Another artist we lost way too early. It's amazing how many rising music artists have died in plane crashes. "Time In A Bottle", "Operator", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", all great songs by Mr Croce
Absolutely agree with all those and I would add "I've Got a Name". Miss Britt, you might just have found a new rabbit hole to explore. He was a MASTER storyteller.
Jim Croce (crow-chee) was a superior songwriter, storyteller and music maker in an era of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. He was taken from us way too young (plane crash) but his songs are timeless. RIP Jim.
Jim Croce was one of the greatest singers/songwriters who ever lived. His songs touched the lives of many people wth the lyrics every person could relate to in his or her life. Truly a musical genius whose music will live forever.
A marvelous troubadour and storyteller. Love "Operator," "I've Got a Name" and "New York's Not My Home" among so many others. His accompanying guitarist Maury Muehleisen always added some lovely touches along with sweet low-key background vocals on Jim's songs. He perished (at just 24) along with 30 year-old Jim in that heartbreaking plane crash.
Jim Croce (Crow-Chee), was just an amazing writer and singer. He had some of the most poignant songs, as well as some of the funniest. From "I've Got A Name" to "Roller Derby Queen", just amazing. Gone way too soon in a plane crash. RIP.
My fav by Jim Croce is either “I got a name” or “you don’t mess around with Jim”. As someone who has been called slim before I can get into the ladder.
It's a cigar. Jim unfortunately was killed in a plane crash 50 years ago. His song I Got A Name was released as scheduled the next day. He wrote in a letter to his wife while on tour that he was considering giving up music to pursue screen writing. She received the letter after he passed.
I remember hearing that - he decided to step away from the music business because of its predatory tactics on artists just before his tour ended. He was making no money and working his butt off, being away from his family and he had had enough... and before he could walk away, he died in that tragic accident. Heartbreaking and yet somehow appropriate for a man that wrote so many heart wrenchingly beautiful songs.
❤ love this song, beyond beautiful, one of my favorites 🙏 along with the song Time in a Bottle ❤️🔥 wouldn't that be absolutely awesome to have someone write a love song for/to you 😊
Time In A Bottle, Operator, and I Got A Name are other beautifully written songs. Bad Bad Leroy Brown and You Don't Mess Around With Jim are upbeat, feel good story-songs you really love.
Three month's before his plane crashed in Luisiana, Jim Croce did two performances on the Midnight Special which are available on you tube if you actually want to see him perform. No dancers, no pyrotechnics,, no laser light show, just Jim and his guitar. And that was more than enough,
Jim Croce and his acoustic guitar has such a mellow, soothing sound. My father used to play guitar and sing his songs when I was really young…. hearing this reminds me of that time. The “happy little trees” painter you’re thinking of is Bob Ross. My 16 year old son, with his crazy hair, often draws comparisons to him.
You nailed that voice, soothing. Absolutely. The kind of singer that didn't need a band. Just him and a guitar was all that was required. And a unique voice. Even when you didn't know the song back in the day, you heard that voice, you knew right away. Jim Croce.
He actually wrote the song after he and his wife had a tiff. He wrote it that night and woke her up to sing it to her. Please, dive deep into Croce. Great love songs, great character songs.
So many of his songs are inspired by people he met and places he'd been. A masterful story teller , taken from us too soon. This is a rabbit hole well worth the jump.
Jim's name is pronounced Crow-she. Jim was deeply in love with his wife Ingrid and was considering giving up his music career and new-found fame because he had to spend so much time away from her and their baby son. Jim wrote her a letter telling her all this right before he went on stage one night. Unfortunately, that would be his last show and he died in a plane crash later that night. Ironically, his wife received the letter a week after his death.
I still remember the morning we learned of Jim's death. I had heard the report on the radio. When my older brother Jim, who was a huge fan, came down for breakfast and I told him the news, you would have thought I had kicked him in the stomach. Croce was a troubadour, story teller, and amazing guy. His loss affected many people deeply.
Jim Croce - a fantastic songwriter/singer/story teller - whom we lost way too early. This was one of his most popular songs, along with the story- songs of "Bad, bad Leroy Brown", "Don't mess around with Jim". I think his his best love song is "Time in a bottle" which was the song my husband and I chose for our wedding dance back in 1983.
That’s called a cigar….Jim Croce was THE man….and was only 30 when he died…I used to think when I was younger he was at least like 45….absolute legend, REAL man, HATED Hollywood etc
he is perfect. there is nothing better. i grew up on him every family road trip. jim is my childhood. he is perfect. he is the exact opposite of how the eagles suck.
I remember where and when I was, when I learned of his death. Its hard to believe it has been 50 years (Sept 20, 1973) since Jim Croce died in a plane crash. His performing partner, Maury Muehleisen, who played guitar with him on stage also passed. A ton of wonderful music was lost when he died. I am 73 and I have missed him ever since he passed.
Jim Croce was hitting his peak in popularity and commercial success when he died in a plan3 crash the day before my birthday in 1973. I made it a point to buy his cassette tapes the next day. The fact that he died suddenly reminded us that it was another rock star extinction too soon after Jimi, Janis, and Jim. His influence was positive and uplifting. Sometimes humorous. But his early death was made.worse by the fact that he left behind his year old son. His, son, performs Jim's music today to honor his late father. YOU DONT MESS AROUND WITH JIM, RAPID ROY THE STOCK CAR BOY are my favorite songs by Jim. Bur if you want hus sensitive, personal lovesongs, then you'll want to hear, ONE LESS SET OF FOOTSTEPS, TIME IN A BOTTLE, & I GOT A NAME. Enjoy
Jim died in a plane crash the year that I was born but I grew up on his music. My older siblings LOVED him. Many years later, I moved to the college town of Natchitoches, La. While at their little airport one day, I saw a plaque with Jim's name on it. Before then, I had no idea THAT'S where he died. 💔
The Word is Layering! Hey You're Right, Hey, Jim tell him what he has won. Well Ervin. A wonderful trip down memory Lane with no Dementia! HOw AbOuT ThaT!
When the great Freddie Mercury makes a song about your song that's when you know you're great. (Bring Back That Leroy Brown). I was born in the 80's but love early music. I actually own his great hits CD. Jim was a great storyteller, musician and was very funny. Workin' At The Carwash Blues is a gem. I've Got A Name is one of my all-time fav ever songs. RIP Mr. Croce.
One of my favorites. Word I got back in the day was he and his wife had a fight. She went to bed. He went to the basement and wrote this song and went upstairs to sing it to her.
He appeared to be smoking a "cigarillo," a type of small cigar more akin to a cigarette with a brown leaf wrapper covered by brown cigarette paper. They made an impact back in the early seventies but faded out. No, it wasn't a reefer, no matter how much you might want to believe it was! And Jim Croce was a major talent, the poet laureate of love songs of his day as far as I'm concerned. The beautiful guitar music you hear is his twelve string acoustical. What an artist! Keep checking out his legendary tunes. You and your viewers will be glad you did.
Something I hadn't known about Jim Croce is that he was both a long haul truck driver, and a special education teacher! Some more songs in addition to the one's listed below: Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy), Roller Derby Queen, and Photographs and Memories.
Jim Croce recorded the ultimate "Baby Play List" song. It's called "Time In A Bottle". He recorded it before he passed, and his wife was pregnant with their son.
Maurice Muehleisen was his lead guitarist and pianist who died in the same plane crash as Jim Croce. This song is off the album they finished recording a week before his death and they never got to see its success. After the accident Jim’s wife received a letter from him saying he wanted to quit music and start writing books and screenplays. You should check out “Time In A Bottle”.
Over on Patron, I requested his song and biggest hit "Time in a Bottle" which is about his Son A.J Croce when he was a baby. Unfortunately, Jim died in a plane crash when his son was 2 in 1973.
I was a little kid when this song was new and I remember singing it to myself walking to school in grade 3. I know the year because the year it came out was the last I went to that school.
Jim Croce (CROW-chee) died way too soon (age 30) in a plane crash while on tour. He left a lot a great music, though. His son A.J. is also a musician and sings several covers in concert. Try Jim singing "Operator", "I Got a Name", "Time in a Bottle", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim".
You said he looks like and artist, but if you saw him about five years before this song, he would look like a taxi driver because that is what he was doing. Croce is a national treasure and you should dig into his catalogue.
In addition to everything else others have already mentioned, Jim Croce could also write a great break-up song ("Lover's Cross," "One Less Set of Footsteps"). Since you mentioned lullabies, he also wrote "Time in a Bottle" for/about his son, who was just barely two when Jim Croce died in a plane crash at 30.
Young lady, we definitely gonna miss you while you are fulfilling one of Gods greatest blessings, bringing a little one into the world !!! You have the time off you deserve...and I reckon we'll be here till you come back !!
It's so funny you mentioned his mustache....my Dad was a huge fan of his ..grew up in the 70 and we had all his albums...my Dad grew a mustache just like his used to have a pic of it....thanks for bringing back the memories ❤
September 20,1973, the day before the release of his fifth album "I've Got A Name" Jim and five others perished in a plane crash, he was 30 years old. The title track to that album has always been my favorite. It would be greatly appreciated if you could review "I've Got A Name" and "Time In A Bottle", from my heart to yours ❤. Anyway, loved the review, love you, take care and stay safe. ❤️ &✌️
This song and "Operator" and "Time In A Bottle" are my favorite 3 from him. Jim Croce ("crow-chee"). In Operator you have to read bwtween the lines a bit.

Time in a Bottle❤ what a classic 👍
Alabama Rain, Photographs and Memories,
I think Britt will love all of these gems.
You should check out Bad, Bad Leroy Brown next. You're going to love it.
His last name is pronounced "Crow-chee." An amazing songwriter who left us way too soon
Your right.. way to young

Don’t need the Italian pronunciation because he pronounced his name in the way that the commenter stated.
@@Paladin70 Oh, really ?.....well, in this case I have to apologize...I'll even make my inappropriate comment disappear. Thank you for the info.

Jim Croce (crow-chee) was a superior songwriter, storyteller and music maker in an era of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. He was taken from us way too young (plane crash) but his songs are timeless. RIP Jim.
For too brief of a time in the 70's, he was a hit machine. We lost a real treasure.
He has so many great songs. Definitely keep checking him out. "Operator" is a master class in story telling.
💯

Ah, Jim Croce. He was a lovely man, passed way too young. His voice is indeed soothing. So many great songs!
That just looks like a cigarillo he’s smoking.
I got a few tears flowing singing these in my car with a lady friend by my side. I wore those 8 track tapes out, found them again and bought them.
Jim Croce and his acoustic guitar has such a mellow, soothing sound. My father used to play guitar and sing his songs when I was really young…. hearing this reminds me of that time.

Lost in a plane crash also. Too many died that way too soon. John Denver, Keith Green, Buddy Holly. Sad
We lost Jim Croce 50 years ago Sept. 20, 1973 in a small plane crash, including his lead guitarist. This song came out in 1974, posthumously.
He never got to taste the fruits of his labor. He wrote so many of my favorite lyrics and songs. We lost him way too damn soon. Be well, Duke

Time in a Bottle is the best lullaby for a baby, he wrote and recorded this for his young son not long before he died.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Jim Croce is one of the best story teller songwriters ever.
In my opinion...The greatest storyteller of all times...R.I.P Jim.
Time in a bottle is a must.He was an artist, with words.
My favorite of his is “I have a name”. Both him and Harry Chapin both came out around the same time. Both died tragically in accidents.

React to "Operator" -- there is no song like it. It will blow you away.

"DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM"!!!
He was just getting big, my freshman year of high school. It was quite the shock
one of my favorite artists of all time. love Croce.
He , and others , died in a plane crash in September 1973 on my parents wedding anniversary - that's why I remember it so well
Since you like story telling, you will have great fun with Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown."
Jim was an American treasure. He wrote some great songs. Thanks for sharing, Britt! 🙂
Maury Muehleisen was his accompanist on guitar and harmonies. He was also killed in the same airplane crash.
Jim's girlfriend at the time was Patti Dahlstrom. On the day he died, she wrote 'Sending My Good Thoughts To You'. Maybe one to listen to
He was a story teller through his music.
We lost him too young at 30 yrs old! Too tragic! Gotta react to his song operator next!! Thanks

I was bound in an existential quandary that I still haven’t escaped.
Jim Croce is to me what Bob Ross was in painting genies
