So happy that people are re-discovering Jim Croce. The guy is incredible.
@@KASPA-KEY He left us too soon. 😞
Yea I just found him he’s amazing
The song is about his ex-girlfriend who's living with his (ex) friend, Ray. He was trying to connect with them to tell them (and to convince himself) that he's ok..that he's over it, when in reality he really isn't. Great song. You should give it another listen with the context in mind.
Spot on
I agree. I wrote the same response. Sometimes you need to listen twice, maybe three times. I'm 62, so I'll bet I've heard this song a thousand times.
Exactly! Some absolutely incredible songwriting! The world lost Jim Croce way too soon
Nailed it, man!
Lot of pretending to be ok in this song. :)
He passed so young and he was such a unique and special artist.
Jim Croce and his lyrics still blow me away.
he is a genre within his own! Incredibly unique guitar player incredibly detailed lyrics like by far the 70s the best ERA of singer-songwriters
Yes he left us way too soon Rip Jim🙏
What has always haunted me was the closing lyrics to the LAST song on his LAST album:
But in looking back at the faces I've been,
I would sure be the first one to say,
That I look at myself today,
Would'na done it any other way.
He definitely was not a one-hit wonder, he was the real deal. As kids, my brother and I combined our allowances and bought three of his albums. A very expensive thing to do as kids. I can tell you EVERY song that guy wrote is an amazing experience. Needless to say, reading about his plane crash in the morning paper was a shock and his death really affected us. Still does.
Lost him way to soon
Every time I listen to one of his songs I keep wondering how many great songs we never got to hear because of his short life. He's a great example of the phrase "Only the good die young."
Back in the day you could ask the operator from the phone company to help you place a call. He was probably calling from a phone booth and asking for the operator's help calling his old ex best friend Ray. But even when he wrote down the number she gave him he couldn't read it because of the tears he was shedding. In the end he decided not to place the call and told the operator to keep the dime - the cost of the phone call...
"She's living in LA, with my best old ex-friend Ray". He's trying to call his ex-girlfriend or ex-wife who left him for his best friend. Very sad song.
I wonder if you can still do that from a land line. I doubt cell phones can. Once upon a time, you dialed 0 for the operator and 00 for the international operator. Of course I assume the song is talking about a pay phone, but good luck finding one of those any more.
Jim stole his girlfriend. Jes calling to tell the. He's okay with it now. But is he? Nope.
Jim Croce was a great talent who was taken from us far too soon. You should also check out "I Got a Name" and "New York's Not My Home".
"I Got A Name" , as an introvert teenager I found it so empowering.
Then to break your heart listen to "Photographs and Memories."
Actually they did react to I got a name a month ago.
I love the way Jim Croce builds a story from verse to verse. This is in my top 3 of his songs.
Croce was an incredible songwriter, and he delivers this performance with feeling. There's also some stellar guitar playing from both Croce and Muehleisen.
Maury's accoustic runs supporting Jim's vocals are amazing...LIVE performance, no where to hide and they hit it out of the park.
Yes!! He does have the "Thing" Lex. We thought so too back then. A sad day when we lost him🎼🎶❤️🎵
Jim music is amazing great story telling
Jim had a CCR-like career.
Very brief. But, Everything he released went top 5.
His son is also a musician and is only now able to do some of his dad’s music. He had a really tragic experience after his father died. It was heartbreaking.
Saw AJ two years ago here in NY. Remarkable performer. Yes, he did a few of his dad's song.
Jim Croce was one of the best singer/songwriters to emerge in the 70's post "Tapestry" era of rock. He had a sweet soothing voice; his life and career were tragically cut short due to a plane crash.
Hits best hits include:
"Operator", " Photographs And Memories", "I've Got A Name", " I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", the standards, " Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown" and "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". His crowning achievement was "Time In A Bottle".
A great, legendary artist who is sorely missed. R.I.P.
This is my favorite song by him. It's heartbreaking but beautiful 😍 ... "there's something in my eyes, you know it happens every time I think about the love that I thought would save me ..."
TRUST ME On This MUST HEAR Classic,, Jim Croce "Photographs & Memories"
One of the most tragic losses in music. Jim and Maury had such a great sound together. So much great music in such a short time.
A masterclass in storytelling and acoustic guitar accompaniment
Jim Croce's song just hit you in the heart. I am 65 and I was about 15 when he died. I have laughed and cried a hell of a lot over the last 50 years listening to his songs.
Listen again. This time listen to the words. I can't listen to this song without tearing up.
I think that Jim C. is very relatable and his choice of songs to perform tug at your heart. a lot of us have experienced the pain of your bf/gf being taken by a best friend or sister/brother . the heartbreak of lost love and betrayal of a friend cuts very deep.
"I only wish my words could convince myself..." What a genius songwriter. This one is a classic that gets lost in translation somewhat for folks today who can't quite grasp the operator-assisted-long-distance-call days of yesteryear.
Per Songfacts Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim from 1966 until his death in 1973, told Songfacts the story of this song: "'Operator' is one of my favorite songs. I think it's a pretty interesting song in the way in which it was composed. It's probably like a lot of songs of Jim's, but it's one that I think a lot of people relate to in a whole bunch of different ways.
Jim and I had gotten married in 1966, and we had been waiting for him to go in the service. He was a National Guard, which he had joined with the hope that he would not be sent over, and he would be able to continue his education and his music career. So he signed up for the National Guard, and just as soon as we decided to get married - in August of 1966, the week before our little wedding - he got a letter that said that he would be leaving within two weeks for his National Guard duty down in South or North Carolina, so he was leaving with a very heavy heart.
My dad had been very ill and shortly after that passed away. And we had just waited... wanted to get married and have some time to be together after all those years of waiting. All of the sudden here he is the National Guard, and Jim is not very good with authority. And he's in the South, and they were not very good with making pasta. He was missing good food, he was missing me, he was missing life in general.
He's one of the few guys I think who went through basic training twice... he really couldn't follow the system. He'd always find things that were funny, like a handbook that he put together in dealing with the service with a whole bunch of quotes of how to deal with people in the Army.
But anyway, he was standing there in the rain at a payphone. And he was listening to these stories of all these guys, the 'Dear John' stories, that were standing in line waiting their turn in the rain with these green rain jackets over their heads - I can just picture it, all of them in line waiting for their 3-minute phone call. Most of them were getting on the phone and they were okay, but some of them were getting these 'Dear John' letters, or phone calls. I think that was the most important aspect of the song, because it was just so desperate. You know, 'I only have a dime' and 'You can keep the dime' because money was very scarce and very precious, and I think if you look at the words to the song there are so many aspects of our generation that are in it.
'Operator, could you help me place this call?' I'm picturing Jim out in the rain and this long line of guys where they're really trying to reach somebody. It was hard to get through, so you always had the operator do it for you."
Brad and Lex are so sweet to listen to this music. Imagine how nice it would be if we could still have songs like this today written with deep meaning, emotions, and with basic human care.
Jason Isbell. Cover Me Up, If We Were Vampires, Streetlights...
Song was inspired during Croce's military service. Seeing soldiers placing calls home, Worried about dear John letters
He has a litany of hits
My late brother-in-law grew up with Jim in Coatesville, Pa. I met him numerous times in the 70s, always a nice guy.
He's trying to call an ex he loved who ran away with his best friend and tell her he's overcome the blow. This is a lie, and he tries to convince himself that he's healed. Sometimes I'd love it if you listened to songs twice for your reaction. This is a beautiful song.
twice would be nice or dont watch it just listen, like we had to
@@gabeman6970 Old school
Listening is better than watching. It sounds better and hits you different.
Jim is a very deep well. I think that if he hadn't been taken so soon, he would have been one of the most prolific songwriters ever. Man, he could turn em out. One great song after another. Funny songs, sad songs and love songs. Anything. Give Walkin in the Alabama Rain and also Lover's Cross a listen. Both really strong. You guys are so much fun to watch.
This was when Bell Telephone Company was nationwide and there were switchboard operators who could place direct calls from person to person anywhere in the country. By 1984, "Ma Bell," as the company was often called, was deemed a monopoly by the U.S. gov't, and put out of business.
He was a legend. Amazing song writer and singer.
Best story teller/song writter of all time. He was a huge part of my childhood. Im 40 now and can't fathom how people have never heard of him.
Croce was inspired to write this song from conversations he had overheard on a payphone near the base he was stationed at, when he was in the army. Soldiers were trying to call girlfriends who sent them Dear John letters..
Beautiful song but you two need to listen again because the lyrics are super poignant and rather brilliant. This is simple story about a guy whose girlfriend has left him for his best friend. So he's lost the two closest people in his life through betrayal. He needs to talk to someone, but the very people he would normally reach out for guidance are the same ones who have caused his dispair in the first place.
What a wonderful storytelling song. The harmonies give me chills.
Something about the late 60's and 70's Jim Croce. Harry Chapin. James Taylor. Gordon Lightfoot. Bob Dylan.... All incred
Aloha guys, Loved this man so much, back in the day
He was taken away... way to soon...Mahalo for this one...a hui hou
Everytime I hear this dong it brings tears to my eyes. It happened again just now!
Jim Croce just conveys a true sense of emotion in his songs.
I can't imagine how many more great songs he still had to share.
One of our all time great storytellers
my favorite song by him but i wish you did the studio version because it sounds way better. s tier song. one of the greatest ever!
Hopefully they know their fellow Florida reactors rating system! :)
Oh I love this version.
Jim is in excellent voice here but the guitars can't make up for the missing background instruments that gives the song it's signature sound.
He’s trying to reconnect with his ex who ran off to LA with his best friend. He wants to tell them he’s okay and got over it, but he can’t see the number he wrote down through his tears, so he gives up on the call.
Mesmerizing is the word your looking for
He’s such a amazing storyteller. He’s a story teller Lex. That’s what you’re looking for. Bless you both
Jim Croce had HEART! His heart, combined with his talent and unbelievable lyrics. TAKEN MUCH too soon.
The greatest storyteller ever to do it...R.I.P Jim...My favorite song by Jim is " Lovers Cross ".
Great song!
He was so great!😍
I can't help it, I always shed a tear when I hear this song, and I LOVE this song. I was never in the military, but like a James Taylor song, it helped me out of a couple of similar situations, by making me understand that I was not alone, that someone else in the world had gone through this too and knew how I felt.
This song is da' balm....tears every time.
Great song. Croce was a real storyteller.
One of Jim's best.
He's my favorite singer-songwriter in the folk genre. He's brilliant.
Yep. That was a good description of this song and of Jim Croce. I will just add the extreme feel of simple humanity and sincerity that are shared with his songs and his voice.
Jim was a genius song writer. The way he painted a picture in your mind was epic.
To take a bad memory and turn it into a beautiful song is just magic. Lex hit it right on the nail. Jim Croce just had it and there's no one even close to sounding like his voice or his sound. Thanks for playing Croce again. " Don't mess around with Jim is a good one to listen to.
To me...this is one of the greatest acoustic songs ever written...I think it's because he sounds so sincere..
My favorite Jim Groce song. A timeless classic!
Fantastic song takes me back , his talent was so amazing! Timeless
Jim Croce is one of my all time faves!
One can choose something from each stanza of this song and relate to it. Although I love this entire song, the second stanza when he begins to cry and he ends with, "I think about the love that I thought would save me." You can dwell on that one sentence and let it flood your mind with many different memories. I had two of his albums when I started listening to him in 1972 and 1973 when I was 11 and 12 years old. His CD is still on top of my table today.
honesty, sincerity and insight
When I was a kid, I Freekin loved this guy! His songs were fun, beautiful and poignant. So talented and died so young. 'Time in a bottle' is my favorite song!
Jim Croce was the freaking man. Someone reading this was conceived with this playing in the room. In other words, THIS BABY MAKIN MUSIC.
There are no words in describing the talents of this man, who could have given us so much more if he had lived
Love these two guys. They are playing two guitars and make it sound like one. They would not be without each They both promised each other who's ever career took off they would have each other's back
T his was a huge hit I remember it be from my childhood we used to sing it on the playground it was so popular
This is such a jewel of songwriting and performance. I mean, wow...
Been so long since I've listened to this. So glad to hear it but still so sad that he's not here to be making more amazing music. Yeah, he was such a great writer, musician and vocalist
He was a singer from the past that everytime you hear It you feel you are back In time !😄
"There's something in my eye. You know it happens every time, I think about the love that I thought would save me." That lyric breaks my heart every time I hear it.
Vince Gill is another artist who had a
deep well of hits. Spin the dial and wherever the needle stops is a great song from him.
So sad that the world lost a great talent of Jim Croce at such a young age.
Thanks for this reaction of him.
My favorite artist of all time, at 42 I listen to everything from Slipknot to 311 to Volbeat and Blink 182, he still holds that special place as a songwriter.
Jim Croce was a blessing
You guys are prolific with you reaction videos. Excellent and diverse choices to react to. This is one of the very best story teller singers to have come along.
One of the most Soul Stirring artists of all time! Have always love Jim Croce`s music even way back when I was a child and he was getting alot of Radio play.
Its been 50 years since Jim's death. I was a preteen when he died and I remember it well. Watching him on video and hearing this song still brings tears to my eyes fifty years later. No one could ever replace Jim and his music. He was definitely one of a kind. RIP Jim and Maury.
One of my favourite songs of all time.
The BEST story teller hands down.......
Listen again to pick up the story. The first few words of the song explains where he's coming from. it's sad, but lovely.
Brilliant song, I remember mum listening to him when I was a kid. I heard this song some 20 years after and it brought back those memories ❤️
He could always put us in a melancholy mood in a good way and getting high. Everyone was high in the 70's. We got along better.
I grew up in the 70's, and listened to a lot of great music. I remember songs, and lyrics, but didn't know who sang them. Jim Croce is one of those guys that sang a bunch of those songs that I remember so well. Feel good songs!
The guitar playing is crazy good!
This takes me back, I know all about Jim. He was one of my mom's favorite and had many hits. It was a sad time when he (and the others on the plane) passed. He was only 30 (married with a 2 year old son) and had so much potential. We will never forget him, he was so talented and such a great story teller. 50 years later we still miss him. My mom played his music all the time. 💛 Please make sure to listen to the lyrics of his songs they are so deep and meaningful.
Croce just kept pulling these great tunes out of his quiver and shot you straight through the heart. Peace!
You can keep the dime.. One of my favorite lyrics.
Imagine what Jim would have created in the 80s and beyond. We missed out.
I love how folks playing on hand crafted instruments play hand crafted music.
Jim Croce was an amazing player and human being...Hes missed a lot! R.I.P Jim...
One of my favorite musicians of all time. He and his family never got the fortune that they deserved.
Another part of my youth.
Heartbreaking song.
Brad, you're a mensch. Lexy, you're beautiful and smart. We need more people like you in this world 🌎🌍
Great talent. Still listening to his songs. They are stories told well. Remember them from early childhood. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, etc.
I agree with you Lex. He was amazing!!
He was just sooo good!
Such a sad and beautiful song. RIP
"There's somethin' in my eyes - ya know it happens every time..." Every time I hear this song, that is.
the acoustic guitars sound so good. we don't hear them often enough. it's always electric and lotts of background. Simple but pleasant here
"Sylvia's Mother" by Dr Hook and The Medicine Show", the saddest telephone song ever.
Guarent to make you weep!
jim croce's entire discography is immaculate. he doesnt have one bad song.
