I think he is not an assistant. I think he's a supervisor. Be careful not to get along with the supervisor! Don't make him angry. Haha. Greetings from Montevideo, Uruguay
I think the supervisor is definitely fascinated by ships - he helps as much as he can, puts all the tools in one place (which is true for some reason under the table), brushes off dust on the model with his tail and hangs his long hair everywhere)))
Good to be back with you, Olha. Damned Agent Orange (Vietnam defoliant) really gets me down from time to time. Trying to start Pavel Nikitin's "Drakkar Oseberg", but have run out of workbench space from all my flintlock firearm building. Nothing for it but to build yet another workbench! Got the wood, lack the energy! At 77, still try to keep moving, not always successful. You know, I rigged a lot of sailing vessels when I was younger; watching you with shrouds and backstays brings it back to mind. Couple places I'd change the knots and bends from what you use, but they all work well. Hope today's Valentines is good for you.
Thank you very much! I perfectly understand the problem with space on the workbench, since the days when my entire shipyard fit on one desk... Drakar is also not small in size. Maybe you will find a place for a shelf where the ship can be stored, and you can build on your knees))) I often do this even now, when each model has its own table...
I'm not a model maker, wel not yet anyway, Olha, I make Ukuleles and acoustic guitars, mainly Ukuleles, because they are cheaper to build. But I just wanted to say that I have learnt so many different techniques since watching your videos. Your ability and techniques are amazing and so inspirational. Keep posting!
C'est précis, clair, net. C'est beau. La caraque bedonnante devient élégante. Il faut dire que le chat y est pour beaucoup. Merci Olha pour votre talent.
I wish some of my young sailors had been half as good as you are at marlinspike seamanship. It would have saved my chief boatswains mate a lot of grief.
I have a build coming up and I was sorting out a problem. I think you've just shown me how I am going to tackle it. Exquisite rigging. As always, learning something new. Thank you.
This is again an amazing work done Olha !! It really adds to the realism, and when you take closeups, you could be tricked by thinking it is the real thing :o Thank you for showing how to do it, this is really so helpful and will be of great use to me for sure.
Amazing hands! I saw your Thief of Orange snatch a pencil- have you gotten it back? When all your bits and bobs grow up, I'm sure they will perform just like the originals! FR PS; Tell the ToO we have him on film this time! fr
Your rigging work…. Wow. Even under close zoom in. It is just lovely. Well done. Thank you for posting your labors. I have grown in skill I appreciate that! Hope to see in person at one of the shows. I have been meaning to ask…. Do you have the plans for the rope walk you used in your tool issue?
Thank you very much! There are no such plans. I just bought gears and motors and my friend, who cut aluminum, and I just chose the right dimensions of the metal frame...
Merci! Oui, je suis un modéliste professionnel, j'ai obtenu le plus haut rang dans la modélisation de navires "Master of Sports", mais maintenant je suis un athlète à la retraite)))
When you use the paper for the spacing of the lines, how do you figure out what angle to tie off the top of the deadeyes and then start the rope ladder? Also the spacing between the lines?
The deadeyes should all be at the same distance (horizontally), only due to the different angle of inclination of the shrouds, this visual effect appears as if the deadeyes are at an angle. The ratlines must also be clearly horizontal. I found two different sources where the distance between the ratlines is indicated. One book has 14"-16" and the other has 15"-18" - so I took the average of 16" (that's about 40 cm). In 1:59 scale it's 7 mm...
Just a few days ago, I published 4 volumes of David Steel describing rope calculations on a real ships. But in the previous issue, I showed my own calculations that I adapted to my ropewalk, because the smallest diameter of the ropes that I can make is 0.22 mm...
A small question for you. I'm preparing for my next scratch building, and I would like to know if you have already made casts to cast lead in order to obtain accessories such as an anchor or cannons?
For anchors it is a little easier, but with guns you will have to spend more time. It is easiest to cut the anchors out of Plexiglas and paint them, and if you want to follow authenticity, then they should be cut out of brass or copper and blackened. But with guns it is a little more difficult. To cast them, you need to make a perfect "master model" to get a quality casting. The cheapest way is from a piece of solid wood clamped in a drill with the help of overfills. But I prefer to make it out of brass. I usually look for a friend who has a lathe)))) and then order a professional brass casting. There is quite expensive equipment and not a simple technology for home use, but the result is 10 times better than pewter casting...
@@OlhaBatchvarov Thank you for all this info, it's much appreciated ))) Normally for my scratch building I buy the metal accessories already made (( but here, I would like to try to make them, regardless of the tools needed. I have trouble splicing lines in full scale and you are doing it in miniature. Outstand job and the ship is coming right along

I notice you used glue when knotting the "rungs"...was there a similar application IRL, to keep them from slipping?
No, they were not glued with anything. They just have knots, the more you use them, the tighter they get...
