Akathisia Awareness - Suicide Prevention

  • I describe what akathisia is and what my experience is like living with it. How severe and life altering it is and how it often leads good people to suicide. I’m currently tapering a benzodiazepine after being reinstated due to a cold turkey cut off and am experiencing this severely. It was even worse during the cold turkey. The hospital wasn’t able to spot or recognize it. We need our psychiatric community to be trained on this and how to spot it, we also need research done on its exact mechanism and a long term solution on way to alleviate it so we can save lives. Akathisia can easily become deadly.

I paced for 5 1/2 months for about 19 hours a day. It eventually went away. I was able to sit for 5 minutes to rest and then the sitting became longer. I was suicidal and the doom was nearly overcoming. Everyday, all day it was absolute hell.
My psychiatrist said I did not have it. I laughed in his face.

I commented earlier but that has disappeared. I'm so sorry you're experiencing this horrible torture. Blood pressure meds caused my severe akathisia. I took Ropinirole twice a day, up to 2 mg because I was in hell and might not have survived. It was a life saver for me. I was also tapering Clonazepam too fast so I slowed that down a lot. Eventually I healed and am now tapering off Ropinirole, which is going well. I finished the benzo taper last month. Stay hopeful. Healing happens.

I have never heard of blood pressure meds causing this. Which blood pressure med were you on?

@@CreamySymphony Amlodipine and Lisinopril both caused akathisia. It is documented that CCBs can cause aka, but Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, was a surprise. IMO once the CNS was damaged, I became more sensitive to drugs. I CTd Paxil and Ambien many years ago. That probably had an effect on me.

so true!Benzos and my cold turkey from them caused mine, thankfully it left after a couple of years off them.It was so horrific i don't know how i'm still alive.I not only had akathesia but i had over 175 symptoms and i felt so brain damaged i couldn't even watch tv because my brain wouldn't remember what i seen 5 minutes ago.I felt like i had dementia, couldn't think into or remember yesterday or even think into tomorrow at all.Time literally stopped for me and didn't exist, was like being in a bad acid trip with very severe depersonalization/derealization among so much more head to toe.At 5 years i'm so much better but still have some lingering brain dp/dr symptoms left over but they are very manageable now .Stay strong it gets better with time.I had to stay away from supplements/new meds/MSG/anything with even a trace of alcohol in it and even certain foods because they made the symptoms billion times worse

You’re Jennifer. I read your story and relate to it in so many ways, I quickly reinstated on Valium and began tapering to save my life. However I’m tolerant to the medication and have a lot of adverse effects dosing. However I know compared to cold turkey akathisia it’s the cross I got to finish carrying. I do need to clean up my diet a lot. I eat whatever whenever because of how bad things can be. Small world. I’ve watched your videos and read your story. I guess anyone who experiences this learns of the others. Take care.

@@hiddengems309 i'm so sorry you're having to go through this hell too,i'm glad you're tapering,as hard as it can be at least it won't be as severe as the cold turkey can be .I sure wish we had an easy way off this horrible stuff. It's so nice to see others like yourself spreading awareness and education about akathesia and benzo damage.I did it for many years but i got so burnt out from talking about it everyday in groups and videos 24/7 for years on end.Now that the symptoms are no longer torture and easily manageable i don't have to talk about it as much and have other ways of distracting.
For years my only distraction was being in groups 24/7 encouraging others/doing videos because i couldn't watch tv/play a game or anything else to distract.i had aphasia real bad and found it hard to even read or write or talk but i forced my brain to do it in order to distract .Doing those things everyday also allowed me to see some good coming from my injury, knowing i could help others going through it
No matter how hard this gets just remember it's only temporary and it will get better i promise! This def shows us how strong we are and even though it's a horrific process ,good things do come from it in the end.We learn ways to cope without meds and after it's over, nothing in life with ever phase us or be as hard as this is.If we can get through this,we can get through anything life brings us

How long have you had Akathisia? I thought I saw on one of your videos you said you didn't have the movement problem to bad or at all. You look uncomfortable in your videos but still handling the mental terror part. I've been going through this for almost a year and it hasn't gotten any better, its getting worse and I can't understand and the doctor doesn't understand. My doctor didn't even know about the mental part of it existed until I explained it all to him. He didn't even know you could have Akathisia unless you were unable to stop moving. Sure, I can make myself stop moving and try to keep it that way for a minute or two but it gets so horrible I have to start up again. I'm sleeping between a half hour to an hour a day and that's been going on for the last year. If I lay down it's even more uncomfortable and my biggest problem is my hips and my feet. Lately though my shoulders are rocking a lot more. I'm up pacing approximately 16 to 18 hours a day and that helps a little bit but the minute I stop in place my feet start up again and won't stop shifting back and forth and then the swaying back and forth with my hips and legs. I squat down on the floor to try to make it stop and that seems to help for a minute or two but that's it. I didn't think anything could be worse than protracted benzo withdrawals, but akathisia has to be straight from hell. I could have never imagined anything existing that could be this horrible. Sometimes this gets so horrible it seems like burning alive would feel better than to go through this a second longer. The screaming and bursting out crying and constant anger and agitation. It's impossible to explain to someone that's never gone through this how horrible it is. I could have never imagined how horrible it is and I can't even find the words to try to even describe it to try to get someone to understand how horrible it is. I got way off track but if you're still replying to your comments, I basically wanted to know how long you've been going through this.😢 Has anyone found anything that helps???

Hey how are you doin? I developed the worst inner akathisia in the last phase of my horror Valium taper… can’t bear, can’t sleep… had adverse reaction to the Valium I’m unable to walk can only make it to the bathroom barely. Thought about updosing but Valium crippled me 😣😞
