This song has five parts, so they're like chapters: Jesus of Suburbia has nothing left to do. He's been on the streets. He stands alone again. So where else to go? Home.
Part 1, the Death of St. Jimmy. He's leaving the streets, he's going back, he's leaving Jimmy behind. He realizes that turning away wasn't the answer, and he's gained nothing from it except knowledge that life is no better in a different atmosphere. He hoped for too much, and got nothing in return. St. Jimmy kills himself, in a sense, in Jesus of Suburbia's mind, he's gone. Still, there's no one who cares, and nobody cares. Jimmy still is here, but he is back to being himself.
Part 2, East 12th St. It tells us that Jesus of Suburbia got a job, and is just in his own world as people move around him. He'd rather be out and around with 'the underbelly', his friends. He feels trapped. Alone, and again, must get away. "This lifelike dream ain't for me"
Part 3, Nobody Likes You.
He's still depressed about losing Whatsername, as he waits for her to return, but no luck. All of his dreams at this point are shot down as her voice still pounds in his head "NOBODY LIKES YOU, EVERYONE LEFT YOU..."
Part 4, Rock 'N Roll Girlfriend.
In the inlay, is shown as a postcard from "Tunny," who seems to be a person Jesus of Suburbia met while on the streets. Tunny explains that he's living it up where he is, and the rebel life he leads, while Jesus Of Suburbia is rotting with his dead end job, in his dead end life.
Part 5, We're Coming Home Again.
It is Jesus of Suburbia accepting things. He's coming to the realization of everything and everyone, and is just accepting it. He comes home. It's left on a confusing note. He's not sure if he's happy or sad, he's just home, living, and he just... is.

Well yeah. It is a concept album. The whole point is that it tells a cohesive story. You wouldn't know this if you only listened to the hits or didn't pay attention to the lyrics. It is in the same type of album as The Wall, Tommy, Operation Mindcrime, and Hadestown.

I started getting hooked on green day living in southeast Alabama in 2004. Every Wednesday I watched Laguna Beach and after every episode I heard a green day song from American idiot album. These songs sounded so awesome I couldn't get it out of head and grew up a country music fan. 2004 was such a great year in pop culture. I listened to Green Bay for 4 yrs and stopped for 16 years but then I heard of savior tour on morning mash up. I started going through a rigorous diet listening to green day on my bike. I went back to 2004 green day. I love listening to them especially this album. Best decision I made this year.

I practically live this song, I lived it as a kid, being neglected by my parents and having no friends because I was kinda violent, I’m 20 and I’m violent and I live alone in the dark and I walk the boulevard of broken dreams, ,my boyfriend left me and I only have my Rottweiler Colson with me now, talk about broken dreams…
I hate how long it took for me to find this song because after hearing it for the first time, i realized that this song perfectly describes me and my childhood. I grew up as the weird kid at school who was dealing with verbal and emotional abuse at home which also came with some physical as well. I felt so alone and misunderstood for all of my childhood until my mom started getting help and homeschooled me in the 11th grade. Before then, it felt like everyone wanted me to be what they wanted and didn't care about who I wanted to be or who I was inside. it got to the point where i said "fuck everyone and their issues" and became more inteovered and apathetic. When i listen to this song, i see and feel that hurting and lost child who just wanted to feel like he belonged no matter what he was like or what he liked.
